  • The tax return transcript shows most line items from your original 1040-series return as filed, along with any forms and schedules you attached. It does not reflect changes made after you filed. This is the type mortgage lenders most commonly request. Available for the current year and three prior tax years.
  • The tax account transcript shows basic data like filing status, adjusted gross income, taxable income, and payment types. Unlike the return transcript, it includes changes made after filing, such as amended return adjustments or additional payments. Available for the current year and up to nine prior years online, or older years by mail.
  • The record of account transcript combines the return transcript and the account transcript into a single, more detailed document. Available for the current year and three prior tax years.
  • The wage and income transcript shows data from information returns filed by employers and financial institutions, such as W-2s, 1099s, 1098s, and 5498s. State and local wage information is not included. Available for up to ten years, though current-year data typically is not available until the following year.4Internal Revenue Service. Why Requests Get Rejected

The IRS rejects Form 4506-T requests more often than you might expect, usually for straightforward errors.

  • Address mismatch. The address on line 3 must match the IRS’s current address of record for you. If you moved and did not update your address with the IRS, your request will be rejected. To fix this, file Form 8822 (Change of Address) and wait for the update to process before resubmitting.10IRS.gov. 3.5.21 Return and Income Verification Services (RAIVS) – Processing Requests for Tax Return/Return Information
  • Name or SSN mismatch. If the name or Social Security Number on the form does not match what the IRS has on file, for example if you changed your name after marriage but filed under your previous name, the request will be rejected. Sign the form using the name as it appeared on the original return and, if changed, also sign your current name.
  • Expired signature. The IRS must receive the form within 120 days of the date you signed it. Forms that arrive after this window are automatically rejected.4Internal Revenue Service. Form 4506-T, Request for Transcript of Tax Return
  • Missing signature. An unsigned form cannot be processed. Both the signature and date fields must be completed.
  • Wrong tax form number. Line 6 requires the form number of the return you are requesting a transcript for. Entering the wrong number or leaving it blank will result in rejection.

When a Lender Asks You to Sign Form 4506-C Instead

If a mortgage lender or other financial institution tells you they need your tax transcripts, they will usually handle the request themselves using Form 4506-C rather than having you submit Form 4506-T. Form 4506-C is the version designed for the IRS Income Verification Express Service (IVES), which delivers transcripts electronically to authorized participants like banks and credit unions.11Internal Revenue Service. Income Verification Express Service (IVES)

You sign the Form 4506-C to authorize the lender to receive your transcript, and the lender submits it through the IRS’s secure electronic portal. The transcript is delivered directly to the lender without being mailed to you first. If your lender asks you to sign a “4506” form, it is likely Form 4506-C for this purpose.

Requesting Transcripts for Someone Who Has Died

If you need tax transcripts for someone who has passed away, for example to settle their estate or file a final return, you can use Form 4506-T, but additional documentation is required. The IRS needs proof that you are legally authorized to manage the deceased person’s affairs.12Internal Revenue Service. Request Deceased Person’s Information

Along with the completed Form 4506-T, submit a copy of the death certificate and proof of your authority to act on behalf of the estate. This proof is typically either court-issued Letters Testamentary (sometimes called Letters of Administration) or IRS Form 56, Notice Concerning Fiduciary Relationship, with a copy of the court appointment attached.13Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Form 56 Form 56 notifies the IRS that you are the executor, administrator, or other authorized fiduciary for the deceased taxpayer’s account. You will need the deceased person’s full name, last known address, and Social Security Number to complete the request.
