What Is the IRS E-File PIN and How Does It Work?

The IRS e-file PIN is a five-digit number you choose yourself at the end of the e-filing process to serve as your electronic signature on Form 1040. There is no separate PIN to look up or retrieve from the IRS; the standalone online PIN tool was discontinued in 2016 after a series of cyber attacks. To actually transmit the return, your tax software also asks you to prove your identity, and that step uses either your prior-year adjusted gross income (AGI) or the self-select PIN you used on last year’s return.

Signature vs. Identity Verification

Two things happen in the last few screens before your return transmits. First, the software verifies your identity by asking for a piece of information only you should know: the AGI from your most recent return, or the self-select PIN you chose a year ago. Second, it asks you to pick a brand-new five-digit PIN to sign this year’s return.1Internal Revenue Service. Validating Your Electronically Filed Tax Return

Any five digits work for the signature PIN except all zeros.2Internal Revenue Service. Self-Select PIN Method for Forms 1040 and 4868 Modernized e-File (MeF) It carries the same legal weight as a pen-and-ink signature on a paper return. Save it somewhere you can find it next April, because it’s one of the two credentials the IRS will accept to verify your identity when you file again.

Finding Your Prior-Year AGI

The identity side is where most people get stuck. If the AGI you enter doesn’t match what the IRS has on file, the return bounces back immediately. Three places to find it:

  • Your prior-year tax return. AGI appears on Line 11 of the 2024 Form 1040. Line numbers can shift when the IRS redesigns the form, so look for the line labeled “Adjusted gross income” on whatever return you actually filed.3Internal Revenue Service. Adjusted Gross Income
  • Your IRS online account. Sign in at irs.gov and open your tax records; the AGI is visible there.4Internal Revenue Service. Get Your Tax Records and Transcripts
  • A tax return transcript. Request one through your IRS online account or by calling 800-908-9946. Mailed paper transcripts take 5 to 10 calendar days, so don’t wait until the last week of the season.4Internal Revenue Service. Get Your Tax Records and Transcripts

Use the AGI from your original return, not from a Form 1040-X amendment. The IRS validates against the originally filed or last-accepted return.5Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Form 1040-X

First-Time Filers and Returns Still Being Processed

If you’ve never filed a federal return before, enter zero ($0) when the software asks for your prior-year AGI. The same applies if you’re a first-time filer over age 16.1Internal Revenue Service. Validating Your Electronically Filed Tax Return

Enter zero as well if last year’s return is still being processed. The IRS won’t have your AGI loaded yet, and typing in the number from your unprocessed return will trigger a rejection.1Internal Revenue Service. Validating Your Electronically Filed Tax Return

Dependents filing their own return follow the same self-select PIN process. A dependent who filed last year enters their own AGI; a first-time dependent filer enters zero.

If Your Return Gets Rejected

An AGI or PIN mismatch produces an immediate rejection with an IRS error code pointing at either the primary taxpayer or the spouse on a joint return.6Internal Revenue Service. IND-031-047Internal Revenue Service. IND-032-04 Work through the fixes in order:

  • Recheck the AGI against your originally filed prior-year return. Being off by a single dollar is enough to reject. Confirm you’re not pulling the number from an amended return.
  • Try your prior-year self-select PIN instead, if you used one and remember it.
  • Apply for an Identity Protection PIN at irs.gov/getanippin. A valid IP PIN bypasses the AGI check entirely.6Internal Revenue Service. IND-031-04
  • Correct the information and retransmit. If you scheduled a payment, update the payment date too.

Can’t resolve it before the deadline? Paper-file instead. When an e-filed return is rejected, you have until the later of the original filing deadline or 10 calendar days after the rejection notice to mail a paper return and still be considered on time.8Internal Revenue Service. The Identity Protection PIN Is a Separate Thing

If you’ve heard about an IRS-issued PIN, you may be thinking of the Identity Protection PIN. That’s a different system. The IP PIN is a six-digit number the IRS generates for your account each year, available in your online account starting in mid-January. It exists to protect against tax-related identity theft.9Internal Revenue Service. Get an Identity Protection PIN

You’ll have one if the IRS flagged you as an identity theft victim or if you voluntarily opted in. Once you have an IP PIN, you must include it on every federal return you file, electronic or paper, or the return will be rejected. If a dependent you claim has been assigned an IP PIN, that number also has to go on your return.10Internal Revenue Service. Here’s the useful part: a valid IP PIN replaces the AGI or prior-year self-select PIN for identity verification. You don’t need both.1Internal Revenue Service. If a Tax Professional Files for You

Returns filed through a paid preparer use the practitioner PIN method. You sign Form 8879 (IRS e-file Signature Authorization), and your preparer enters or generates the five-digit PIN on your behalf. This method does not require your prior-year AGI or self-select PIN for authentication, which makes it the practical option for anyone who can’t locate their AGI, keeps getting rejected, or is under 16 and ineligible for the self-select method.11Internal Revenue Service. Filing an Extension

E-filing Form 4868 (Application for Automatic Extension of Time to File) uses the same process. Your software asks for your prior-year AGI or self-select PIN to verify identity, and then you choose a five-digit PIN to sign the extension request.2Internal Revenue Service.
