If you’re single with one job and no dependents, what to claim on a W-4 is short: write your name, address, and Social Security number in Step 1(a) and 1(b), check “Single or Married Filing Separately” in Step 1(c), skip Steps 2 through 4, then sign and date Step 5. That’s the whole form. The 2026 W-4 uses actual dollar amounts instead of the old allowances, so the boxes you check and the numbers you enter translate directly into the federal tax that comes out of each paycheck.1Internal Revenue Service. Form W-4 2026 Employee’s Withholding Certificate The other steps exist for the situations that make a single filer’s return more complicated: a second job, a dependent, investment income, or itemized deductions. Work through each one only if it applies to you.
Which Filing Status Box to Check
Most single people check “Single or Married Filing Separately” in Step 1(c). That tells your employer to use the $16,100 standard deduction for 2026 and the single tax brackets when calculating withholding.2Internal Revenue Service. IRS Releases Tax Inflation Adjustments for Tax Year 2026
Check “Head of Household” instead if you’re unmarried and pay more than half the cost of keeping up a home for a qualifying dependent. Head of household raises your 2026 standard deduction to $24,150 and applies wider tax brackets, so less of your income is taxed at higher rates.2Internal Revenue Service. IRS Releases Tax Inflation Adjustments for Tax Year 2026 Single parents and other unmarried filers supporting a qualifying dependent almost always come out ahead using this status, so it’s worth checking whether you qualify before defaulting to single.1Internal Revenue Service. When You Need Step 2: Multiple Jobs
If you hold two or more jobs at the same time, each employer will withhold as though that job is your only source of income. Total withholding across both jobs almost always ends up too low, and you owe the difference at tax time. Step 2 is how you fix that.1Internal Revenue Service. Form W-4 2026 Employee’s Withholding Certificate
You have three ways to handle it. The IRS Tax Withholding Estimator at irs.gov/W4App is the most accurate, especially if you have three or more jobs or the pay is uneven. It produces an extra withholding amount you enter in Step 4(c) on one W-4. The Multiple Jobs Worksheet on page 3 of the form does the same calculation by hand, again with the result going in Step 4(c) on one form only. If you have exactly two jobs that pay about the same, you can instead check the Step 2(c) box on both W-4s, which splits the standard deduction and brackets evenly between them.1Internal Revenue Service. Form W-4 2026 Employee’s Withholding Certificate
The estimator and worksheet options also keep your second job private. Because they output a single dollar figure in Step 4(c), the primary employer never sees a signal that another job exists. The Step 2(c) checkbox appears on both employers’ copies.3Internal Revenue Service. FAQs on the 2020 Form W-4
Step 3 if You Support Dependents
Single doesn’t automatically mean no dependents. If you support a qualifying child under 17, enter $2,200 for each one on Step 3. Add $500 for each other qualifying dependent, such as an adult child, a child 17 or older, or an elderly parent you support. Total the amounts on line 3 and your employer spreads that credit across your paychecks all year instead of making you wait for a refund.1Internal Revenue Service. Form W-4 2026 Employee’s Withholding Certificate
The full credit is available to single filers with adjusted gross income of $200,000 or less. Above that, the child tax credit shrinks by $50 for every $1,000 of extra income, so filers close to or above $200,000 should use the online estimator rather than plug in the full amounts.1Internal Revenue Service. Form W-4 2026 Employee’s Withholding Certificate
Only claim people who actually qualify. Listing dependents you aren’t entitled to can leave you underwithheld and trigger a $500 civil penalty for false withholding information.
Step 4: Other Income, Deductions, and Extra Withholding
Step 4 is optional. Use it if your tax situation goes beyond salary and the standard deduction.
