The SSS Workers’ Investment and Savings Program, now branded as the Mandatory MySSS Pension Booster, is a provident savings fund created by Republic Act No. 11199 that automatically diverts part of a qualifying member’s SSS contributions into a personal investment account, separate from the regular defined-benefit pension. When you eventually claim retirement, disability, or death benefits, the accumulated balance plus investment earnings is paid out tax-free on top of your regular SSS benefit.1Social Security System. Who Is Automatically Enrolled
The mandatory program applies to employed SSS members whose Monthly Salary Credit (MSC) is above ₱20,000. If your employer reports your salary at or above that threshold, you are enrolled automatically. No application, no forms. The SSS uses payroll data submitted each contribution cycle to identify who qualifies.1Social Security System. FAQs on MySSS Pension Booster
Self-employed members, voluntary contributors, and Overseas Filipino Workers are not covered by the mandatory WISP, even if their declared income is well above ₱20,000. Those groups have a separate route through the Voluntary MySSS Pension Booster, described further down.2Social Security System. MySSS Pension Booster
How Much of Your Contribution Goes Into WISP
From 2025 onward, the total SSS contribution rate is 15% of your MSC, with the employer paying 10% and the employee paying 5%. The maximum MSC is ₱35,000.3Social Security System. 2025 SSS Contribution Table
Contributions on the first ₱20,000 of MSC go to the regular SSS pension. Contributions on the portion above ₱20,000, up to the ₱35,000 cap, flow into your WISP account. So the split follows your salary bracket automatically.
A worked example makes it concrete. If you earn at or above the maximum MSC of ₱35,000, then ₱15,000 of salary credit is subject to the WISP allocation. At 15%, that puts up to ₱2,250 per month into your WISP account: ₱1,500 from your employer and ₱750 deducted from your payroll. If your MSC sits between ₱20,000 and ₱35,000, the WISP portion scales down proportionally to the excess above ₱20,000.
How the Fund Is Invested
The Social Security Commission manages the fund with a conservative, capital-preservation approach. A large share of the portfolio goes into government securities like treasury bills and bonds, which produce relatively stable returns without exposing member savings to sharp market swings.
Earnings are credited to individual accounts once a year, based on the fund’s actual performance. The most recently reported dividend was 5.33% for the mandatory WISP and 6.87% for the voluntary component (then called WISP Plus). SSS has projected a 7.2% annual return for the relaunched Pension Booster going forward, though actual results depend on yearly investment performance and the projection is not guaranteed.4Social Security System. 2024 Annual Report
When You Get the Money
The mandatory WISP balance is released when you file a final benefit claim with the SSS. Three events trigger a payout:
- Retirement. You can file for optional retirement at age 60 if you have separated from employment or stopped working as self-employed or an OFW. At age 65, the benefit is available whether or not you are still working.5Social Security System. SSS Retirement Benefit
- Total disability. If you develop a permanent incapacity that meets the SSS medical criteria, your WISP balance is paid alongside your disability benefit.
- Death. Your legal heirs or designated beneficiaries receive the full accumulated value of the account.
The payout can take the form of a pension, a lump sum, or a combination, depending on the structure of your underlying claim. However it is disbursed, the total accumulated value including all investment income is tax-free under Philippine law.1Social Security System. FAQs on MySSS Pension Booster
You do not need to file a separate application for the WISP portion. When you claim retirement, disability, or death benefits through the SSS, the system automatically evaluates and processes your Pension Booster balance for simultaneous release. How to Check Your Balance
You do not have to wait until retirement to see what is in your account. WISP contributions and accumulated savings can be tracked through your My.SSS online portal.6Social Security System. Workers’ Investment and Savings Program (WISP) Doing this regularly is worthwhile, mostly to confirm that your employer is remitting the correct amounts. Catching a discrepancy early is far easier than trying to reconstruct one years later at claim time.
If your payslip shows SSS deductions but your online account does not reflect them, that is a red flag. Since WISP contributions are deducted from payroll alongside regular SSS contributions, your employer is legally responsible for remitting them on time. Under RA 11199, a delinquent employer owes a penalty of 2% per month on the unpaid amount, compounding from the due date. Criminal exposure includes a fine of ₱5,000 to ₱20,000 and imprisonment of six years and one day to twelve years. If the employer deducted the employee’s share but failed to remit it within 30 days, the law presumes misappropriation, opening the door to estafa penalties under the Revised Penal Code.7LawPhil. If You’re Self-Employed, Voluntary, or an OFW
Because the mandatory WISP is tied to employer-reported payroll above ₱20,000 MSC, workers outside that setup are excluded from it. The Voluntary MySSS Pension Booster (formerly WISP Plus) fills that gap. It is open to any SSS member with at least one posted contribution who has not yet filed a final benefit claim, regardless of MSC.2Social Security System. MySSS Pension Booster
