An Isle of Man tax identification number is called a Tax Reference Number, issued by the Income Tax Division to every individual, company, trust, partnership, and foundation with a filing obligation on the island. It follows a consistent format: one letter identifying the taxpayer type, six digits, and an optional two-digit suffix after a hyphen (for example, H123456-78 for an individual).1Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development. Isle of Man Tax Identification Number The Isle of Man is a self-governing Crown Dependency with its own tax system, entirely separate from the United Kingdom’s, so the number is issued locally and does not overlap with any UK reference.2Isle of Man Government. Format and What the Prefix Letter Means
Every Tax Reference Number begins with a letter that tells you what kind of taxpayer it belongs to. The number without its suffix is still valid; the two digits after the hyphen are optional.1Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development. Isle of Man Tax Identification Number
- H — individual taxpayer (e.g., H123456-78)
- C — company or limited liability company (e.g., C222222)
- X — trust, foundation, or partnership (e.g., X555555-55)
Individuals also have a National Insurance Number (NINO), formatted as two letters, six digits, and a suffix letter (A, B, C, or D). It is a separate identifier, though the Isle of Man tax authorities accept it as an alternative reference for individuals in some contexts.1Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development. Who Needs a Tax Reference Number
If you have a filing obligation on the island, you need one. That covers residents earning income, non-residents with island-sourced income, every locally incorporated or locally managed company, and trusts or foundations required to file returns.1Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development. Individuals Moving to the Island
If you move to the Isle of Man and earn any income, you register with the Income Tax Division and receive a Tax Reference Number. The registration form (R25) is used by employed, self-employed, and retired individuals. Even if you arrive without current income, the form asks how you plan to cover living expenses, so effectively anyone establishing residency is expected to register.3Isle of Man Government. Non-Resident Landlords
Non-residents who earn Isle of Man rental income fall inside the system as well. When the Division learns that a non-resident landlord is receiving rent from island property, it issues a notice to the tenant or letting agent directing them to withhold tax at the higher rate on future payments.4Isle of Man Government. Making Payments to Non-Residents Estate agents letting property for non-resident landlords also have their own reporting obligations to the Division.
Companies, Trusts, and Foundations
Every company incorporated on the island, or managed and controlled from within it, must register for a corporate Tax Reference Number with a C prefix. Trusts and foundations filing island tax returns are issued a number with the X prefix.5Isle of Man Government. Reference Numbers Corporate returns are filed through the Isle of Man Government’s online services portal.
How to Register as an Individual
New residents complete Form R25, which the Income Tax Division uses to open your tax record and issue your Tax Reference Number. The form asks for:3Isle of Man Government. Registration for Manx Income Tax
- Personal details, including full name, date of birth, marital status, National Insurance Number if you have one, and contact information.
- Residency information: date of arrival, whether you intend to become a permanent resident, any visits to the island in the previous five years, and your current address.
- Income details: employment status, employer name and start date, estimated annual income by source (employment, pensions, rental, investment), and any company directorships.
- Property details, including any properties you own, rental income estimates, and letting agent details.
You need to provide two forms of identification, at least one with a photo. A valid passport, driving licence, or government-issued ID card satisfies the photo requirement. Non-photo options include a utility bill dated within six months, a recent bank statement, or a recent payslip. If you have never held a National Insurance Number in the UK or Isle of Man and plan to work, you also complete Form CA5400 and Form R133.

Finding Your Existing Tax Reference Number
If you registered previously, your number is on several documents you already have:
- Any previously filed tax return or assessment notice from the Income Tax Division.
- Coding correspondence sent to your employer, including the T6 listing of employees’ codes.
- Any letter or demand from the Income Tax Division.
If none of those are to hand, the Income Tax Division advises contacting them directly.8Isle of Man Government. ITIP and Coding

What the Number Is Not
Two other identifiers are commonly mistaken for the Tax Reference Number, and the confusion causes real problems on forms.
The National Insurance Number is a separate identifier for individuals, with its own format (two letters, six digits, a suffix letter). Some Isle of Man processes accept it as an alternative reference, but it is not the same number as your Tax Reference Number, and forms that ask specifically for one will not accept the other.1Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development. A VAT number is also separate. VAT on the island is administered by Isle of Man Customs and Excise under the Value Added Tax Act 1996, which generally mirrors UK legislation as part of a customs union and common indirect tax area.10GOV.UK. VIOM01000 – Introduction Your corporate Tax Reference Number (the C-prefix number) covers income tax; a VAT number covers indirect tax on goods and services. Registering for one does not register you for the other.
How Your Number Is Used Internationally
Your Tax Reference Number is not only a domestic identifier. Under two international agreements, it is shared with foreign tax authorities, which matters for anyone with cross-border financial ties.
The Isle of Man signed an intergovernmental agreement with the United States in 2013 to implement the Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act (FATCA). Isle of Man financial institutions report account information for US persons to the Assessor of Income Tax, who forwards it to the US Internal Revenue Service.11U.S. Department of the Treasury. Agreement Between the Government of the United States of America and the Government of the Isle of Man to Improve International Tax Compliance and to Implement FATCA
The island also participates in the OECD’s Common Reporting Standard (CRS), which works similarly but covers a much wider set of countries. Financial institutions report account information in prescribed XML formats, and the Assessor exchanges the data automatically with participating jurisdictions under the Income Tax (Common Reporting Standard) Regulations 2025.12Isle of Man Government.