4(a): Other Income
Enter estimated yearly income from interest, dividends, retirement distributions, and similar sources that aren’t already having tax withheld. Do not include wages or self-employment income here. Your employer adds this figure to your wages when it calculates withholding, so the tax on that outside income comes out of your paycheck evenly over the year.1Internal Revenue Service. Form W-4 2026 Employee’s Withholding Certificate
For side self-employment income, the form points you to the online estimator instead, because self-employment income triggers both income tax and self-employment tax. The estimator’s result goes in Step 4(c), not 4(a).1Internal Revenue Service. Form W-4 2026 Employee’s Withholding Certificate
4(b): Deductions Above the Standard Amount
If you plan to itemize or claim certain above-the-line deductions, use the Deductions Worksheet on page 4 and put the result on line 4(b). Leaving 4(b) blank tells your employer to assume the standard deduction. Common itemized deductions that go on the worksheet include medical expenses over 7.5% of income, state and local taxes, mortgage interest, and charitable contributions.1Internal Revenue Service. Form W-4 2026 Employee’s Withholding Certificate
The 2026 worksheet also includes three deductions created by the One, Big, Beautiful Bill Act, each available through 2028 whether you itemize or not:
- Qualified tips: up to $25,000 in tips from occupations the IRS identifies as customarily tipped, phasing out for single filers with modified adjusted gross income above $150,000.4Internal Revenue Service. One, Big, Beautiful Bill Provisions – Individuals and Workers
- Qualified overtime pay: up to $12,500 in overtime premium pay (the extra portion above your regular rate), with the same $150,000 income phase-out.5Internal Revenue Service. One, Big, Beautiful Bill Act – Tax Deductions for Working Americans and Seniors
- Auto loan interest: up to $10,000 in interest on a loan for a personal-use vehicle assembled in the U.S., phasing out at $100,000 for single filers. The loan must have originated after December 31, 2024.4Internal Revenue Service. One, Big, Beautiful Bill Provisions – Individuals and Workers
Including these on the worksheet raises your take-home pay during the year instead of turning into a refund later.
4(c): Extra Withholding Per Paycheck
This line lets you request a flat extra amount withheld from every paycheck. It’s also where the online estimator’s or Multiple Jobs Worksheet’s output goes. Single filers who consistently owe at tax time often use 4(c) as a buffer.1Internal Revenue Service. Form W-4 2026 Employee’s Withholding Certificate
When You Can Claim Exempt
If you owed no federal income tax last year and expect to owe none this year, you can claim complete exemption from withholding. Check the box in the “Exempt from withholding” section between Step 4(c) and Step 5, complete Steps 1(a), 1(b), and 5, and leave the rest blank.1Internal Revenue Service. Form W-4 2026 Employee’s Withholding Certificate This mostly applies to single filers whose income sits below the standard deduction, such as students and part-time workers.
Exempt status doesn’t carry over. To keep it, you must file a new W-4 claiming exemption by February 15 of the following year. Miss the deadline and your employer switches you back to single with no adjustments.6Internal Revenue Service. Topic No. 753, Form W-4, Employees Withholding Certificate
Signing and Handing It In
Step 5 needs your signature and the date. You’re certifying under penalty of perjury that the information is accurate. Give the form to your employer’s payroll or HR department. The W-4 doesn’t go to the IRS unless the agency specifically asks for it. If you never turn one in, your employer withholds at the default single rate with no other entries, which usually pulls more tax than necessary.1Internal Revenue Service. Form W-4 2026 Employee’s Withholding Certificate
Many employers now take W-4s through an online portal, which carries the same legal weight as paper.7Internal Revenue Service. Publication 15-A, Employer’s Supplemental Tax Guide After you submit a new form, check the next couple of pay stubs to confirm the federal tax withheld matches what you expected.
When to Redo Your W-4
You can file a new W-4 as often as you want. The IRS suggests reviewing yours after any of these:8Internal Revenue Service. Tax Withholding: How to Get It Right
- Starting a new job, or losing one, since your total annual income shifts.
- Picking up a second job or freelance work, which almost always requires a Step 2 adjustment.
- Birth or adoption of a child, which adds $2,200 to Step 3.
- Buying a home, since mortgage interest and property tax may push you toward itemizing.
- Starting to receive investment or retirement income not subject to separate withholding.
- A large raise or pay cut that changes your bracket or triggers a phase-out.
The fastest way to check whether your current withholding is on track is the IRS Tax Withholding Estimator at irs.gov/W4App, which compares what’s been withheld year-to-date against your projected annual tax.9Internal Revenue Service. About Form W-4, Employee’s Withholding Certificate
What Happens if You Get It Wrong
Deliberately entering false information on your W-4, such as claiming dependents you don’t have, carries a $500 civil penalty for each false statement, on top of any tax and interest you owe.10eCFR. 26 CFR 31.6682-1 – False Information With Respect to Withholding Honest mistakes that leave you underwithheld can still trigger an underpayment penalty if you owe $1,000 or more at filing.11Internal Revenue Service. A Note on State Withholding
The federal W-4 only controls federal income tax. Most states with an income tax require their own separate withholding form rather than accepting the federal one, so expect your employer to hand you a state form as well.
