PUCC on a W-2 is an employer-created label in Box 14 that almost always stands for Personal Use of Company Car. The dollar amount beside it is the taxable value of driving a company vehicle for personal trips, and your employer has already added it to the wages in Box 1, so you do not owe separate tax on it when you file. A smaller number of employers use PUCC for something else entirely, usually pension contributions under a shared corporate retirement plan, so if the amount looks large or unfamiliar, confirm the meaning with your payroll department before you file.
Why PUCC Shows Up in Box 14
When an employer gives you a company car and you drive it for commuting or personal errands, the value of that personal use is a taxable fringe benefit. The IRS requires the employer to calculate that value, include it in your taxable wages, and, if 100% of the vehicle’s annual lease value was included in your income, report it separately in Box 14 or on a separate statement.1Internal Revenue Service. General Instructions for Forms W-2 and W-3 (2026) PUCC is the shorthand many payroll systems use for that line.
The point of the entry is transparency. Your Box 1 wages will be higher than the cash pay you actually received during the year, and the PUCC figure shows you exactly how much of the gap came from the vehicle benefit.
Why the Same Code Can Mean Different Things
Box 14 is the catch-all section of the W-2. Boxes 1 through 13 report items the IRS defines precisely, but Box 14 is open space where an employer can flag anything it wants you to see. The IRS tells employers to label each item but does not dictate what those labels have to say.1Internal Revenue Service. General Instructions for Forms W-2 and W-3 (2026) The result: one company’s PUCC may mean personal vehicle use, while another company uses the same four letters to track pension contributions or some other internal category.
Common Box 14 entries include state disability insurance, union dues, uniform payments, health premiums, educational assistance, and pension contributions. If your pay stub or benefits portal has a code key, that is the fastest place to confirm what PUCC means at your company. Otherwise, ask payroll or HR directly.
One formatting note for the 2026 tax year: the IRS split the old Box 14 into Box 14a, which now carries the “Other” information (where PUCC will appear), and Box 14b, a new field used only when an employer reports cash tips under Box 12 Code TP.1Internal Revenue Service. General Instructions for Forms W-2 and W-3 (2026) The split does not change how PUCC is taxed.
If PUCC Is Personal Use of a Company Car
In this case, the amount has already been added to your Box 1 wages, so there is nothing more to pay when you file. The benefit is also subject to Social Security and Medicare taxes, so it should appear in Boxes 3 and 5 as well.
A quick check: pull your final pay stub of the year. Your Box 1 wages should equal your total cash pay plus the PUCC amount and any other non-cash benefits. If the numbers line up, you are done. If they don’t, the employer may have double-counted the vehicle value or left it out of one of the wage boxes, and payroll should take a second look.
If PUCC Is a Pension Contribution
Some employers, particularly large corporations with subsidiaries that share a single retirement plan, use PUCC as an internal label for pension contributions. Under federal tax law, employees across related companies in a controlled group can be treated as working for a single employer for retirement plan purposes, and one plan can cover them all.2Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 414 – Definitions and Special Rules This arrangement is common in the utility and energy sectors.
If that is what PUCC represents on your W-2, the tax treatment depends on whether the contributions were pre-tax or after-tax.
Pre-Tax Contributions
Pre-tax contributions have already been subtracted from the wages in Box 1. You will not owe federal income tax on them until you take money out of the plan in retirement. Lower Box 1 wages also mean a lower adjusted gross income, which can affect eligibility for credits and deductions that phase out at higher incomes.3Internal Revenue Service. Definition of Adjusted Gross Income
Pre-tax pension deferrals are still subject to Social Security and Medicare taxes. The IRS treats employee elective salary deferrals that are pre-tax as exempt from federal income tax withholding but not from FICA.4Internal Revenue Service. Are Retirement Plan Contributions Subject to Withholding for FICA, Medicare, or Federal Income Tax Those amounts appear in Boxes 3 and 5 even though they are excluded from Box 1.
After-Tax Contributions
After-tax contributions stay in Box 1 because they were never excluded from your income. You paid tax on that money through payroll withholding, and you will not be taxed on those specific contributions again when you withdraw them in retirement, though earnings on them will be taxable. Some union and utility contracts require mandatory after-tax pension contributions, which is often why the PUCC number is large enough to catch your eye.
Entering PUCC in Tax Software
When you get to the W-2 screen, type “PUCC” and the dollar amount into the Box 14 field (Box 14a on 2026 forms). The software will ask you to pick a category from a dropdown. PUCC will not appear as a named option because it is not a standardized IRS code. Select “Other (not classified)” or the closest general equivalent. The program will treat the entry as informational and will not add income, generate a credit, or trigger a deduction on its own.
For paper filers, Box 14 amounts generally do not carry over to any line on Form 1040. You attach the W-2, and the Box 14 data stays there for the record.5Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Form 1040 (2025) Box 14 entries only matter on your return when they represent a specifically deductible item, such as state or local taxes you can claim on Schedule A. Personal vehicle use already included in Box 1, and pre-tax pension contributions already excluded from Box 1, do not fall into that category.
If the PUCC Amount Looks Wrong
If the number does not match your year-end pay stub, or the code appears mislabeled, start with your employer’s payroll department. Employers are required to issue a corrected Form W-2c as soon as they discover an error.1Internal Revenue Service. General Instructions for Forms W-2 and W-3 (2026)
If your employer will not fix it or has gone out of business, and you still have no corrected form by the end of February, call the IRS at 800-829-1040 to file a W-2 complaint. The IRS will send your employer a letter demanding a corrected form within ten days. If that produces nothing, the IRS will send you Form 4852 to use as a substitute W-2, and you will estimate wages and withholding from your final pay stub.6Internal Revenue Service. W-2 – Additional, Incorrect, Lost, Non-Receipt, Omitted Filing with Form 4852 can slow your refund while the IRS verifies the figures. If a corrected W-2 later arrives with different numbers, you will need to file an amended return on Form 1040-X.
