The fastest way to get an IRS transcript is to sign in to your IRS Individual Online Account and use the Get Transcript Online tool, which lets you view, print, or download all five transcript types immediately at no charge.1Internal Revenue Service. Online Account and Tax Transcripts Can Help Taxpayers File a Complete and Accurate Tax Return If you can’t or would rather not verify your identity online, you can request certain transcripts by mail or phone, or submit Form 4506-T for any type. A transcript is a free summary of what the IRS has on file for you, not a photocopy of your return; if you need the actual return with attachments, that requires Form 4506 and a $30 fee per tax year.2Internal Revenue Service. Pick the Right Transcript First
The IRS offers five free transcript types, and the one you want depends on why you need it.3Internal Revenue Service. Transcript Types for Individuals and Ways to Order Them
- Tax Return Transcript. Shows most line items from your original Form 1040 as filed, with attached forms and schedules. Mortgage lenders typically ask for this one.
- Tax Account Transcript. Shows filing status, taxable income, payment types, and any changes made after your original filing, including amended return adjustments and penalty assessments.
- Record of Account Transcript. Combines the tax return transcript and the tax account transcript into a single document. Most complete picture of a given year.
- Wage and Income Transcript. Shows data from information returns third parties reported to the IRS, including W-2, 1099, 1098, and 5498 forms. Useful if you’re reconstructing a return or missing wage statements.
- Verification of Non-Filing Letter. Confirms the IRS has no record of a processed Form 1040 for a specific year. Financial aid offices sometimes require this.
A tax return transcript mirrors what you originally filed and does not reflect any later corrections. If you need to see IRS adjustments, penalty postings, or payment credits, request the tax account transcript or the record of account transcript instead.
What You Need Before You Start
To pass the IRS security check, have your Social Security number or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number, your date of birth, and the mailing address from your most recently filed return. The address has to match what the IRS has on file, or the request will be rejected.4Internal Revenue Service. Transcript Services for Individuals – FAQs For a business transcript, you’ll need the Employer Identification Number used on the filings.
Online requests add an identity verification step handled by ID.me. You’ll need a government-issued photo ID (driver’s license, state ID, or passport) and the ability to take a selfie with a smartphone or webcam. If the automated check can’t confirm you, ID.me offers a video call as a backup.5Internal Revenue Service. New Identity Verification Process to Access Certain IRS Online Tools and Services
If you’ve moved since your last return, update your address with the IRS before requesting a mailed transcript. You can file Form 8822, put the new address on your next return, or send a signed written statement to the office where you filed last.6Internal Revenue Service. Address Changes Address updates take four to six weeks to process, so plan ahead. Don’t enter your old address just to push the request through, because a mailed transcript won’t be forwarded.
The Three Ways to Request It

By Mail or Phone

Get Your Tax Records and Transcripts The tradeoff: only the tax return transcript and the tax account transcript are available this way. The other three types require online access or Form 4506-T.3Internal Revenue Service. Transcript Types for Individuals and Ways to Order Them
By Submitting Form 4506-T
Form 4506-T works for any of the five transcript types and is the only route for records older than what the online or mail methods offer. Mail or fax the completed form to the IRS service center designated for your area; the correct address and fax number appear in the form’s instructions. Paper submissions take longer to process, so allow extra time if you’re working toward a closing date or aid deadline.
How Far Back Each Transcript Goes
The look-back window varies by transcript type and by how you request it.3Internal Revenue Service. Transcript Types for Individuals and Ways to Order Them

Getting a Transcript for Someone Else
A Deceased Taxpayer
Executors and personal representatives can request a deceased person’s transcript with Form 4506-T plus proof of authority. That means a copy of the death certificate along with court-approved Letters Testamentary, or a completed Form 56 (Notice Concerning Fiduciary Relationship) with copies of any court letters.8Internal Revenue Service. A Client, if You’re a Tax Professional
Tax professionals and attorneys access client transcripts by filing Form 2848 (Power of Attorney and Declaration of Representative). The taxpayer specifies which forms and years the representative may access. Once the form is processed, the representative retrieves transcripts through the IRS e-Services Transcript Delivery System.9Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Form 2848
