What the Social Security Bonus Is and How It Works

There is no official Social Security bonus. The phrase is marketing shorthand for a handful of legitimate ways to raise your monthly check: waiting past full retirement age to claim, the automatic yearly cost-of-living adjustment, and Medicare Advantage plans that pay back part of your Part B premium. Each one works differently, and used together they can add up to thousands of dollars over a retirement.

Wait Past Full Retirement Age

The largest lever is delayed retirement credits. For every month you postpone claiming past your full retirement age, your benefit grows by two-thirds of one percent, up to age 70.1eCFR. Title 20 Chapter III Part 404 Subpart D – Old-Age and Disability Benefits That is 8% per year. If you were born in 1960 or later, your full retirement age is 67, so the maximum delay is three years and the maximum increase is a permanent 24%.2Social Security Administration. In dollar terms, the maximum monthly benefit at full retirement age in 2026 is $4,152.3Social Security Administration. 2026 Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA) Fact Sheet Wait until 70 and the ceiling rises to $5,181 per month.4Social Security Administration. What Is the Maximum Social Security Retirement Benefit Payable The increase is permanent, and every future cost-of-living adjustment compounds on the higher base.

Suspend Benefits You’ve Already Started

If you already claimed and wish you had waited, you have a second chance once you reach full retirement age. You can call SSA and ask them to pause your payments.5Social Security Administration. Pause Your Retirement Benefit During the suspension your future benefit grows by up to 8% per year plus any cost-of-living increases, exactly as if you had never claimed. Payments restart automatically at 70 or whenever you ask.

There is a real cost. Nobody on your record receives benefits while yours are paused, including a spouse who collects on your earnings history.5Social Security Administration. Pause Your Retirement Benefit If you’re enrolled in Medicare, you still have to pay premiums out of pocket during the suspension. The strategy works only if you have other income to live on in the meantime.

Claiming Early Cuts Your Check for Life

The flip side of delayed credits is the early-filing reduction, and this is where most people leave money behind. For each of the first 36 months you claim before full retirement age, your benefit drops by five-ninths of one percent. Each additional month beyond 36 shaves off another five-twelfths of one percent.6Social Security Administration. Benefit Reduction for Early Retirement

Do the math for a full retirement age of 67. Claiming at 62 is 60 months early and a 30% permanent cut.6Social Security Administration. Benefit Reduction for Early Retirement A $2,000 benefit at 67 becomes $1,400 at 62. Reaching full retirement age doesn’t reverse it. The reduction is locked in, and only annual cost-of-living increases apply to the smaller amount. Claiming at 62 feels like free money until the math catches up over a 20- or 30-year retirement.

The Annual Cost-of-Living Adjustment

Every year, Social Security benefits are adjusted for inflation. The change is based on the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers, comparing the third quarter of the current year to the third quarter of the prior year. If prices went up, benefits go up by the same percentage starting in January.7Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 42 U.S. Code 415 – Computation of Primary Insurance Amount No congressional vote is needed.

For 2026, the adjustment is 2.8%.3Social Security Administration. 2026 Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA) Fact Sheet SSA usually announces the number in October and the new amount appears in January payments. These increases compound over time, which is part of why delaying is so valuable: your delayed credits get applied to a base that keeps growing.

Medicare Advantage Part B Giveback

This is the version insurance companies most often advertise as a “Social Security bonus.” Some Medicare Advantage plans use part of their federal rebate to cover some or all of your Medicare Part B premium.8eCFR. 42 CFR Part 422 – Medicare Advantage Program Because SSA normally deducts the Part B premium straight from your Social Security check, a plan that pays that cost leaves more of your payment in your pocket.

The standard Part B premium for 2026 is $202.90 per month.9Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. 2026 Medicare Parts A and B Premiums and Deductibles Depending on the plan and where you live, a giveback can reduce your deduction by anywhere from a few dollars to the full premium amount. Your Social Security benefit itself has not gone up; SSA is just withholding less from it. This is worth understanding before signing up for a plan on the strength of a “bonus” ad.

Working While Collecting

Earning wages while collecting Social Security before full retirement age triggers the retirement earnings test. In 2026, if you are under full retirement age for the entire year, SSA withholds $1 for every $2 you earn above $24,480. In the year you reach full retirement age, the formula loosens: $1 is withheld for every $3 you earn above $65,160, counting only what you make before the month you hit full retirement age.10Social Security Administration. Receiving Benefits While Working

Here is the part most people miss. The withheld money isn’t lost. Once you reach full retirement age, SSA recalculates your benefit and credits you for the months when payments were held back, so your monthly check goes up.11Social Security Administration. How Work Affects Your Benefits After full retirement age there is no earnings test at all, and you can earn any amount without affecting your benefit.

Delayed Credits Pass to a Surviving Spouse

If you earn delayed retirement credits and later pass away, your surviving spouse or surviving divorced spouse inherits the higher amount.12Social Security Administration. Section 404.313 – What Are Delayed Retirement Credits and How Do They Increase My Old-Age Benefit Amount SSA counts every credit earned through the month before death. For a couple where one spouse earned significantly more, delaying the higher earner’s claim locks in a larger survivor check on top of the larger benefit while both are living.

Other family members collecting on your record, such as dependent children, do not share in delayed credits.12Social Security Administration. Section 404.313 – What Are Delayed Retirement Credits and How Do They Increase My Old-Age Benefit Amount The boost is only for the surviving spouse or surviving divorced spouse.

Applying, and the Retroactive Choice

You can apply through your my Social Security account, by phone, or at a local SSA field office. SSA asks for your Social Security number, an original or certified birth certificate, and W-2 forms or self-employment tax returns from the previous year.13Social Security Administration. What Documents Do You Need to Apply for Retirement Benefits Federal law requires electronic payment, so you’ll need either a bank account for direct deposit or a Direct Express debit card.14Social Security Administration. Direct Deposit

The application is Form SSA-1.15Social Security Administration. Form SSA-1-BK – Application for Retirement Insurance Benefits The most consequential field is the date you want benefits to begin, because that date decides whether you lock in delayed credits or accept an early-filing reduction. Processing usually takes about six weeks, after which SSA sends a Notice of Award letter with your monthly amount.

One catch on the retroactive side. If you apply after full retirement age, SSA can pay up to six months of retroactive benefits as a lump sum.16Social Security Administration. SSA Handbook 1513 – Retroactive Effect of Application Those retroactive months count as months you were not delaying, so they reduce the delayed credits you would otherwise earn for that period. If your plan is to maximize the monthly amount, turning down the lump sum is often the better move.
