What Is Box 7 on a W-2? Social Security Tips, Cap, and Form 4137

Box 7 on a W-2 shows the tips you reported to your employer during the year that were subject to Social Security tax. Your employer fills it in from the tip amounts you disclosed to them over the course of the year, and federal law treats those tips as Social Security wages just like regular pay.1Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 3121 Definitions – Section: Tips Included for Both Employee and Employer Taxes Box 3 (regular Social Security wages) and Box 7 together cannot exceed $184,500 for 2026, which is the Social Security wage base.2Internal Revenue Service. General Instructions for Forms W-2 and W-3 (2026)

How Box 7 Fits With the Other Wage Boxes

The same tip dollars show up in more than one place on your W-2, and the boxes are not meant to be added together. Reading them as separate income would double- or triple-count your tips.

  • Box 1 (wages, tips, other compensation) already includes your reported tips along with your regular pay. This is your total taxable income from the employer.
  • Box 3 (Social Security wages) is your non-tip pay subject to Social Security tax. Box 3 plus Box 7 is capped at $184,500 for 2026.2Internal Revenue Service. General Instructions for Forms W-2 and W-3 (2026)
  • Box 5 (Medicare wages and tips) includes both regular pay and tips, with no upper limit.3Internal Revenue Service. General Instructions for Forms W-2 and W-3 (2026)
  • Box 7 (Social Security tips) is only the reported tips, and only up to the room left under the wage base after Box 3.

The tips in Box 7 also feed into your lifetime Social Security earnings record, which is what the Social Security Administration uses to calculate retirement and disability benefits later on.

What the Wage Base Cap Does to Box 7

Social Security tax stops applying once your Social Security wages hit the annual cap. For 2026 that cap is $184,500, adjusted each year based on the national average wage index.4Social Security Administration. If your regular wages in Box 3 already reach $184,500, Box 7 will show zero because the cap is met before your tips get counted. If Box 3 is $170,000 and you reported $20,000 in tips, Box 7 will show $14,500, the remaining room under the cap. The rest of the tip income is still there in Box 1 and Box 5. It just isn’t subject to Social Security tax.

How the Tax on Box 7 Tips Gets Paid

You and your employer each owe 6.2 percent Social Security tax and 1.45 percent Medicare tax on the tip income in Box 7, matching the rates on regular wages.6Internal Revenue Service. Topic No. 751, Social Security and Medicare Withholding Rates Because your employer never actually handles your cash tips, they collect your share of FICA by taking it out of your regular paycheck.7Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 3102 Deduction of Tax From Wages – Section: Special Rule for Tips

Your employer withholds income tax and FICA on your regular wages first, then uses what’s left of that paycheck to cover the FICA due on your reported tips. If your regular pay isn’t enough to cover it all, the employer stops when the paycheck runs out. They aren’t required to pay your share out of their own pocket.8Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 3102 Deduction of Tax From Wages

Uncollected Tax and Form 4137

When your employer can’t collect the full FICA tax on your reported tips, the uncollected amount shows up in Box 12 with codes A (uncollected Social Security tax) and B (uncollected Medicare tax). You pay it yourself using Form 4137, Social Security and Medicare Tax on Unreported Tip Income, which calculates what you owe and carries the tax over to your Form 1040.9Internal Revenue Service. Box 8 Allocated Tips Are Not in Box 7

If you work at a large food or beverage establishment (generally more than 10 employees where tipping is customary) your employer may report allocated tips in Box 8. Allocation happens when the total tips reported by all employees at the establishment come in below 8 percent of gross receipts.10eCFR. 26 CFR 31.6053-3 Reporting by Certain Large Food or Beverage Establishments With Respect to Tips

Allocated tips are not included in Box 1, Box 5, or Box 7, and no taxes are withheld on them.11Internal Revenue Service. 12Internal Revenue Service. About Form W-2 C, Corrected Wage and Tax Statements

If your employer won’t fix it or you can’t reach them, you can contact the IRS, which will follow up with the employer. File your return using the figures you believe are correct and attach an explanation of the discrepancy. Copies of your monthly tip reports make these disputes much easier to resolve.

The 2025–2028 Tips Deduction Does Not Change Box 7

Starting with the 2025 tax year, a federal income tax deduction is available to eligible tipped workers on qualifying tip income. For 2026, employers will report the total cash tips you disclosed using new Code TP in Box 12, along with a Treasury Tipped Occupation Code in Box 14b.2Internal Revenue Service. General Instructions for Forms W-2 and W-3 (2026)

The deduction applies to federal income tax only. Your tips remain subject to Social Security and Medicare taxes, and Box 7 continues to report them the same way. The amount in Box 7 is unaffected.
