TFB on a W-2 stands for Taxable Fringe Benefits. It’s the label your employer uses to show the dollar value of non-cash perks — things like personal use of a company car or employer-paid life insurance above $50,000 — that count as income under federal tax law.1Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 61 – Gross Income Defined The number next to TFB is already baked into your total wages, so you don’t add it separately when you file.
Where TFB Appears and Why It’s Informational
You’ll find TFB in Box 14 of your W-2, a catch-all space employers use to give you extra detail about your pay.2Internal Revenue Service. 2026 General Instructions for Forms W-2 and W-3 Box 14 is informational. It doesn’t create a separate tax obligation, and the dollars listed there aren’t in addition to what appears elsewhere on your form.
The point most people miss: the TFB amount is already included in Box 1 (federal taxable wages), Box 3 (Social Security wages), and Box 5 (Medicare wages).2Internal Revenue Service. 2026 General Instructions for Forms W-2 and W-3 Your employer already withheld federal income tax, the 6.2% Social Security tax, and the 1.45% Medicare tax on it through regular payroll.3Internal Revenue Service. Topic No. 751, Social Security and Medicare Withholding Rates Think of Box 14 as an itemized receipt for what’s already in Box 1, not a second charge.
The value assigned to each benefit is its fair market value — what you’d pay to buy the same thing from an unrelated seller — calculated using IRS valuation rules.4Internal Revenue Service. Publication 15-B (2026), Employer’s Tax Guide to Fringe Benefits
Common Perks That Drive the TFB Number
A handful of workplace benefits typically account for what shows up on the TFB line.
Personal Use of a Company Vehicle
If your employer provides a car and you drive it for commuting, errands, or vacations, the value of that personal use is taxable. Employers can calculate it several ways, including multiplying personal miles by the 2026 standard business mileage rate of 72.5 cents per mile or using an annual lease value table tied to the car’s fair market value.5Internal Revenue Service. IRS Sets 2026 Business Standard Mileage Rate at 72.5 Cents per Mile For the cents-per-mile method in 2026, the vehicle’s value when first made available to you can’t exceed $61,700.6Internal Revenue Service. 2026 Standard Mileage Rates
Group-Term Life Insurance Over $50,000
The first $50,000 of employer-provided group-term life insurance is tax-free. Coverage above that generates taxable income based on IRS premium cost tables that vary by age — not on the actual premium your employer pays.7Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 79 – Group-Term Life Insurance Purchased for Employees
Off-Site Gym Memberships
When your employer pays for a membership at an outside gym, health club, or hotel fitness facility, the full value is taxable.8Internal Revenue Service. Additional Compensation On-premises facilities operated by your employer are treated differently, as noted below.
Moving Expense Reimbursements
Employer reimbursement of moving costs is taxable income. That treatment, originally temporary under the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, was made permanent by the One, Big, Beautiful Bill Act. The only carve-out is for active-duty Armed Forces members and certain intelligence community personnel relocating under government orders.9Internal Revenue Service. Education Assistance Above the Limit
Employers can provide up to $5,250 per year in educational assistance tax-free under a qualified program.10Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 US Code 127 – Educational Assistance Programs Anything above $5,250 gets added to your taxable wages and may show up in the TFB total.11Internal Revenue Service. Employers May Help with College Expenses Through Educational Assistance Programs The $5,250 cap is scheduled to adjust for inflation for tax years after 2026.
Commuting Benefits Above the Monthly Cap
Employer-provided transit passes, vanpool benefits, and qualified parking are tax-free up to $340 per month each for 2026.12Internal Revenue Service. What Shouldn’t Be In the TFB Total
Several categories of benefits are excluded from income entirely. If one of these appears in your TFB figure, that’s a reason to ask questions.
- De minimis benefits — small, infrequent perks like occasional snacks, coffee, holiday gifts, or the odd personal use of the office copier. Cash and gift cards generally don’t qualify, no matter how small.14Internal Revenue Service. De Minimis Fringe Benefits
- Working condition benefits — property or services you use for your job, such as a laptop, professional subscriptions, or job-related training, to the extent you could have deducted them as a business expense if you’d paid yourself.4Internal Revenue Service. - On-premises athletic facilities — a gym on your employer’s property, operated by your employer, and used almost entirely by employees and their families.8Internal Revenue Service. Additional Compensation
- Qualified transit, vanpool, and parking benefits, up to $340 per month each for 2026.12Internal Revenue Service. IRS Releases Tax Inflation Adjustments for Tax Year 2026

- The first $50,000 of employer-paid group-term life insurance.7Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 79 – Group-Term Life Insurance Purchased for Employees
- Employee discounts — tax-free on your employer’s own goods up to the employer’s gross profit percentage, and on services up to 20% of the price charged to outside customers. Anything above those limits becomes taxable.
What TFB Means When You File
You transfer the total from Box 1 of your W-2 to the wages line on Form 1040. Because TFB is already inside that Box 1 total, you don’t add the Box 14 figure a second time. Adding it would double-count the income and inflate your tax bill.
Box 14 can still matter at the state level. Some states treat certain benefits differently than federal law does, and if your state return asks about a specific Box 14 item, the TFB breakdown gives you the number. Rules vary, so check your state’s instructions.
If the TFB Number Looks Wrong
Start with your employer’s payroll or HR department. Ask them to review the calculation, and if they agree there was a mistake, they can issue a corrected W-2 on Form W-2c.
If your employer hasn’t fixed it by the end of February, you can call the IRS at 800-829-1040 or visit a Taxpayer Assistance Center to file a formal complaint. The IRS will send your employer a letter requesting a corrected form within ten days and will provide you with Form 4852, a substitute W-2 that lets you file your return on time.15Internal Revenue Service. W-2 – Additional, Incorrect, Lost, Non-Receipt, Omitted If you use Form 4852, base your wage and withholding estimates on your final pay stub for the year.
Hold on to pay stubs, benefit enrollment paperwork, and any correspondence with your employer. Those records protect you if the IRS later questions the income or withholding on your return.
