If you see Citizens Net Setlmt on your business bank statement, it’s the daily credit card settlement deposit from Toast, the restaurant point-of-sale and payment processor. The full line usually reads “CITIZENS NET SETLMT BANKCARD SYSCC” followed by a reference number, and the funds originate from Fifth Third Bank, which sponsors Toast’s payment processing on the card networks.1Toast. Toast Billing FAQ The amount you receive is already net of Toast’s processing fees and any other deductions for that batch.
“Citizens” in the descriptor does not mean Citizens Bank or Citizens Financial Group. Toast’s merchant agreement names Fifth Third Bank as the member bank for Visa, Mastercard, Discover, and other networks, and “Citizens Net Setlmt” is simply the billing descriptor Fifth Third assigns to these settlement transfers.2U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. Why the Deposit Is Smaller Than Your Sales
Toast uses a net settlement model, meaning processing fees come out before the money hits your account rather than being billed separately later.4Stripe. Payment Settlement Explained5Helcim. Batches and Settlements For any given day, the deposit works out to credit card sales plus tips, minus processing fees, minus chargebacks, minus any other applicable charges.6Toast. Several things can pull the number further down or shift it around:
- Chargebacks from cardholder disputes, which show as individual line items in Toast’s Payouts Overview report.6Toast. My Deposits Don’t Match My Credit Card Sales
- Refunds issued during the settlement period, deducted straight from the deposit.7Toast. Bank Statements and Sales Summary Report Do Not Match

- Date grouping, since a single deposit can cover sales from more than one calendar day depending on how the batching windows fall.7Toast. Bank Statements and Sales Summary Report Do Not Match
Software, hardware, and recurring Toast service fees are not pulled from these daily deposits. Those come out through a separate monthly ACH transfer, so you won’t see them inside a Citizens Net Setlmt line.1Toast. Toast Billing FAQ
When the Deposit Should Arrive
Toast captures transactions for settlement automatically at 4:00 a.m. EST each day. Batches captured before 9:30 p.m. EST are deposited the next business day. Anything processed after that cutoff, or over a weekend, typically takes two to three business days.1Toast. Toast Billing FAQ
A single day’s sales can also split across two deposits. If you run both an afternoon and a nightly batch, or you batch manually before 9:30 p.m. and keep taking orders afterward, each window settles separately. Transactions over $5,000 or with unusually large tips can also be flagged for fraud review and held until the review clears, then rolled into the next batch.6Toast. How to Reconcile a Specific Deposit
Toast Web has three reports under Reports > Payments that let you trace exactly what went into a Citizens Net Setlmt deposit:
- The Settled Deposits Daily Breakdown shows each deposit total, the payment methods included, the processing fees deducted, and the net amount. Clicking the magnifying glass icon next to a deposit opens every individual transaction, refund, and adjustment inside it.7Toast. Bank Statements and Sales Summary Report Do Not Match
- The Payouts Overview lists all deposits and fee deductions, with chargebacks broken out separately. Selecting a deposit row reveals which sales dates are grouped into that payout.6Toast. My Deposits Don’t Match My Credit Card Sales
- Processing Statements give you the detailed credit card activity, fee calculations, and adjustments for a chosen period.1Toast. Toast Billing FAQ
When you compare the deposit against your Sales Summary, use the “Credit/Debit” total rather than the “Net Sales” figure. Net Sales already has certain fee deductions baked in and will throw off your math. If a difference still can’t be explained, Toast asks you to have the bank statement, the Payouts Overview and Settled Deposits reports, the exact discrepancy amount, and the date range ready before contacting Toast Customer Care.6Toast.
