A charge labeled “Google Tile Inc” on your bank or card statement is a Google Play payment for a Tile Bluetooth tracker subscription. Tile sells small devices that help you find lost keys, wallets, and bags, and when you subscribe through an Android app, Google processes the billing on Tile’s behalf. The charge is usually legitimate, though forgotten free trials and purchases made by family members account for most of the confusion.
Why Google’s Name Is on a Tile Charge
Google Play acts as the payment processor for subscriptions bought inside Android apps. That’s why the descriptor reads something like “GOOGLE *Tile Inc” instead of coming from Tile directly. Google is the merchant of record, collects the money, and passes the developer’s share along. You would see the same pattern for a streaming app, cloud storage, or a game bought through the Play Store.
Tile itself is now a subsidiary of Life360, which acquired it in late 2021.1Life360. Tile Joins Life360 The billing descriptor still says “Tile Inc,” not Life360, which adds another layer of confusion when you’re trying to place the charge.
What You’re Probably Paying For
Almost every recurring Google Tile Inc charge comes from one of two plans:
- Tile Premium: $2.99 per month or $29.99 per year. Includes smart alerts, 30-day location history, and extended out-of-range notifications.2Life360 Help Center. Tile Premium and Premium Protect Pricing
- Tile Premium Protect: $99.99 per year. Adds item reimbursement coverage up to $1,000 per year if Tile can’t help you find a lost item.2Life360 Help Center. Tile Premium and Premium Protect Pricing
Tile also offers a 30-day free trial for new subscribers.2Life360 Help Center. Tile Premium and Premium Protect Pricing If you don’t cancel before day 30, the trial converts to a paid subscription and bills your linked payment method. Most surprise charges start here: someone signs up, tries the app for a day, forgets it exists, and sees $29.99 land a month later.
Annual renewals catch people out more than monthly ones. A once-a-year $29.99 charge is easy to forget you authorized, and a $99.99 Premium Protect renewal can look outright fraudulent if you haven’t opened the Tile app in months. It bills on the anniversary of your original sign-up with no fresh confirmation.
How to Confirm the Charge Is Yours
The fastest check runs through Google Play. Open the Play Store app on your Android device, tap the menu, go to Payments & subscriptions, then Budget & history. Or visit pay.google.com and open the Activity tab. Every Google Play transaction gets an order number that starts with “GPA.” followed by digits. Write down the GPA number, the exact date, and the amount. All three matter if you need to request a refund or dispute the charge later.
Check Every Account in the Household
Shared tablets and Google Family groups are a common source of unexpected Tile charges. A child or partner may have installed the app and started a trial that then billed the family manager’s payment method. Google emails a receipt for each purchase, so search the inbox of every Google account tied to the family group. If you want to prevent repeats, turn on purchase approvals so family members need your sign-off before any Play Store purchase goes through.3Google Help. Purchase Approvals on Google Play
How to Cancel the Subscription
Canceling through Google Play is the only reliable way to stop future charges. Open the Play Store app, go to your subscriptions, select Tile, and tap Cancel subscription.4Google Play Help. Cancel, Pause, or Change a Subscription on Google Play Premium features stay active until the end of the current billing period, but no new charge will hit.
Deleting the Tile app does not cancel the subscription. This is the single most common mistake. The subscription lives in your Google Play account, not the app, so uninstalling changes nothing on the billing side.
How to Get a Refund
Google has a built-in refund tool. Go to play.google.com, find the transaction in your order history, and select Request a refund or Report a problem. You pick a reason and submit. Google reviews claims case by case, and approval is more likely for recent charges, accidental purchases, or subscriptions you never used after signing up.5Google Play Help. Learn About Google Play Refund Policies
Google does not guarantee prorated refunds for mid-cycle cancellations. Usually, canceling just stops the next renewal while you keep access through the period you already paid for.6Google Account Help. Purchase, Cancellation and Refund Policies If Google turns down your request and you believe the charge was genuinely unauthorized, your next move is a formal dispute through your bank or card issuer.
If the Charge Was Unauthorized
When someone used your account or payment method without permission, federal law gives you stronger protections than Google’s refund tool. The rules depend on whether the charge hit a debit card or a credit card.
Debit Cards
The Electronic Fund Transfer Act and Regulation E cap your liability for unauthorized debit transactions based on how fast you report them. Notify your bank within two business days of discovering the charge and your maximum liability is $50. Wait longer than two business days but report within 60 days of receiving the statement, and your exposure rises to $500.7eCFR. 12 CFR Part 205 – Electronic Fund Transfers (Regulation E) Wait longer than that and you can lose the full amount.
Credit Cards
Credit card disputes fall under the Fair Credit Billing Act, which caps liability for unauthorized charges at $50, with no liability at all for charges made after you report the card compromised.8Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1643 – Liability of Holder of Credit Card Notify your issuer in writing within 60 days of the statement date. Most major card issuers also offer zero-liability policies that go beyond the statutory minimum, so in practice you often owe nothing regardless of timing.
Whether you dispute through a bank or a card issuer, have your GPA order number, the transaction date, and the dollar amount in front of you before you call. Those three details move the investigation along faster than anything else.
Preventing the Next Surprise Charge
A few minutes of account maintenance saves the trouble of doing this again. Open the Play Store subscription list every so often and clear out anything you no longer use. Set a calendar reminder a few days before any annual renewal so you can cancel in advance if you’ve moved on. Turn on purchase approvals for every member of your Google Family group so no one else can start a trial on your card.3Google Help.
