What Is the Standard Sales Tax Deduction for 2022?

There is no flat standard sales tax deduction for 2022 that applies to every filer. The IRS instead publishes Optional Sales Tax Tables that estimate your deduction from your state of residence, income, and family size, and you can add the sales tax paid on certain large purchases on top of that table amount. The deduction is only available if you itemize on Schedule A, and it counts against the $10,000 federal cap on state and local taxes. If you still need to file a 2022 return and claim a refund, the IRS has set April 15, 2026 as the last date to do so.1Internal Revenue Service. How to Find Your 2022 Deduction Amount

You have three ways to arrive at a number. The simplest is the IRS Sales Tax Deduction Calculator. You enter your filing status, income, number of dependents, ZIP code, and any large purchases, and it produces your deduction figure.2Internal Revenue Service. Use the Sales Tax Deduction Calculator

The second option is to use the Optional Sales Tax Tables themselves. The tables approximate what households like yours typically pay in sales tax based on average spending patterns for your income level and family size in your state, with your local rate factored in.3Internal Revenue Service. The third option is to add up actual sales tax from your own receipts.2Internal Revenue Service. Use the Sales Tax Deduction Calculator This produces a larger deduction only if you spent unusually heavily on taxable goods for your income. Most filers use the table or calculator because it does not require keeping every grocery and pharmacy receipt for the year.

Whichever method you use, you make the election on line 5a of Schedule A by checking the box that indicates you are claiming sales taxes rather than income taxes.4Internal Revenue Service. 2022 Schedule A (Form 1040) You cannot claim both. Adding Sales Tax From Big Purchases

The table figure covers everyday spending. You can then add the sales tax you actually paid on certain large items: motor vehicles (cars, motorcycles, motor homes, leased vehicles), boats, aircraft, and homes, including prefabricated and mobile homes. Building materials for a substantial home renovation or new construction also qualify, provided the tax rate on those items matched your state’s general sales tax rate.5Internal Revenue Service. Taxpayers Can Claim General Sales Taxes Instead of Income Taxes as Itemized Deduction

This is where the deduction often becomes worth claiming. A single vehicle purchase with $2,500 in sales tax layered onto a $3,200 table amount puts you at $5,700 on line 5a before you add any property tax or mortgage interest. Keep the bill of sale or closing statement showing the tax amount in case the IRS ever asks how you got to that number.

Should You Bother Claiming It?

The sales tax deduction only helps if your total itemized deductions beat the standard deduction. For 2022, the standard deduction was $12,950 for single filers, $25,900 for married couples filing jointly, and $19,400 for heads of household. Your sales tax figure, plus property tax, mortgage interest, and charitable gifts, has to clear that threshold before itemizing produces any tax savings.

The choice between deducting sales tax and deducting state and local income tax usually decides itself by geography. If you lived in Florida, Texas, Nevada, Washington, Wyoming, South Dakota, Tennessee, Alaska, or New Hampshire in 2022, your state did not tax your wages, so sales tax is the only side of that election that produces a deduction. In a state that does levy income tax, sales tax generally only wins in a year with a large taxable purchase.

Remember that a deduction reduces taxable income, not tax owed. A $2,000 sales tax deduction is worth $440 to a filer in the 22% bracket. It cannot generate a refund larger than what you already paid in.

The $10,000 SALT Cap

Under 26 U.S.C. ยง164, the total deduction for state and local taxes on your 2022 return was capped at $10,000, or $5,000 if you filed as married filing separately.6Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 164 – Taxes The cap applies to everything on line 5 of Schedule A combined: sales tax (or income tax), real estate taxes, and personal property taxes.

If your property taxes came in at $8,000, only $2,000 of cap space remains for sales tax no matter how much you actually paid. Amounts above $10,000 are lost. They do not carry forward and cannot be used elsewhere on the return. In high-property-tax areas where real estate taxes alone hit or exceeded $10,000, adding a sales tax figure changed nothing.

Filing a 2022 Return Now

A 2022 return claiming a refund must be filed by April 15, 2026. After that date the refund becomes property of the U.S. Treasury, and the IRS has no authority to release it regardless of the reason for filing late.7Internal Revenue Service. Time You Can Claim a Credit or Refund The IRS estimates that more than a billion dollars in 2022 refunds remains unclaimed.1Internal Revenue Service. There is no late-filing penalty if you are owed money. If you owe tax on the 2022 return, the failure-to-file penalty runs 5% of the unpaid tax per month up to 25%, and interest accrues daily. First-time filers with a clean penalty history may qualify for relief under the IRS First Time Abate policy.8Internal Revenue Service.
