A “CR ADJ Membership Fee” line on your American Express statement is a credit adjustment refunding all or part of your annual card fee. “CR” means credit (money back to the account), “ADJ” means adjustment, and “Membership Fee” is the annual fee on cards like the Platinum, Gold, and Green. The entry shows as a negative amount because it reverses a charge that posted earlier.1myFICO Forums. American Express Platinum Charge Card Cancelled
Why Amex Issued the Credit
Four situations account for almost every one of these entries. If you did any of the following recently, that’s your explanation.
You Cancelled Within 30 Days of the Annual Fee Posting
Amex charges the annual fee on the anniversary of your account opening date. An account opened on July 25, for instance, is billed the fee every July 25. Cancel within 30 days of that charge and the fee is refunded in full.2American Express. Gold Card Annual Fee That refund is the credit you’re seeing.
You Downgraded to a Lower-Fee Card
Moving from a higher-fee product to a lower-fee one, such as Platinum to Gold, also generates a credit. Within the same 30-day window, you get the full fee back. After that, Amex prorates the refund based on the portion of the year you held the higher-fee card.3NerdWallet. How to Upgrade or Downgrade an American Express Card
You Accepted a Retention Offer
If you called to cancel and Amex offered a statement credit to keep you, that credit can appear with similar “CR ADJ” formatting, though the exact descriptor varies. Retention credits typically post eight to twelve weeks after any required spending threshold is met.4Thrifty Traveler. Amex Platinum Retention Offers
You Qualified for Military Relief Under the SCRA
Active-duty servicemembers can get annual fee relief under the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act. For SCRA purposes, Amex treats annual membership fees, late fees, and returned payment fees as “interest.” You must have opened the account before entering active duty, and you apply online, by phone, by fax, or by mail with documentation such as duty orders or a DD-214. Approved relief is applied retroactively to the start of active duty and can take up to two billing cycles to show up on the account.5American Express. Service Members Civil Relief
Does the Amount Match What You Expected?
The Platinum Card annual fee is $895, up from $695. The increase took effect for existing cardholders at their first renewal on or after January 2, 2026.6American Express. Platinum Fee7CNBC. Amex Platinum Card Changes If the credit on your statement is for an older figure like $695 or $550, it reflects the fee that was in effect when the charge originally posted. If You Expected a Credit and It’s Not There
Check the timing first. Credits from product changes have been reported anywhere from a few days to several weeks after the change, and Amex representatives have cited a window of up to 49 days.8myFICO Forums. Amex Annual Fee Refund How Long If enough time has passed, call the number on the back of the card or use online chat and ask about the status of the adjustment.
If that doesn’t resolve it, you can file a billing dispute. Under federal law, you generally have 60 days from the date the statement containing the error was sent. Amex then has up to two billing cycles, not to exceed 90 days, to resolve it. You can start a dispute online through your account using the “Dispute This Charge” option on the transaction. Keep paying at least the minimum while the dispute is pending; missing a payment can result in late marks on your credit report regardless of how the dispute turns out.9American Express.
