If “Pay Deal UK” has shown up on your bank statement, it is almost certainly a repayment collected by Gain Credit LLC, the company behind short-term lending brands including Lending Stream and Drafty. The descriptor is the name attached to the payment processor, not the brand you originally signed up with, which is why it can look unfamiliar even when the charge is legitimate.
Who Gain Credit Is and Why the Name Looks Unfamiliar
Gain Credit LLC is a Delaware-registered company that runs several high-cost, short-term lending products in the UK. Its best-known brand is Lending Stream, which offers small emergency loans. Drafty, a revolving credit line that works more like an overdraft, is another Gain Credit product.1Drafty. Drafty: Line of Credit Direct Lender Both are regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority, and the FCA register shows Gain Credit LLC trading under four names.2Financial Conduct Authority. The Financial Services Register – Gain Credit LLC
Repayments are processed through a centralised system rather than billed under each brand. Your bank receives the processor’s descriptor, not the product name. The “UK” simply indicates the transaction went through the company’s UK division. So if you took out a Lending Stream loan, your paperwork says Lending Stream, but your statement may say Pay Deal UK. That gap between what you signed for and what you see on the statement is the usual source of confusion.
How to Confirm the Charge Is Yours
Before anything else, check whether the amount and date match a loan you already have. Search your email for “Lending Stream,” “Drafty,” “Gain Credit,” or “loan agreement.” Most lenders send a confirmation and a repayment schedule when the loan is drawn, and those dates and amounts should line up with the statement entry.
Your banking app will also show a transaction reference alongside the Pay Deal UK descriptor. Write it down. If the payment is a Direct Debit, look for the mandate reference, which links back to the instruction you authorised. Customer service teams on both the bank and lender side use these details to pull the exact record.
If you never applied for a Lending Stream loan, never signed up for Drafty, and cannot find any correspondence, treat the charge as potentially unauthorised and move to the dispute steps below.
Is It a Direct Debit or a Recurring Card Payment?
How you stop future charges depends on the payment type, so identify which one you are dealing with.
A Direct Debit pulls a fixed amount on a scheduled date. Your statement will show a Direct Debit mandate reference, and you would have authorised it when the loan was set up. Direct Debits are covered by the Direct Debit Guarantee.
A continuous payment authority, also called a recurring card payment, lets the lender charge your debit or credit card on a recurring basis without asking each time. CPAs are commonly used for short-term loan repayments.3Financial Conduct Authority. Recurring Card Payments If you have an overdue balance, the lender may use the existing card authority to try to collect. For high-cost short-term credit, the FCA rules stop a lender from making further CPA attempts on the same debt after two failed payment requests.4Financial Conduct Authority. FCA Handbook – CONC 7.6 Exercise of Continuous Payment Authority
A one-off card payment is a single manual payment you made yourself. These rarely cause confusion because you actively initiated them.
How to Stop Future Payments
Cancelling a Direct Debit
You can cancel any Direct Debit at any time by contacting your bank or building society, or through your banking app. Do it at least a full working day before the next payment is due, because once a payment is in flight it may be too late to stop that specific collection.5Pay.UK. Cancelling a Direct Debit Cancelling the Direct Debit does not clear what you owe. The balance remains, and the lender can pursue it another way.
Cancelling a Continuous Payment Authority
You have the right to cancel a CPA by telling your card issuer to stop the payments. The card issuer must comply, and cannot insist that you speak to the lender first. Make the request by the end of the business day before the next payment is due. After cancellation, any further charges the lender takes from your card count as unauthorised transactions, and your card issuer must refund them immediately.3Financial Conduct Authority. Recurring Card Payments The underlying debt still stands.
Disputing an Unauthorised or Incorrect Charge
If a Pay Deal UK transaction was genuinely unauthorised or taken in error, you have several routes.
Direct Debit Guarantee
The Direct Debit Guarantee entitles you to a full and immediate refund from your bank if a payment was taken in error, or if the amount or date changed without proper notice. Organisations collecting by Direct Debit normally have to notify you at least ten working days in advance of any change.6Pay.UK. Direct Debit Guarantee Contact your bank to invoke it. Banks tend to process these refunds quickly because the scheme rules require it.
Payment Services Regulations 2017
For any unauthorised payment, the Payment Services Regulations 2017 require your bank to refund the full amount by the end of the business day after it becomes aware the transaction was unauthorised. The bank must also restore the account to the state it would have been in, including reversing any charges or interest that resulted.7Legislation.gov.uk. The Payment Services Regulations 2017 – Regulation 76 The exception is where the bank has reasonable grounds to suspect you are acting fraudulently.
Chargeback for Card Payments
If the transaction was a one-off card payment or an unauthorised CPA charge, ask your card provider to initiate a chargeback. Your card provider contacts the retailer’s bank to reclaim the money on your behalf.8UK Finance. Chargeback and Section 75 Chargeback is not a legal right in the way the Direct Debit Guarantee is, but card networks such as Visa commit to treating claims fairly and running the dispute process.9Visa. Checking the Amount Against the FCA Price Cap
Because Lending Stream and similar products count as high-cost short-term credit, they sit under the FCA’s price cap. You should never repay more than double the amount you originally borrowed, including all interest and fees. For a typical 30-day loan repaid on time, the cost should not exceed £24 for every £100 borrowed.10Financial Conduct Authority. PS14/16: Detailed Rules for the Price Cap on High-Cost Short-Term Credit If the Pay Deal UK amounts on your statement add up to more than twice what you borrowed, raise it with the lender.
If you think you were lent to irresponsibly, or the lender did not run proper affordability checks, complain directly to Gain Credit LLC. If the company does not resolve your complaint within eight weeks, or you are not satisfied with the outcome, the Financial Ombudsman Service can review the case at no cost to you.11Financial Ombudsman Service.
