The 09M Army program is the enlistment designation for the Future Soldier Preparatory Course (FSPC), an active-duty training pipeline that gives recruits who fall just short of Army standards up to 90 days to qualify. It has two tracks: an academic track for applicants whose ASVAB scores are below the cutoff, and a fitness track for applicants who exceed the Army’s body fat limit by a small margin. You ship as an E-1, draw military pay, and move directly into basic training once you meet the standard.
Who Qualifies
Eligibility depends on which gap you need to close.
The academic track is open to applicants who score between 21 and 30 on the Armed Forces Qualification Test portion of the ASVAB. The Army’s minimum for standard enlistment is 31, so the track exists specifically for recruits sitting just under that line.1The United States Army. Army Announces Creation of Future Soldier Preparatory Course Recruits who already score between 31 and 49 can also volunteer for the academic track to push into a higher test category, which opens up more job options and potential enlistment bonuses.2The United States Army. The fitness track is for applicants whose body fat percentage exceeds the Army’s accession standard by 2 to 6 percent. The standards vary by age and gender. A male recruit aged 17 to 20, for example, must be at or below 20 percent body fat; a female recruit in the same age range must be at or below 30 percent.3The United States Army. The Army Body Composition Program (AR 600-9)
Both tracks share the same baseline requirements. You need a high school diploma or equivalent and must meet every other enlistment criterion, including citizenship or residency status and medical qualification. High school seniors can enlist under the 09M designation with a ship date scheduled after graduation.
How the Academic Track Works
The academic track runs in three-week cycles. Recruits scoring 21 to 30 attend at Fort Jackson, South Carolina; recruits in the 31 to 49 range attend at Fort Moore, Georgia.2The United States Army. Future Soldier Preparatory Course to Expand Based on Initial Success Instruction focuses on the subjects that drive ASVAB scores: math, reading comprehension, and mechanical knowledge, delivered in an intensive daily classroom format adapted from the Army’s Basic Skills Education Program.
At the end of each three-week block you retake the ASVAB. Hit 31 or above (from the 21–30 track) and you’re done. Jump into a higher test category (from the 31–49 track) and you can renegotiate your contract for better job options.4U.S. Army Fort Jackson. Results in the first year were strong. Ninety-five percent of academic track students moved up at least one test category within their first two attempts, with an average score gain of 17 points.2The United States Army. Future Soldier Preparatory Course to Expand Based on Initial Success
How the Fitness Track Works
The fitness track is built around the Army’s Holistic Health and Fitness model, which covers physical conditioning, mental health, nutrition, sleep, and spiritual readiness.5The United States Army. Future Soldier Preparatory Course Marks 1-Year Anniversary, Provides Path to Service The target is reducing body fat percentage to meet accession standards, not dropping weight on a scale. Daily training includes warm-up drills, resistance band work, deadlifts, and other structured exercise led by drill sergeants. The course is hosted at Fort Jackson.
In the program’s first year, fitness track students averaged 1.7 percent body fat loss per week, and 87 percent graduated within their first three weeks.2The United States Army. Future Soldier Preparatory Course to Expand Based on Initial Success The 90-day cap is the same as the academic track.
Pay and Benefits
You are on active duty the moment you ship, which means you draw military pay at the E-1 rank. Recruits enlisting through the FSPC receive the same pay, bonuses, and incentives as any other recruit.6The United States Army. What Happens When You Meet the Standard
Once you hit a qualifying score or reach the body fat standard, the 09M designation drops off and your enlistment contract is renegotiated. You then pick a Military Occupational Specialty from whatever jobs are available based on your new scores and current Army needs.4U.S. Army Fort Jackson. After you select your MOS, you move directly into Basic Combat Training or One Station Unit Training, depending on the job. There is no gap or waiting period between the FSPC and the next phase of training.
What Happens If You Don’t Qualify in 90 Days
If you use the full 90 days without meeting the required ASVAB score or body fat standard, you’re separated from the Army under an Entry Level Separation (Chapter 11 of Army Regulation 635-200). This is not a punitive discharge, carries no lasting stigma, and doesn’t bar you from trying again. Recruits separated under these circumstances can typically return and re-enlist after a waiting period of about six months.
Most participants don’t reach that point, especially in the academic track. The bigger risk is treating the 90 days as unlimited runway; recruits who take the program seriously from day one tend to test out in the first cycle or two.
Recent Program Changes
The FSPC has changed several times since its August 2022 launch. In 2023, the Army briefly offered a dual-track option that let recruits address academic and fitness shortfalls in a single enrollment.6The United States Army. Future Soldier Preparatory Course Now Offers Recruits Opportunity to Do Both Academic, Fitness Tracks In late 2025 the Army scaled that back, and recruits now enroll in either the academic or fitness track, not both at once. If you need help in both areas, ask your recruiter which track to prioritize and whether sequential enrollment is possible. Eligibility windows and thresholds can shift year to year as the Army adjusts its recruiting strategy, so confirm the current details before you plan around any specific number here.
