What Is Student Loan Deferment and How Does It Work?

Student loan deferment is a federally authorized pause on your monthly payments, available when specific life events make paying difficult: going back to school, losing a job, serving in the military, undergoing cancer treatment, and a handful of others. On certain loan types the government even pays the interest that builds up while you’re paused. Whether deferment is genuinely free money or a quiet addition to your balance comes down to two things: what kind of federal loans you have, and what you do with the interest that accrues.

Who Qualifies for Deferment

You don’t choose a deferment type by preference. You qualify based on your situation, and the federal system recognizes eight distinct categories.

In-school. You’re enrolled at least half-time at a school that participates in federal aid. This one is usually applied automatically when your school reports your enrollment, but confirm with your servicer.1Federal Student Aid. In-School Deferment Graduate and professional Direct PLUS borrowers get an additional six months after dropping below half-time.2Federal Student Aid. Student Loan Deferment

Unemployment. You’re actively seeking full-time work (30+ hours per week, position expected to last at least three months) and can’t find it.3eCFR. 34 CFR 685.204 – Deferment You prove it by showing you receive unemployment benefits, or by certifying that you’ve registered with an employment agency within 50 miles and made at least six job-search attempts in each six-month renewal period. Cumulative cap: three years.4Federal Student Aid. Unemployment Deferment Request One trap: refusing jobs because you consider yourself overqualified disqualifies you.

Economic hardship. You qualify if any one of three things is true: you receive a means-tested federal or state benefit such as TANF or SNAP; you work full-time but earn no more than federal minimum wage or 150% of the poverty guideline for your family size and state (whichever is greater); or you serve as a Peace Corps volunteer.2Federal Student Aid. Student Loan Deferment Three-year cumulative cap.

Military service and post-active duty. Available throughout active duty tied to a war, military operation, or national emergency. After qualifying service ends, a separate post-active duty deferment runs until you re-enroll at least half-time or until 13 months pass, whichever comes first.5Federal Student Aid. Military Service and Post-Active Duty Student Deferment Request No cumulative year cap on the active-duty portion.

Parent PLUS borrower. If you took a Direct PLUS Loan for your child’s education, you can defer while they’re enrolled at least half-time, plus six months after they drop below that or graduate.2Federal Student Aid. Student Loan Deferment Interest keeps accruing the whole time, since PLUS loans aren’t subsidized.

Cancer treatment. Covers you during treatment and for six months after it ends. A physician must certify it. Treatment expected to last over a year may be approved for one year initially, then extended with new certification.6Federal Student Aid. Cancer Treatment Deferment Request Eligible loans include Direct, FFEL, and Perkins loans that were made on or after September 28, 2018, or had already entered repayment by that date.

Graduate fellowship. You’re enrolled in an approved fellowship program providing financial support for graduate studies and research. Most qualifying programs are doctoral, though some master’s-level ones count.2Federal Student Aid. Student Loan Deferment

Rehabilitation training. You’re in an approved program for vocational, drug abuse, mental health, or alcohol abuse treatment. The program must be licensed by a state agency or the VA, follow a written plan with an expected end date, and require enough time to prevent you from working 30 or more hours per week.7Federal Student Aid. How to Apply

Each category has its own request form, available through the Federal Student Aid website or your servicer’s online portal. Fill it out, attach the required documentation (enrollment verification, physician certification, benefit award letters, pay stubs, proof of unemployment benefits, whatever your category requires), and submit it to your servicer.

Here’s the part that trips borrowers up. Processing can take several weeks, and you must keep making regular payments the entire time the application is pending. If you stop and the application is later denied, your loans become delinquent.2Federal Student Aid. Student Loan Deferment Keep copies of everything you submit. If you’re denied, the issue is almost always incomplete documentation; contact your servicer, fix it, resubmit, and keep paying in the meantime.

What Happens to Interest

This is where deferment either saves you real money or quietly grows your balance.

Subsidized vs. Unsubsidized Loans

On Direct Subsidized Loans, the federal government pays the interest that accrues during deferment. Your balance stays exactly where it was when the pause began. That’s the single biggest reason to prefer deferment over any other form of payment relief.8Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. What Is Student Loan Deferment?

On Direct Unsubsidized Loans, Direct PLUS Loans, and Consolidation Loans, interest accrues the entire time and you’re responsible for it.9Federal Student Aid. Get Temporary Relief – Deferment and Forbearance Perkins Loan holders, though no new Perkins loans have been issued since 2017, receive the same interest benefit as subsidized borrowers during deferment.

