What Is an Eligibility Code on Your EAD Card?

The eligibility code on your EAD card is a short label like C09 or A05 printed on the front of Form I-766 that identifies the exact legal basis for your work permission. Each code points to a specific paragraph of 8 CFR 274a.12, the regulation listing every class of noncitizen authorized to work in the United States.1eCFR. 8 CFR 274a.12 – Classes of Aliens Authorized to Accept Employment The code isn’t cosmetic. It controls what you file to renew, what evidence USCIS expects, what fee applies, and how your employer completes Form I-9.

Where to Find the Code

Look on the front of the card for a field labeled “Category” or “Class.” That’s your eligibility code. It should match the code you entered in Part 2, Item 27 of Form I-765 when you applied,2U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Form I-765, Instructions for Application for Employment Authorization and it should also appear on your receipt notice (Form I-797C) as “Eligibility Category” or “Class Requested.”3U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Automatic Employment Authorization Document (EAD) Extension

Compare the two when your card arrives. A mismatch between the code on the card and the code on the receipt notice can cause trouble at both employment verification and renewal, and it’s easier to catch immediately than months later.

How the Code Is Built

Every code follows the same pattern: a letter, then a two-digit number. Some student categories add a third character, like C03A, C03B, or C03C. The letter groups you by how you got your work authorization; the number identifies the specific regulatory paragraph.

“A” Codes

An “A” code means your immigration status itself includes work authorization. Refugees (A03), asylees (A05), and people granted Temporary Protected Status (A12) fall in this group.1eCFR. 8 CFR 274a.12 – Classes of Aliens Authorized to Accept Employment The card is proof of a right you already hold under your status.

“C” Codes

A “C” code means your status doesn’t automatically carry work permission. You had to file Form I-765 and wait for approval before you could accept employment.2U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Form I-765, Instructions for Application for Employment Authorization Adjustment-of-status applicants (C09), asylum applicants (C08), and F-1 students on OPT (C03) are the most common. Your authorization lasts only as long as the EAD is valid, which is why renewal timing is critical.

The Codes You’re Most Likely to Have

Dozens of codes exist, but a small number account for most cards issued. Here’s what each of the common ones actually means.

C09 — Adjustment of status applicant. You filed Form I-485 for a green card and got work authorization while your case is pending. If you’re an asylee or refugee also filing I-485, you should file under A05 or A03 instead of C09.2U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. C08 — Pending asylum applicant. You can file for an EAD 150 days after USCIS receives your asylum application, but USCIS cannot grant it until 180 days have passed. DHS has proposed extending the waiting period to 365 days; if finalized, that change would push back when asylum applicants can start work.4USCIS. C03A, C03B, C03C — F-1 student OPT. C03A is pre-completion OPT (up to 20 hours per week while school is in session). C03B is the standard 12 months of post-completion OPT. C03C is the 24-month STEM extension for graduates with a qualifying degree.5U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Employment Authorization6U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. 7.4.2 F-1 and M-1 Nonimmigrant Students

A05 — Granted asylum. Once asylum is granted, work authorization is part of the status; the card confirms authorization under 8 CFR 274a.12(a)(5).7U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. 7.3 Refugees and Asylees

A12 — Granted TPS. Use this code if TPS has been granted. The related C19 code covers people with a pending TPS application who received an EAD while awaiting a decision.8U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Temporary Protected Status and Deferred Enforced Departure

A03 — Refugee. Like asylees, refugees are authorized to work as part of their admission status.

If the Code Is Wrong

The fix depends on whose mistake it was.

Your Error on Form I-765

If you entered the wrong category on your application, USCIS will try to identify the correct one from your file. If the record isn’t clear, you’ll get a Request for Evidence letting you clarify. If eligibility still can’t be verified, USCIS denies the application.9U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Chapter 4 – Adjudication There’s no appeal from an I-765 denial, but you can file a motion to reopen or reconsider, and nothing stops you from submitting a new application if you can establish eligibility.

USCIS’s Error on Your Card

If USCIS printed the wrong code, you generally don’t pay another fee for a corrected card. For a clear typo, submit a service request through the USCIS website using the “EAD Replacement due to USCIS Error” option and mail the incorrect card to the USCIS Lee’s Summit Production Facility. Processing takes about 30 days once they receive it.10U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Immigration Documents and How to Correct, Update, or Replace Them

For more complex errors, such as a wrong validity period, send a letter to the same facility explaining the problem, along with supporting evidence and the defective card. Keep copies. If USCIS decides the error was actually yours, it will notify you to follow the standard replacement process, which usually means a new Form I-765 with the applicable fee.10U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Why the Code Matters When You Renew

Your code determines what supporting evidence USCIS expects with your renewal Form I-765. A C09 applicant has to show that the underlying I-485 is still pending; a C03C STEM OPT applicant has to document the qualifying degree and an employer enrolled in E-Verify.2U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Form I-765, Instructions for Application for Employment Authorization Fees also vary by category.

Timing changed sharply on October 30, 2025. For renewal applications filed on or after that date, there is no automatic extension. The Form I-797C receipt notice explicitly states it is not evidence of employment authorization and cannot be used with an expired EAD to prove work eligibility.11U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Interim Final Rule Published to End the Practice of Automatically Extending Certain Employment If USCIS hasn’t finished processing your renewal before your current card expires, you can’t legally work during the gap. File as early as your category allows.

If you already filed a timely renewal before October 30, 2025, an automatic extension of up to 540 days may still be running, provided your eligibility category was on the qualifying list: A03, A05, A07, A08, A10, A17, A18, C08, C09, C10, C16, C20, C22, C24, C26, C31, and A12 or C19 for TPS.12U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. 5.1 Automatic Extensions Based on a Timely Filed Application to Renew Employment Authorization The extension runs from the day after your card’s expiration date and ends at 540 days or when USCIS decides your renewal, whichever comes first.13eCFR. 8 CFR 274a.13 – Application for Employment Authorization

TPS is a separate track. Extensions for A12 and C19 holders are handled through individual Federal Register notices for each designated country and operate independently of the general rules.14U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. 5.3 Automatic EAD Extensions for Temporary Protected Status (TPS) Beneficiaries If you have TPS, look up the most recent notice for your country to find your current extension date.

Why the Code Matters at Form I-9

Your employer records the EAD on Form I-9 as a List A document, which establishes both identity and work authorization. They enter the document title, card number, and expiration date in Section 2.

If you filed your renewal before October 30, 2025 and your automatic extension is still running, your employer accepts the expired card together with the I-797C receipt notice showing a timely renewal in a matching eligibility category. The employer enters an expiration date 540 days from the card’s original “Card Expires” date and notes “EAD EXT” in the Additional Information field.12U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. 5.1 Automatic Extensions Based on a Timely Filed Application to Renew Employment Authorization The category on the card and the receipt must match, with two exceptions: TPS holders may show either A12 or C19 on either document, and employers should ignore a trailing letter “P” (as in C09P).

For renewals filed on or after October 30, 2025, the receipt notice is not evidence of work authorization and cannot be combined with an expired EAD for the I-9.11U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Interim Final Rule Published to End the Practice of Automatically Extending Certain Employment If your card expires before the new one arrives, you’ll need a different valid document to satisfy Form I-9, and your employer cannot lawfully keep employing you based on the pending renewal alone.
