What Is the Keystone SD Charge on Your Statement?

A charge labeled “Keystone SD” on your credit card almost always comes from a business in or near Keystone, South Dakota, the small tourist town at the entrance to Mount Rushmore National Memorial. Dozens of hotels, restaurants, gift shops, and attractions operate there, and many of them bill under a corporate or processor name that looks nothing like the sign out front. If you or anyone on your account visited the Black Hills recently, that trip is the first place to look.

Why the Descriptor Doesn’t Match the Storefront

Card statements identify purchases through merchant descriptors, short text strings of roughly 20 to 30 characters that combine a business name with a city, state, phone number, or website. The name that lands on your statement is not always the name on the door. A shop may bill under its parent company’s legal name, under a corporate entity that owns several brands, or under an outdated “doing business as” name that was never updated with the payment processor.1Chargeback Gurus. Merchant Descriptor Payment processors sometimes insert their own name into a pending charge before the transaction settles, which adds another layer of confusion.

How to Trace the Charge to a Specific Merchant

Start with the descriptor itself. Open the transaction in your bank’s app or website rather than relying on the paper statement. Many issuers show a phone number, URL, or extended business name in the transaction detail that the printed line leaves out. Call the number or visit the site and it should identify the business immediately.

If the descriptor gives you nothing to work with, paste the exact text into a search engine. Free lookup tools such as Ramp’s Charge Finder and WhatsThatCharge.com maintain databases of cryptic billing names and can often match them to a known business.7Lifehacker. How to Look Up an Unauthorized Charge on Your Credit Card Match the date and amount against email receipts, hotel confirmations, ticket stubs, or photos from a Black Hills trip. If the card has authorized users or is a joint account, ask them. A spouse’s souvenir purchase or a teen’s meal at Big Thunder Bar & Grill is a common answer.

One Charge That Isn’t About South Dakota

If you live in Pennsylvania or have a tax obligation there, a “Keystone” charge may be something else entirely. Keystone Collections Group is a Pennsylvania-based tax collector that administers local earned income taxes, per capita taxes, and other municipal obligations for school districts and municipalities across the state.8Keystone Collections Group. Keystone Collections Group Its charges route through keystonecollects.com and related subdomains, and the descriptor tends to reference Pennsylvania rather than South Dakota. Checking the URL and location on the transaction usually distinguishes the two.

What to Do If You Still Can’t Identify It

Call the number on the back of your card. Bank representatives can usually pull additional merchant details, including the full business name, location, and sometimes a merchant phone number that never made it onto your statement. That single call resolves most mystery charges.

If the charge is genuinely not yours, federal law gives you specific protections, and the rules differ depending on the type of card.

Credit Card Disputes

The Fair Credit Billing Act caps your liability for unauthorized credit card charges at $50.9FTC. Using Credit Cards and Disputing Charges To preserve your full rights, send a written dispute to your issuer’s billing inquiry address (not the payment address) within 60 days of the date the first statement containing the error was mailed. Include your name, account number, and a description of the charge, along with copies of any supporting documents. Certified mail with a return receipt is the safest route.10CFPB. How Do I Dispute a Charge on My Credit Card Bill

The issuer must acknowledge your complaint in writing within 30 days and resolve it within 90 days, or two billing cycles, whichever is shorter. While the investigation is open, you can withhold payment on the disputed amount and related finance charges, and the issuer cannot report the amount as delinquent or send it to collections.11FTC. Debit Card Disputes

Debit card timing is tighter. If the card or PIN was lost or stolen, you must notify your bank within two business days to keep your liability at $50. Waiting longer can raise it to $500. For an unauthorized charge that appears on a statement without a lost card, you have 60 days from the statement date to report it; missing that window can leave you responsible for everything that ran through the account after it closed.12CFPB.
