What Qualifies for an Urgent Travel Passport Appointment?

An urgent travel passport appointment is an in-person visit to a U.S. passport agency reserved for people with confirmed international travel within 14 calendar days, or within 28 calendar days if you need a foreign visa before you go.1U.S. Department of State. How to Get my U.S. Passport Fast These appointments skip the routine mail pipeline, which currently runs four to six weeks, and the expedited-by-mail track, which runs two to three weeks.2U.S. Department of State. Processing Times for U.S. Passports The agency typically hands you a finished passport the same day or the next business day.

Do You Qualify

Two things determine eligibility: the reason you need the passport and how soon you’re leaving.

For standard urgent travel, you need a confirmed international trip departing within 14 calendar days. If your destination requires a foreign visa that has to be issued before departure, the window opens to 28 calendar days. Bring a printed itinerary, airline ticket, or cruise booking with your name and departure date; the agency verifies your dates against the window before it will see you. If your trip is further out and no visa is needed, you won’t qualify for an in-person appointment, and the right route is applying by mail with expedited processing.1U.S. Department of State. A separate track exists if an immediate family member abroad has died, is dying, or has a life-threatening illness or injury. That process starts with a call to 1-877-487-2778 and requires documentation of the emergency along with your travel plans. Representatives take these calls Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Eastern Time and on weekends from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Eastern Time.3U.S. Department of State. How to Book

Passport agencies operate by appointment only. The Department of State runs roughly 26 agencies and centers, mostly in large metro areas, so factor travel time to the nearest one into your planning.4U.S. Department of State. Make an Appointment at a Passport Agency or Center Post offices and clerks of court cannot handle these appointments; they process only routine and expedited-by-mail applications.

How you book depends on whether you’ve already applied.

If You Haven’t Applied Yet

Use the Department of State’s Online Passport Appointment System at passportappointment.travel.state.gov. The system asks about your travel dates to confirm eligibility, then lets you pick a location and time slot. Confirm the appointment within 15 minutes of the hold, or you’ll have to start over. Availability moves fast, and slots at busy locations can vanish within minutes of opening.4U.S. Department of State. Make an Appointment at a Passport Agency or Center

If You Already Applied by Mail

If you sent in an application weeks ago and your travel date is now inside the 14-day window, don’t use the online system. Call 1-877-487-2778, or 1-888-874-7793 for TDD/TTY. The representative locates your pending application and arranges for it to be processed at an agency, then gives you unique confirmation information that the agency checks at check-in. Without that confirmation, they won’t see you.1U.S. Department of State. How to Get my U.S. Passport Fast

Walk-Ins and Scams

Showing up without a confirmed appointment will not get you in the door, no matter how soon your flight leaves. To cancel or reschedule, call 1-877-487-2778; appointments can’t be transferred to another person.4U.S. Department of State. Make an Appointment at a Passport Agency or Center

Booking through the Department of State is free. What to Bring

Arriving without the right paperwork is the fastest way to waste the appointment. Gather everything before you leave the house.

The Application Form

Most urgent-appointment applicants use Form DS-11. You need DS-11 if you’re applying for the first time, if your previous passport was lost or stolen, if it was issued before you turned 16, or if it was issued more than 15 years ago.6U.S. Department of State. Passport Forms Form DS-82 is only for renewals where you can submit your most recent passport, it’s undamaged, it was issued when you were 16 or older, it was issued within the last 15 years, and it has never been reported lost or stolen.7U.S. Department of State. Renew Your Passport by Mail Complete the form using the online Form Filler at travel.state.gov and print it, or fill out a PDF by hand. If you’re using DS-11, do not sign it until told to do so at the agency.

