To file an amended tax return, complete IRS Form 1040-X, show what changed on your original return using its three-column layout, attach any corrected schedules or forms, and submit it electronically or by mail. If you’re claiming a refund, you generally have three years from when you filed the original return or two years from when you paid the tax, whichever is later.1Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 6511 – Limitations on Credit or Refund
First, Check Whether You Actually Need to Amend
The IRS fixes some errors on its own. Arithmetic mistakes, entries taken from the wrong row of a tax table, and numbers that contradict a schedule attached to the same return are corrected automatically, and you’ll get a notice explaining the change.2Internal Revenue Service. 21.5.4 General Math Error Procedures Forgetting to attach a required form, like Form 8863 for education credits, or claiming a deduction over a clear statutory limit falls into the same bucket. No Form 1040-X needed.
File an amendment when the change actually shifts your tax or refund. Common reasons:
- Your filing status was wrong (for example, you qualified as head of household but filed as single).
- You need to add or remove a dependent.
- A W-2 or 1099 arrived after you filed, or you discovered income you left off.
- You missed a credit or deduction you were entitled to, such as the Earned Income Tax Credit or an education credit.3Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Form 1040-X
One boundary worth knowing: if you received a CP2000 notice because third-party records don’t match what you reported, and the notice is correct with nothing else to change, you respond to the notice itself instead of filing a 1040-X. If the CP2000 is correct but you also want to report other changes, file a 1040-X with “CP2000” written at the top alongside your notice response.4Internal Revenue Service. Know Your Deadline
If You’re Claiming a Refund
You have three years from when you filed the original return, including extensions, or two years from when you paid the tax, whichever falls later.1Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 6511 – Limitations on Credit or Refund Returns filed before the due date are treated as filed on the due date itself, so a 2025 return sent in February 2026 is considered filed on April 15, 2026, and the three-year clock runs from there.5Internal Revenue Service. Time You Can Claim a Credit or Refund Miss the window and the IRS cannot legally send you the money, however valid the claim.
If You Owe More Tax
There’s no deadline, but interest is already running. Interest on unpaid tax accrues from the original due date of the return, not from when you noticed the error, at the rate set under 26 U.S.C. ยง 6601, currently 7% annually and compounded daily.6Internal Revenue Service. Interest Rates Remain the Same for the First Quarter of 2026 File and pay as soon as you can.
Fill Out Form 1040-X
Wait until your original return has been fully processed before starting. The IRS specifically warns against filing an amendment before your original refund arrives; doing both at once tangles the processing.7Internal Revenue Service. Mistakes Happen – Here’s When to File an Amended Return
Form 1040-X uses three columns. Column A shows what you originally reported (or the last figure the IRS adjusted to). Column B shows the net change on each line, positive or negative. Column C shows the new, corrected amount. The IRS gives this example: if your original AGI was $21,000 and a $500 W-2 turned up later, Column A shows $21,000, Column B shows $500, and Column C shows $21,500.8Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Form 1040-X – Section: Columns A Through C Lines that didn’t change get carried straight from A to C.
The form gives you space to explain each change in your own words. Be specific but brief. “Received corrected W-2 from employer after original filing” beats “updating income.” Pull your supporting documents together first: corrected W-2s, late 1099s, receipts, or any IRS notice you’re responding to. If your changes touch other schedules or forms (Schedule A, Schedule C, Form 8812, and so on), attach the corrected versions to the 1040-X.

Will Amending Trigger an Audit?
Filing a 1040-X does not flag your original return for audit. The IRS has said an amended return doesn’t affect the selection process for the original filing.17Internal Revenue Service. IRS Audits The amendment goes through its own screening and could be reviewed on its own merits, but a refund claim by itself is not an audit trigger. The larger risk usually runs the other way: if the IRS catches an uncorrected error first, you may face penalties on top of the tax.
Handle Your State Return Too
A federal change to your income, deductions, or credits will almost always change your state tax as well. Most states require an amended state return after a federal amendment, with their own forms and deadlines. The IRS tells taxpayers to contact their state tax agency after amending a federal return, and specifically not to attach the state amendment to Form 1040-X.18Internal Revenue Service. File an Amended Return Check your state revenue department’s website for the correct form and timing; missing a state deadline can cost you a state refund or add state interest and penalties.
