A charge labeled “Security National Insurance” on your bank statement is almost always a legitimate insurance premium payment to one of three real companies that share variations of that name: Security National Insurance Company in Canada (a TD Insurance subsidiary), Security National Insurance Company in Florida (part of the Bristol West and Farmers Insurance group), or Security National Life Insurance Company in Utah. Which one is billing you depends on where you live and what kind of policy you hold.1SEC. TD Bank Principal Subsidiaries2Florida Office of Insurance Regulation. Which Of The Three Companies It Is
TD Insurance (Canada)
If you live in Canada and hold a TD-branded home or auto policy, the charge is your premium. Security National Insurance Company is a wholly owned subsidiary of The Toronto-Dominion Bank and is the underwriter TD Insurance uses for home and auto programs, including those sold to professional and alumni groups.1SEC. TD Bank Principal Subsidiaries You can confirm the charge through the TD Insurance MyInsurance portal or mobile app, or by calling 1-866-361-2311.4TD Insurance. Legal Information
Bristol West and Farmers Insurance (United States)
In the U.S., Security National Insurance Company is a Florida-domiciled auto insurer based in Davie, Florida. It is 100% owned by Bristol West Holdings, which is owned by Farmers Insurance Exchange and affiliated entities, and Farmers handles its billing and collections.2Florida Office of Insurance Regulation. Security National Insurance Company Financial Examination Report If you bought auto insurance through a Bristol West or Farmers-affiliated agent, that is where the charge is coming from. The Foremost Specialty Lines Billing Department, which handles billing for Bristol West affiliates, can be reached at 1-800-532-4221.5Foremost Insurance Group. ACH Agreement
Security National Life Insurance Company (Utah)
Security National Life Insurance Company is a separate Salt Lake City-based subsidiary of Security National Financial Corporation. It sells life insurance and preneed funeral plans, and it bills credit cards only after you sign an authorization form listing your policy number, payment frequency, and amount. Their customer line is 1-800-574-7117.6Security National Life Insurance Company. Credit Card Authorization Form
How To Confirm It Before Calling It Fraud
Before disputing the charge, do a quick match against your own records. Compare the dollar amount and the date to any insurance policy you already hold. A consistent, recurring amount that lines up with a known premium is almost always your own policy.
Search your email, including spam, for messages referencing Security National, Bristol West, TD Insurance, or Farmers. Policy documents, payment confirmations, and renewal notices usually come from one of those names. Ask any authorized user on the account whether they bought a policy; a spouse’s or adult child’s coverage is a common source of unrecognized charges.
Your bank can also pull the merchant’s full legal name, address, and industry code from the transaction record, which will tell you quickly whether the charge is from the Florida auto insurer, the Canadian TD subsidiary, or the Utah life insurer. If the billing descriptor includes a phone number, that is usually the fastest route to a clear answer.
If You Want To Cancel The Policy
If the charge is yours but you no longer want the coverage, you have to cancel the policy with the insurer directly; stopping payment at the bank does not end the policy. For Bristol West and Farmers-affiliated policies, automatic payments stop once the cancellation is processed, though a withdrawal already in motion around the time of your request may still clear.5Foremost Insurance Group. If The Charge Is Truly Unauthorized
If you have no policy with any Security National entity and no one on your account signed up for one, the law gives you specific protections, and they differ depending on whether the charge hit a debit card or bank account or a credit card.
Debit Card Or Bank Account
Electronic debits are covered by the Electronic Fund Transfer Act and Regulation E. Report an unauthorized charge within 60 days of the date your bank sends the statement showing it, and you are protected from liability for the charge.7Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Regulation E Section 1005.11 If your debit card or PIN was lost or stolen, reporting within two business days caps your liability at $50; after two business days it can rise to $500.8FDIC. Unauthorized Charges on a Debit Card
Once you notify the bank, it generally has 10 business days to investigate. If it needs more time, it must issue a provisional credit for the disputed amount (minus up to $50) while it keeps looking, with final resolution within 45 days in most cases or 90 days for certain transactions.9Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. How Do I Get My Money Back After an Unauthorized Transaction
For a recurring debit you originally authorized but now want to stop, Regulation E gives you a right to place a stop-payment order with your bank, and the bank is liable if it fails to honor a proper request.10FDIC. Regulation E Compliance Examination Procedures Also tell the insurer to cancel the authorization on its end.
Credit Card
Credit card disputes fall under the Truth in Lending Act and the Fair Credit Billing Act. Your liability for an unauthorized credit card charge is capped at $50, provided you report it within 60 days of the statement date. The card issuer must conduct a reasonable investigation and give you results within two complete billing cycles or 90 days, whichever is shorter.11Office of the Comptroller of the Currency. Filing A Complaint If The Insurer Won’t Resolve It
If you are convinced the charge is unauthorized and the insurer is not responding, your state’s department of insurance regulates the company and takes complaints. The National Association of Insurance Commissioners maintains a directory of state departments and a Consumer Insurance Search tool for checking an insurer’s license status and complaint history. The NAIC’s Online Fraud Reporting System routes fraud reports to the right state regulator.12NAIC. Consumer Resources
States run their own processes as well. The Texas Department of Insurance takes complaints at 800-252-3439.13Texas Department of Insurance.