Proof of U.S. Citizenship

Bring an original. For most people born in the United States, that’s a birth certificate showing your full name, date and place of birth, and parents’ names, signed by the custodian of records and bearing the office’s seal. For those born abroad, acceptable documents include a certificate of naturalization, a certificate of citizenship, or a Consular Report of Birth Abroad.8eCFR. 22 CFR Part 51 Subpart C – Evidence of U.S. Citizenship or Nationality Photocopies won’t be accepted as primary evidence, and your original is returned to you with the new passport.

Photo Identification

Bring a valid government-issued photo ID such as a driver’s license, plus a photocopy of the front and back. If your primary photo ID is gone along with your passport, you can bring two forms of secondary identification instead, such as a Social Security card paired with a voter registration card, employee or student ID, or expired driver’s license.9U.S. Department of State. Photo Identification You can also bring someone who knows you as an identifying witness using Form DS-71, available at the agency.

Passport Photo

You need one color photo taken within the last six months, 2 x 2 inches, on a white or off-white background, sharp and unpixelated.10U.S. Department of State. U.S. Passport Photos Many pharmacies and shipping stores print passport photos, but confirm the sizing and background before you go. A rejected photo means delays you can’t afford.

Proof of Travel

Bring a printed flight itinerary, airline ticket, or cruise booking showing your name and departure date. This is what the agency uses to confirm you meet the 14-day or 28-day window.1U.S. Department of State. How to Get my U.S. Passport Fast

Fees and Payment

For adults 16 and older, a new passport book is $130, a passport card is $30, and applying for both together is $160. On top of that, urgent processing carries a $60 expedite fee. Adding 1-to-3-day return delivery, if you want the agency to mail the finished passport rather than handing it to you, costs another $22.05.11U.S. Department of State. Passport Fees You do not pay the $35 acceptance facility fee at a passport agency; that fee only applies at post offices and clerks of court.

Agencies accept credit cards (Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover), debit cards, and contactless payments like Apple Pay, Google Pay, and Samsung Pay. They do not accept checks, money orders, or cash.11U.S. Department of State. Passport Fees Bring a card.

One caution on document type: a passport card only works for land and sea crossings to Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Bermuda. If you’re flying internationally, you need a passport book.

Special Situations

Applying for a Child Under 16

Children under 16 must apply in person using Form DS-11 every time; they cannot renew.7U.S. Department of State. Renew Your Passport by Mail Both parents or legal guardians must appear with the child and give consent.12U.S. Department of State. Apply for a Child’s Passport Under 16 On short notice, this is the part that trips families up.

If one parent can’t be there, that parent signs a Statement of Consent (Form DS-3053) before a notary and includes a photocopy of the ID shown to the notary; the notarized form must be submitted within three months of signing. If one parent has sole legal custody, they can apply alone with a court order, a birth certificate listing only that parent, or a death certificate for the other. When the other parent can’t be located, use a Statement of Special Family Circumstances (Form DS-5525).12U.S. Department of State. Apply for a Child’s Passport Under 16

Applicants 16 and 17 only need to show that at least one parent is aware they’re applying. Bringing a parent who signs the DS-11 is easiest, but a signed note from a parent plus a copy of that parent’s ID also works.13U.S. Department of State. Apply for Your Passport as a 16-17 Year Old

Lost or Stolen Passport

A lost or stolen passport cannot be renewed; you apply as a new applicant using Form DS-11. On the form, provide details about where and when the passport was lost or stolen. If you leave that section blank, the Department of State may pause your application and require a separate Form DS-64, which is the last thing you want when travel is days away.14U.S. Department of State. At the Appointment

Expect an airport-style entry. You pass through security screening, so leave anything you wouldn’t bring to an airport in the car. Inside, you check in at the front desk with your confirmation and travel documentation, get a service number, and wait to be called to a processing window. An agent reviews your application, verifies your identity, collects your citizenship evidence, and takes payment. Your original citizenship documents come back to you with the new passport.

In most cases the passport is printed on-site and you pick it up the same afternoon or the next business day. If your departure is a few days out, the agency can mail it to you with 1-to-3-day delivery for $22.05.1U.S. Department of State.
