Huntington Standby Cash is a digital line of credit between $100 and $750 that eligible Huntington checking customers can tap through the mobile app or online banking, with no interest or fees when automatic payments are turned on. Without autopay, the line carries 1% monthly interest, which works out to a 12% annual percentage rate. Whatever you borrow has to be paid back within three months.1Huntington Bank. There’s no card, no paper application, and no branch visit. If you qualify, you move money from the credit line into your linked checking account, and from there you spend it like any other balance: debit card, bill pay, ATM withdrawal. Huntington sets your limit based on your account activity and adjusts it over time.
What It Costs
The whole cost picture turns on one choice: autopay or not. Turn on automatic payments and you pay zero interest and zero fees. Skip autopay and Huntington charges 1% monthly interest on the outstanding balance, a 12% APR.1Huntington Bank. Standby Cash Line of Credit On a $500 balance, that’s about $5 a month.
Even the paid version is cheap compared to the alternatives it’s designed to replace. A typical payday lender charges around $15 per $100 borrowed over two weeks, roughly 400% APR; a $300 payday loan runs about $45 in fees, and rolling it over pushes that to $90 without reducing what you owe.2Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. What Are the Costs and Fees for a Payday Loan The same $300 through Standby Cash with autopay costs nothing.
Who Qualifies
Standby Cash is only open to existing Huntington customers who meet three conditions:
- An open Huntington consumer checking account with online banking enabled.
- At least $1,000 in deposits to that account each month for three consecutive months. The deposits don’t have to be direct deposit; any qualifying deposits that add up to $1,000 count.
- An average daily balance of $200 or more over the last 30 days.
Huntington doesn’t pull your credit score to decide eligibility. The bank looks at your checking account behavior instead: deposit patterns, average balance, overdraft history. That’s unusual, and it’s the reason people with thin or damaged credit can still get approved if their banking looks steady.1Huntington Bank. Standby Cash Line of Credit
New Huntington customers won’t see Standby Cash right away. The three-month deposit requirement means roughly 90 days of normal account use before the option appears.
How to Borrow and Pay It Back
Inside the Huntington app or online banking, go to the Standby Cash section, enter the amount you want, and confirm. The money moves into your checking account immediately, and you’ll see a summary of the transfer and your repayment terms right after. From there it spends like any other balance in the account.
Repayment runs on a three-month clock. You can set up automatic payments or make manual transfers yourself. Autopay is the version worth choosing because it eliminates all interest; manual repayment triggers the 1% monthly charge on whatever balance is outstanding.1Huntington Bank. Automatic payments are scheduled by the bank and pulled from your checking account on set dates, and they won’t overdraw the account. If your balance is too low, Huntington skips the payment and retries once you have enough funds.1Huntington Bank. Standby Cash Line of Credit There’s still a wrinkle worth watching. The scheduled payment reduces your available checking balance even if it doesn’t trigger an overdraft on its own, so other transactions clearing around the same date can push you negative. Keep an eye on the account around payment days.
How It Shows Up on Your Credit Report
Huntington doesn’t check your credit to approve you, but it does report Standby Cash to the credit bureaus as a new account. Reporting starts within one to two weeks of enrollment and covers the open date, your credit line usage, and payment history.1Huntington Bank. Standby Cash Line of Credit
That reporting can help you. On-time payments add a positive tradeline, and payment history is the single most influential factor in credit scoring, so steady repayment through Standby Cash builds real value if your credit file is thin or recovering.3Huntington Bank. It can also hurt you. Late payments get reported and drag your score down. If you stop paying, Huntington eventually charges the account off, which closes it permanently, reports the charge-off to the bureaus, and ends your access to Standby Cash going forward.3Huntington Bank. Building Credit With No History: Does Standby Cash Affect Credit A charge-off is one of the most damaging entries a credit report can carry, so a small ignored balance can create problems far out of proportion to the dollar amount.
It Isn’t Overdraft Protection
Huntington is explicit on this point. Overdraft protection is a separate feature that automatically covers transactions when your checking balance reaches zero. Standby Cash requires you to transfer funds yourself, either before an overdraft to prevent it or after one to bring the account back to positive.4Huntington Bank. What Is an Overdraft Loan
There’s a timing issue baked into using it as a backstop. If your checking account is negative, Huntington suspends the Standby Cash line until the account is positive again.4Huntington Bank. What Is an Overdraft Loan The line is unavailable at the moment you’d most want to reach for it, which is why it works better as a preemptive transfer than as a rescue after the fact.
When It Fits and When It Doesn’t
Standby Cash fits a narrow situation well: occasional small shortfalls between paychecks for someone who wants to avoid payday loan pricing. With autopay, it’s effectively a free short-term loan as long as you repay within three months, and even the 12% APR version undercuts credit card cash advances and payday lenders by a wide margin.
It fits poorly if your checking balance regularly runs near zero. Scheduled autopayments reduce available funds, and a line that gets suspended whenever the account goes negative won’t solve a chronic cash-flow gap. In that situation Standby Cash adds credit-reporting risk without reliably delivering the money when you need it.
