The end-of-year tax form most Americans file is IRS Form 1040, the U.S. Individual Income Tax Return.1Internal Revenue Service. About Form 1040, U.S. Individual Income Tax Return It’s the return you fill out each spring to report the prior year’s income, claim deductions and credits, and settle up with the federal government. But you can’t finish the 1040 on its own. You need the income statements your employer, bank, brokerage, and any clients send you in January and February, and you may need extra schedules depending on what kind of income you had.
What Form 1040 Does
Form 1040 is the single document the IRS uses to collect individual income tax information from nearly every filer. You total your income, subtract deductions, apply credits, and end with either a balance due or a refund. If your paycheck withholding and estimated payments during the year came to more than your final tax bill, the difference comes back to you.
One of the first choices on the form is your filing status, which sets your tax bracket and the size of your standard deduction. For the 2025 tax year, filed in 2026, the standard deduction amounts are $15,750 for single filers, $31,500 for married couples filing jointly, $15,750 for married filing separately, and $23,625 for head of household.2Internal Revenue Service. The Income Forms You Need Before You File
You can’t complete the 1040 without the supporting documents that report what you were paid. The IRS gets copies of all of them, so the numbers on your return have to match.

Schedules You Attach When Your Return Is More Complicated
Form 1040 is a summary. When your finances go beyond wages and a standard deduction, you fill out additional schedules that feed into specific lines on the 1040, and you include only the ones that apply.13Internal Revenue Service. Schedules for Form 1040 and Form 1040-SR The common ones:
- Schedule A itemizes deductions like mortgage interest, state and local taxes, and charitable contributions instead of taking the standard deduction.
- Schedule B is required if you earned more than $1,500 in interest or ordinary dividends.
- Schedule C reports profit or loss from a business you run as a sole proprietor, including freelance work.
- Schedule D reports capital gains and losses from selling investments like stocks or real estate.

What Happens If You File or Pay Late
The IRS charges two separate penalties that can stack. The failure-to-file penalty is 5% of your unpaid tax for each month or partial month that your return is overdue, capping at 25%.19Internal Revenue Service. Failure to File Penalty The failure-to-pay penalty is a gentler 0.5% per month on the unpaid balance, also capping at 25%.20Internal Revenue Service. Failure to Pay Penalty
When both penalties apply in the same month, the IRS reduces the filing penalty by the payment penalty amount, so the combined bite isn’t a full 5.5%. Still, the math punishes not filing far more than not paying. If you owe money and can’t pay the full amount, file the return anyway. That alone saves you 4.5% per month compared to doing nothing.
