A “Lux Rewards” or “Lux Rewards Cashback” line on your bank statement is a cashback credit, not a charge. Money was added to your account because a debit or credit card registered with the Lux Rewards card-linked loyalty program was used at one of its partner venues. The credit posts automatically after the purchase, which is why it can appear days later without any obvious connection to a specific meal, hotel, or shop visit.
How the Credit Ends Up on Your Statement
Lux Rewards is a card-linked loyalty platform that works directly with the Visa, Amex, and Mastercard networks. Once a card is registered, the platform monitors transactions in real time and triggers a cashback deposit whenever that card is used at a participating restaurant, hotel, bar, or other partner merchant. No coupon, app scan, or mention to the server is required at checkout.1LUX Rewards. Privacy Policy
The credit typically posts within five working days of the qualifying purchase, though it can occasionally take longer.2Barclaycard. LUX Rewards Terms and Conditions On most banking apps it shows up in green or with a plus sign, and often carries a reference code alongside the descriptor that can help you trace it back to the visit that earned it.
Why You Might Not Remember Signing Up
Card-linking programs are often bundled inside other services, so enrollment can happen without a distinct “Lux Rewards” sign-up moment. A few common explanations:
- A bank or airline you use has integrated Lux Rewards into its own rewards program, and you opted in when activating a different loyalty feature.
- Someone else on the account (an authorized user or joint holder) linked the card from their own device.
- You did register directly and simply don’t recall it. Search your email for a confirmation message from Lux Rewards, which would show when and how the card was enrolled.
The app or web dashboard is the fastest way to confirm. It lists your cashback history and which venue triggered each credit, so a mystery entry on your bank statement usually resolves into a specific transaction once you log in.
What to Do If You Didn’t Authorize It
If none of those explanations fit, contact your bank. An unexplained credit can still be a sign that your card details are linked to a service without your consent, and the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency recommends notifying your bank promptly whenever you spot unauthorized activity.3HelpWithMyBank.gov. What Do I Do About Unauthorized Charges on My Credit Card?
Federal Regulation E gives you 60 days from the date the statement was sent to report errors involving electronic fund transfers, including credits you didn’t authorize. Your bank must investigate, provide provisional credit while it looks into the issue, and resolve the matter within prescribed timeframes.4Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Regulation E Section 1005.11 – Procedures for Resolving Errors Missing that 60-day window can limit your rights, so don’t wait.
One reassuring detail: Lux Rewards does not store your actual card number. Card details are tokenized through a third-party provider (Fidel API), and the platform only receives the date, time, location, and amount of transactions at partner venues.1LUX Rewards. Privacy Policy
Cashback That Should Have Appeared but Didn’t
The opposite problem is also common: you ate at a partner restaurant and no credit showed up. Usual causes include using a different card than the one linked to the program, a venue that recently joined or left the network, or a merchant system that didn’t transmit the transaction data cleanly. Give it at least five working days before assuming the cashback is missing.2Barclaycard. LUX Rewards Terms and Conditions
After that, open the Lux Rewards app and check the transaction history. If the purchase is listed but the cashback isn’t, use the app’s help section to file a claim. Support will review the transaction with the merchant and respond by email.
Is the Cashback Taxable?
Cashback earned from spending is generally not taxable income. The IRS treats these rewards as a rebate that reduces the purchase price rather than as new income. Revenue Ruling 76-96 (as modified by Revenue Ruling 2005-28) establishes that a rebate received from the party you paid is an adjustment to the purchase price, not an accession to wealth, and is excluded from gross income.5Internal Revenue Service. PLR-141607-09
Because of that treatment, credit card issuers and loyalty platforms don’t issue a Form 1099-MISC for spending-based cashback. A sign-up bonus with no spending requirement is a different matter and can be taxable, since it isn’t reducing the price of anything you bought.
If you’re claiming a business deduction, the deductible expense shrinks by the cashback amount. Spend $500 on a business dinner and earn $25 back, and your deductible cost is $475.
Stopping Future Credits
If you’d rather not receive the cashback at all, you can unlink your card through the account settings in the Lux Rewards app. That stops the platform from receiving any future transaction data from the card. Closing the account entirely removes your profile from the service. Lux Rewards Ltd is the data controller, and requests to delete personal data can be sent through the contact information in its privacy policy.1LUX Rewards. Privacy Policy
If a bank or airline program enrolled you, unlinking through the Lux Rewards app addresses the card-linking piece, but you may also want to review the settings of the partner program that opted you in, so the same card isn’t relinked automatically.
