If you see a charge labeled “paygamemoney” on your bank statement, it almost always comes from a purchase made on Roblox. Roblox routes payments through third-party processors, and the billing descriptor those processors send to your bank doesn’t always include the word “Roblox.” The charge usually traces back to someone in your household buying Robux (the in-game currency) or a Roblox Premium subscription. Before you call the bank, check every Roblox account tied to your card, because filing a chargeback without doing that first can get the associated Roblox account permanently deleted.
Why the Descriptor Looks Strange
Roblox doesn’t process its own payments. Two companies handle that work behind the scenes: Stripe and Xsolla.1Roblox Support. Adding and Updating Payment Information When either processor sends the transaction to your bank, the descriptor it generates may not say “Roblox” anywhere. “Paygamemoney” is one of those processor-generated labels.
The dollar amount is often a tell. Common Robux packs sell at roughly $5, $10, $20, or $50, and Roblox Premium subscriptions bill at set monthly tiers. If the charge matches one of those, it’s almost certainly a legitimate purchase rather than fraud.
How to Verify the Charge
Start with the email inbox linked to the card. Roblox and its processors send confirmation emails with a timestamp and amount for every purchase. If the amount and date line up with the statement entry, you have your answer.
Then log into every Roblox account that has access to your payment method. Inside account settings, the billing or transaction history shows every completed and pending purchase along with the payment method used. In households with children, this is where most of these mysteries end. A child buying a Robux pack on a shared tablet rarely announces it, and the charge can sit on a statement for days before anyone notices. Check every account in the home before taking any further step.
Contact Roblox Before Your Bank
This is where people get the order wrong. The instinct is to call the bank and dispute the charge. With Roblox, that sequence can backfire. Roblox treats chargebacks filed through a bank or payment provider as a violation of its Terms of Use, and accounts tied to those chargebacks are subject to permanent deletion.2Roblox Support. Unauthorized Charges and Refund Requests If a child has spent months or years building an account with purchased items, all of that can be lost.
Go through Roblox billing support first. Give them the transaction details. Their team investigates and may issue a refund for eligible purchases. Once a bank dispute is filed, however, Roblox will no longer process a refund directly, because the payment provider’s dispute process takes over.2Roblox Support. Unauthorized Charges and Refund Requests The direct refund path keeps the account intact. The bank dispute path risks destroying it.
If You Need to Dispute Through the Bank
If Roblox won’t cooperate or you’re confident the charge is fraudulent, federal law gives you protections. Which law applies depends on the card type.
Debit Cards
Debit card and bank account transactions fall under the Electronic Fund Transfer Act and Regulation E. Your bank must investigate the reported error within 10 business days of receiving your notice, with an extension to 45 days permitted if the bank provisionally credits your account within those first 10 business days.3Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. 12 CFR 1005.11 – Procedures for Resolving Errors
Timing drives your liability. Report an unauthorized transfer within two business days of learning about it, and your maximum loss is $50. Report after two business days but within 60 days of the statement, and exposure rises to $500. Miss the 60-day window, and you can be liable for the full amount of any transfers that occur after that deadline.4Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. 12 CFR 1005.6 – Liability of Consumer for Unauthorized Transfers
Credit Cards
Credit card disputes run on a different track. Under the Fair Credit Billing Act, liability for unauthorized charges is capped at $50. Send a written dispute to your issuer’s billing inquiry address within 60 days of the statement date showing the error. The issuer must acknowledge the letter within 30 days and resolve the dispute within 90 days. While the investigation is open, you can withhold payment on the disputed amount without being reported delinquent or sent to collections.5Federal Trade Commission. Using Credit Cards and Disputing Charges
Keep copies of everything: the dispute letter, emails with Roblox support, screenshots of the statement, and a log of when each communication was sent. Documentation is what separates a successful claim from one that stalls.
When It Really Is Fraud
Not every paygamemoney charge traces back to someone in the house. If you’ve checked every Roblox account, reviewed every confirmation email, and confirmed no one authorized the purchase, you may be looking at actual unauthorized use of your payment information. Contact your bank right away to report the fraud and request a new card or account number. The liability limits above depend on prompt reporting, and the two-business-day debit window is tight.
Also contact Roblox support to report that someone may have gained access to an account using your payment details. In genuine fraud situations, file the bank dispute and the Roblox report at the same time. Preserving the account matters less when the account itself may be compromised.
Preventing the Next Surprise Charge
Once the current charge is sorted, the fix is making sure it doesn’t repeat. Roblox and the device running it both offer controls.
Monthly Spending Limits
Roblox lets a parent set a monthly spending cap on a child’s account. You need a linked Roblox account with parent privileges. From the parent account, go to Settings, then Parental Controls, then Spending Restrictions, and set the monthly limit. Purchases are blocked for the rest of the month once the cap is reached. Two gaps worth knowing: the limit doesn’t apply to gift card redemptions, and it may not work on certain console devices, where you’ll need to set separate limits directly on the console.6Roblox Support. Spend Notifications
You can also opt into email alerts when a purchase is made on a child’s account. Add your email to the child’s account under “Account Info” in settings and configure notifications for all spending activity.7Roblox Support. Spend Notifications Controls FAQ It won’t prevent charges, but you’ll know within minutes rather than weeks.
Device-Level Controls
The device itself has its own layer of protection, and it covers every app, not just Roblox.
- On iPhone and iPad, open Settings, go to Screen Time, tap Content & Privacy Restrictions, then iTunes & App Store Purchases, and set In-App Purchases to “Don’t Allow.” You can also require a password for every purchase and use Ask to Buy for children in your Family Sharing group.8Apple. Use Screen Time to Turn Off In-App Purchases on Your iPhone or iPad
- On Android, Google Play’s Family Link can require parental approval for all purchases. When a child tries to buy something, you get a notification to approve or deny.
Device-level controls are the strongest safeguard because they work independently of the game’s settings. Even if a child navigates past Roblox’s spending restrictions, the device itself will block the transaction or demand a password.
