What Is the OneSourceMA Charge on Your Statement?

A “OneSourceMA” line on your bank statement is an electronic payment moving between your account and a Massachusetts state agency. It most often reflects a child support withdrawal, a Department of Revenue tax payment, a professional licensing fee, or a repayment of unemployment benefits. The label looks generic because it is: the ACH network that carries the transaction only allows 16 characters for the originator’s name, so every Massachusetts agency using the same processing arrangement shows up under one truncated tag.1ACH Guide for Developers. Why the Label Doesn’t Name the Agency

The ACH company entry description field, which could in theory identify what the payment is for, only allows 10 characters.2Nacha. Risk Management Topics – Company Entry Descriptions That’s why your statement tells you Massachusetts took or sent money without telling you why. Different banks format the descriptor differently, so you may see “ONESOURCEMA,” “OneSourceMA,” or a version with spaces. The same label can appear for a child support deduction one month and a licensing fee the next, since multiple agencies route payments through the same system.

The Four Most Likely Sources

Child Support

The most common source of a recurring OneSourceMA charge is the Child Support Services Division (CSS) within the Department of Revenue. Under Chapter 119A, CSS is the state’s sole agency for establishing, modifying, and enforcing child support orders,3General Court of Massachusetts. Massachusetts General Laws Chapter 119A – Child Support Enforcement and state regulations require it to collect electronically wherever feasible.4Massachusetts Department of Revenue. 830 CMR 119A.5.1 – Child Support Enforcement Electronic Funds Transfer Program If you have a court-ordered obligation, this is the first thing to check.

State Tax Payments

If you owe Massachusetts income tax and set up a payment plan or authorized a one-time electronic payment, the withdrawal will typically appear as OneSourceMA. The state charges 8% annually on underpayments as of early 2026, along with penalties,5Massachusetts Department of Revenue. Massachusetts Penalties and Interest Assessed by DOR so the amount withdrawn each month may be slightly higher than your original balance suggested.

Professional Licensing Fees

Payments to the Division of Occupational Licensure for applications and renewals generate the same descriptor. Fee amounts vary by profession and by whether vendor processing fees apply.6Mass.gov. Fees and License Renewal Schedules for Allied Health Professionals If you recently applied for or renewed a license, compare the charge to what you were quoted at checkout.

Unemployment Overpayment Repayments

If the Department of Unemployment Assistance determined you were overpaid benefits, any repayment you made through your Unemployment Services for Workers account can also carry this label.7Mass.gov. Repay Unemployment Benefit Debt If you believe the overpayment determination itself was wrong, you can request a waiver, but the state won’t refund payments made before the waiver is granted.8Mass.gov. A Small Surcharge Explains Odd Amounts

Electronic payments to state agencies carry processing fees that are bundled into the total, not shown separately. For the Division of Occupational Licensure, credit cards run 2.39% of the transaction, debit cards 2.09%, and an ACH bank transfer costs $0.35.9Mass.gov. Fees and License Renewal Schedules for Allied Health Professionals and the state will re-attempt the original charge, which can produce two OneSourceMA entries close together.

How to Match the Charge to an Account

Before you call anyone, pull three things from your bank record: the exact date, the amount to the penny, and the full descriptor line (there may be a reference or trace number after “OneSourceMA”). Then check the portal for whichever agency seems most likely.

Also look through recent mail and email from state agencies. Notices and billing statements carry reference numbers that link directly to the transaction in agency records. Your Social Security number is the primary identifier for most Massachusetts state accounts,13Massachusetts Department of Revenue. AP 601 – Assistance, Service, Obtaining Information so keep it handy before you call.

If the Amount Is Wrong

Once the charge matches a known obligation, no further action is needed. If the amount is wrong or you can’t find any obligation it fits, contact the agency you believe initiated it. MassTaxConnect has a secure message feature after you log in.14Mass.gov. About MassTaxConnect CSS staff can pull up your account by phone at (800) 332-2733. Have the transaction date and amount, any confirmation number, and your Social Security number ready.

If the agency agrees the charge was an error, refunds take time. The Department of Revenue estimates four to six weeks for e-filed returns with direct deposit and eight to ten weeks for paper.15Mass.gov. Your Personal Income Tax Refund Other agencies set their own timelines, so ask for one when you open the request.

If You Never Authorized the Payment

If you never set up any payment, never owed the underlying debt, and suspect someone used your account information, that’s a different situation. The Electronic Fund Transfer Act puts obligations on your bank regardless of which agency the money went to, and the clock starts running quickly.

Your maximum liability for unauthorized electronic transfers depends on how fast you report them:16Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. 1005.6 Liability of Consumer for Unauthorized Transfers

  • Within 2 business days of learning about the problem: $50.
  • After 2 business days but within 60 days of your statement: $500.
  • After 60 days from the statement date: potentially the full amount of any unauthorized transfers occurring after the window closes.

Once notified, the bank must investigate and report its findings within 10 business days, or provisionally credit your account within those 10 days while investigating for up to 45 days.17Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1693f – Error Resolution You have full access to any provisional credit during the investigation. If the bank concludes no error occurred, it must explain its findings in writing within three business days.

For a billing dispute, the agency is the right place to start. For a genuinely unauthorized transaction, file with the bank first and then notify the agency. The 60-day clock runs from when your statement is sent, not when you notice the charge.

What Happens If You Ignore a Real State Debt

Ignoring a legitimate OneSourceMA obligation carries escalating consequences. For child support arrears, Massachusetts can notify any licensing authority in the state to suspend or block renewal of your licenses. The statute defines “license” broadly enough to cover driver’s licenses, professional certifications, business permits, trade licenses, and recreational permits. You get 30 days’ written notice and can request a hearing, but if you don’t respond, the suspension happens automatically.18General Court of Massachusetts. Massachusetts General Laws Chapter 119A Section 16

For tax debts, interest compounds on both the unpaid tax and accrued penalties.19Massachusetts Department of Revenue. 830 CMR 62C.33.1 – Interest, Penalties, and Application of Payments At 8% annually on underpayments, a balance grows noticeably over just a few months of inaction.

Federal payments are also on the table. The Treasury Offset Program lets the government intercept federal payments, including your IRS refund, to satisfy state debts that have been referred for collection.20Bureau of the Fiscal Service. Treasury Offset Program Once a Massachusetts debt reaches that stage, your federal refund can be reduced or eliminated without further warning. Setting up a payment plan early, even a small one, keeps the account from advancing through those stages.
