What Is the JOC Group Inc Charge on Your Card?

A charge from JOC Group Inc on your card is almost always a Journal of Commerce subscription, a PIERS trade-data plan, or a conference registration billed through S&P Global, which owns the Journal of Commerce. In most cases it’s an annual subscription that auto-renewed. Match the dollar amount to the products below and you can usually identify the source without calling anyone.

What JOC Group Inc Is

JOC Group Inc is the corporate billing name for the Journal of Commerce, a trade publication covering global shipping, logistics, and supply chain news. IHS Markit acquired JOC Group in 2014, and the Journal of Commerce became part of S&P Global when the S&P Global–IHS Markit merger closed in February 2022.1S&P Global. S&P Global and IHS Markit Complete Merger That is why the descriptor on your statement reads “JOC Group Inc” rather than “S&P Global” or “Journal of Commerce.”

Match the Dollar Amount to a Product

The amount on your statement is the fastest clue to what you’re paying for.

Journal of Commerce Subscription

The most common source is a joc.com subscription. Current annual pricing:2Journal of Commerce. Subscribe Today

  • Silver: $395 per year, basic digital access with limited use of the JOC Gateway data portal.
  • Silver Plus: $595 per year, adds the print magazine.
  • Gold: $1,495 per year, full Gateway access and premium data tools.

All three plans bill annually and auto-renew until cancelled. If the charge matches one of these figures and posted around the same date it did a year ago, a subscription renewal is the likely answer.

PIERS Trade Data

PIERS is S&P Global’s import-export database, built on more than 40 years of U.S. waterborne trade records and used by manufacturers, freight forwarders, and shipping lines.3S&P Global. Bill of Lading Database, Import Export Data: PIERS Its pricing is tiered and can run well into the thousands. A JOC Group charge in that range often points here.

TPM Conference Registration

The Journal of Commerce runs the annual TPM (Trans-Pacific Maritime) conference for the container shipping industry.4Journal of Commerce. TPM26 – The Premier Conference for International Container Shipping Registration fees for TPM and similar JOC-hosted events can appear under the same billing descriptor. These are one-time charges, so they usually trace back to a single date and person.

Why It Renewed Without a Warning

JOC subscriptions renew automatically for another full term unless you send written notice at least 24 hours before the current term ends.5Journal of Commerce. Subscription Terms and Conditions That is an unusually tight window, and if the anniversary slips past, you are locked into another year.

Fees are non-refundable under the same terms. You generally cannot cancel mid-term and get a prorated credit. The only stated exception is a material breach by one party that isn’t cured within 30 days of written notice.5Journal of Commerce. Subscription Terms and Conditions

Investigate Before You Call

Pull a few details together first. They’ll shorten every conversation that follows.

  • The transaction date and exact dollar amount from your statement.
  • The transaction reference or authorization number.
  • Any work or personal email addresses that might have been used to register at joc.com. Search those inboxes for messages from joc.com or spglobal.com; the original confirmation is usually still there.
  • A subscription or customer ID from your JOC or S&P Global account settings, if you can log in.

If the amount matches a subscription tier and lands near the same date each year, you have your answer without needing to contact anyone.

Cancelling or Asking for a Refund

To cancel going forward or ask about a refund, contact S&P Global’s customer support. Their contact pages list phone numbers and inquiry forms organized by product line.6S&P Global. Contact Us Include the transaction date, the dollar amount, and any account identifiers you found.

Set your expectations on refunds. The subscription terms say fees are non-refundable, so a mid-term cancellation won’t automatically produce a credit. If the renewal just posted and you never received a renewal notice, you may have some leverage, but the contract only obligates you to give 24 hours of advance notice, not the company to remind you. Save every email, chat transcript, and confirmation number.

Disputing the Charge With Your Bank

If the charge is genuinely unauthorized or you believe it’s a billing error, your rights depend on the type of card.

Credit Cards

Under the Truth in Lending Act, your maximum liability for unauthorized credit card charges is $50, and you owe nothing for charges made after you report the card compromised.7Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1643 – Liability of Holder of Credit Card Most major issuers waive that $50 through their own zero-liability policies.

For billing errors, the Fair Credit Billing Act gives you 60 days from the date the statement was sent to submit a written dispute. The issuer must acknowledge it within 30 days and resolve the investigation within two billing cycles, no more than 90 days, and cannot try to collect the disputed amount or report it delinquent while the investigation is open.8Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1666 – Correction of Billing Errors Send that written notice to the billing inquiries address on your statement, not the payment address.9Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. 12 CFR 1026.13 – Billing Error Resolution

Debit Cards

Debit card protections under the Electronic Fund Transfer Act are tighter. Report an unauthorized transfer within two business days of learning about it and your liability caps at $50. Wait longer than two days but report within 60 days of the statement, and it can climb to $500. After 60 days, you could be liable for the full amount of any further transfers the bank shows earlier notice would have prevented.10Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. 12 CFR 1005.6 – Liability of Consumer for Unauthorized Transfers Oral or written notice to the bank is enough to start the investigation process.11Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. 12 CFR 1005.11 – Procedures for Resolving Errors If a debit card charge is genuinely unauthorized, call the bank the day you spot it.

When to Skip S&P Global and Go Straight to the Bank

Call your card issuer first if any of these apply:

  • No one in your household or company has ever subscribed to the Journal of Commerce or PIERS, or registered for a JOC conference.
  • The amount doesn’t match any of the subscription tiers or a plausible event fee.
  • You see multiple JOC Group charges close together with no matching account activity.
  • You already contacted S&P Global and nothing has moved.

Preventing the Next Surprise Renewal

If the charge turns out to be a subscription you no longer want, cancelling means sending written notice well before the renewal date. The terms only require 24 hours, but waiting until the last day is exactly how people end up paying for another year. Put a reminder on your calendar at least 30 days before the anniversary of the original signup, confirm the cancellation in writing, and keep the confirmation. If your company pays JOC through a shared corporate card, track the renewal date centrally rather than relying on whoever first signed up to remember.