Capitalization

If you don’t pay the accrued interest on an unsubsidized loan before deferment ends, that interest capitalizes. It gets added to your principal, and from that point forward you pay interest on the larger amount.9Federal Student Aid. Get Temporary Relief – Deferment and Forbearance

Numbers help. A $10,000 unsubsidized loan at 6.39% (the current undergraduate rate for loans disbursed between July 2025 and June 2026) accrues roughly $53 per month in interest.10Federal Student Aid. Interest Rates and Fees for Federal Student Loans After a 12-month deferment, that’s about $639 added to principal. On a 10-year repayment term, you’d then pay interest on $10,639 for the remaining life of the loan, generating hundreds more in additional cost beyond the $639 itself.

Paying Interest While Paused

You can make interest-only payments during deferment to prevent capitalization. Your servicer can give you the exact monthly interest figure, and you can pay it in full or in part. Even partial payments reduce the amount that eventually capitalizes.2Federal Student Aid. Student Loan Deferment This is the single most effective thing you can do to limit the long-term cost of deferment on unsubsidized debt. If you can swing it, paying the monthly interest turns a potentially expensive pause into a genuinely cost-neutral one.

Deferment vs. Forbearance

Both pause your payments. They differ in two important ways: who qualifies, and what happens to interest.

Deferment requires you to meet one of the defined categories above. Forbearance is more discretionary. Your servicer can grant general forbearance based on financial difficulty, medical expenses, or other personal hardships that don’t fit a deferment category. Forbearance is easier to obtain, and that’s exactly why it tends to cost more.

The cost gap sits on subsidized loans. During deferment, the government covers interest on Direct Subsidized Loans. During forbearance, interest accrues on every loan type, including subsidized, and you owe all of it.11Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. What Is Student Loan Forbearance? Any unpaid interest capitalizes when forbearance ends, regardless of loan type.9Federal Student Aid. Get Temporary Relief – Deferment and Forbearance Forbearance is granted in 12-month increments.

If you qualify for deferment, take it. Forbearance is the fallback for when the deferment categories don’t fit.

Credit Score

An approved deferment won’t hurt your credit. Servicers report your account monthly, and during an approved pause your loans show a “deferred” status rather than past due. Some credit scoring models exclude deferred student loans from the calculation entirely.

The word “approved” is doing the work. If you stop paying before the deferment is officially granted, those missed payments can be reported as delinquent. If a negative report was filed during a period when you actually qualified for in-school, cancer treatment, rehabilitation training, or military deferment, you may be able to get it corrected retroactively by sending supporting documentation to your servicer.

Progress Toward Forgiveness

Here’s a cost that doesn’t appear on any balance: time toward loan forgiveness.

Public Service Loan Forgiveness

PSLF requires 120 qualifying monthly payments while you work for a qualifying employer. As a general rule, months in deferment do not count.9Federal Student Aid. Get Temporary Relief – Deferment and Forbearance Two exceptions matter. Economic hardship deferment during Peace Corps or AmeriCorps service does count, so volunteers should specifically request that type. Military-related deferments and forbearances also count as qualifying payments.12Federal Student Aid. Public Service Loan Forgiveness FAQs If you’re pursuing PSLF and get placed on in-school deferment because you returned to school, you can ask your servicer to remove the deferment so you can keep making qualifying payments, as long as you still work full-time for a qualifying employer.

Income-Driven Repayment Forgiveness

IDR plans forgive your remaining balance after 20 or 25 years of qualifying payments. Deferment months generally don’t count toward that timeline going forward.13Federal Student Aid. IDR Account Adjustment

If you’re close to either PSLF or IDR forgiveness, think hard before entering deferment. An income-driven plan with a $0 monthly payment, available when your income is low enough, keeps the forgiveness clock running. Deferment stops it.

Private Student Loans

Everything above applies to federal loans only. Private student loans run on separate rules set by each lender in your loan contract, not by federal regulation. Some private lenders offer deferment or forbearance options, but terms, fees, and interest treatment are often less favorable than the federal versions.14Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Is Forbearance or Deferment Available for Private Student Loans? Interest almost always keeps accruing. If you have private loans and need relief, contact your lender directly to see what your agreement allows.

When Deferment Ends

Payments resume when the deferment period expires. Event-based deferments end when the event does. Time-limited ones (unemployment, economic hardship) expire at the end of the approved period and require you to reapply if you still qualify and haven’t hit the cumulative cap.

Before the deferment ends, look at the accrued interest on any unsubsidized loans. Paying some or all of it before capitalization reduces your long-term cost. When payments restart, they’ll be based on whatever repayment plan you were on going in, recalculated to reflect any capitalized interest that increased your principal. If the new payment doesn’t fit your budget, call your servicer before the deferment ends to switch plans or explore income-driven options.
