What Is an EmeraldCo Charge on Your Bank Statement?

An EmeraldCo charge on your bank statement is almost always a transaction tied to H&R Block’s Emerald Prepaid Mastercard or a related tax-season product. The name belongs to Pathward, N.A., the bank that issues the Emerald Card and processes its transactions. “EmeraldCo” is the merchant descriptor Pathward uses on the payment networks, so a single label can cover fee deductions, refund deposits, ATM withdrawals, loan repayments, and more.1H&R Block. Emerald Prepaid Mastercard Services and Features By itself, it is not a sign of fraud.

Why the Name Says EmeraldCo Instead of H&R Block

H&R Block is a tax preparer, not a bank. Pathward handles the banking side of the Emerald Card and its related products, and when it moves money through the ACH or card networks the automated descriptor reads “EmeraldCo” rather than spelling out either company’s name. The same label applies whether you walked into an office, filed online, or just used the card to buy groceries.

Match the Amount to a Known Fee

Most EmeraldCo charges resolve the moment you line up the dollar amount with the card’s fee schedule, revised August 2025.2H&R Block. H&R Block Emerald Prepaid Mastercard Fee Schedule The Emerald Card has no monthly maintenance fee for normal use, and typical charges are:

  • $3.50 for an ATM withdrawal, plus whatever the ATM operator adds.
  • $1.00 for an ATM balance inquiry, again on top of any operator fee.
  • 1.5% of the amount for an over-the-counter withdrawal at a bank teller.
  • Up to $4.95 for a cash reload at a participating retailer, set by the reload provider.
  • $9.95 per month inactivity fee after 60 consecutive days with no card transactions. Paying a fee does not count as a transaction.
  • $15.00 for an expedited replacement card. A standard replacement is free.

Store purchases and cash back at checkout cost nothing from the card issuer. If the amount on your statement does not match any of these, the charge is probably tied to a Refund Transfer or an Emerald Advance loan.

If the Charge Came Out of Your Refund

A Refund Transfer lets you pay H&R Block’s tax prep fees from your refund rather than upfront. Pathward opens a temporary account, receives your refund from the government, deducts the preparation fees plus a $42 Refund Transfer fee, and forwards what is left to you.3H&R Block. Refund Transfer – Tax Refund Payment Taking the balance as a paper check costs another $25 and is only available when filing with a tax professional.

On your statement the Refund Transfer does not appear as an outgoing charge. It shows up as a smaller-than-expected deposit, and the difference carries the EmeraldCo label. If you elected this option during filing, that $42 gap is the charge you are seeing.

If You Took an Emerald Advance

The Emerald Advance is a short-term loan offered through H&R Block during tax season. For the 2026 tax season, loan amounts range from $350 to $1,500, carry an APR of 35.90%, and must be repaid in full by March 31, 2026.4H&R Block. H&R Block Emerald Advance Loan If you borrowed and later see EmeraldCo charges, those are likely loan repayments or finance charges pulled from your Emerald Card balance or refund.

Look Up the Exact Transaction

Before you call anyone, gather the specifics: the 16-digit Emerald Card number, the exact dollar amount down to the cent, and the transaction date. The MyBlock account portal and the H&R Block mobile app show each transaction with a unique transaction ID. That ID is what customer service uses to trace the origin of a charge if the amount does not match any fee you recognize.

Disputing a Charge You Didn’t Authorize

If you confirm the charge is not yours, Regulation E gives you 60 days from the date the bank sends the statement reflecting the error to report it.5Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. 12 CFR 1005.11 – Procedures for Resolving Errors Missing that window can leave you liable for unauthorized transfers that occur after it closes.6Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. 12 CFR Part 1005 – Electronic Fund Transfers (Regulation E) File by calling the number on the back of the card or through H&R Block’s website.

Once you file, the bank has 10 business days to investigate and report findings. It can extend that to 45 calendar days, but only if it issues a provisional credit for the disputed amount within the initial 10 business days.5Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. 12 CFR 1005.11 – Procedures for Resolving Errors The provisional credit is not optional when the bank takes the extension. The bank may withhold up to $50 if it has reason to believe an unauthorized transfer occurred and has met certain notification requirements. Keep your claim confirmation number and follow up if the deadline passes without word.

Stopping Recurring Inactivity Fees

The most common surprise on an Emerald Card statement is a stack of $9.95 charges. After 60 consecutive days without a transaction, the inactivity fee hits every month and keeps drawing the balance down until you use the card or close the account.2H&R Block. H&R Block Emerald Prepaid Mastercard Fee Schedule These are disclosed in the cardholder agreement, so you cannot reverse them through a dispute. You can stop them from accumulating by calling customer service to close the account and requesting the remaining balance as a check or one-time ACH transfer, which is free.
