What Is an Adyen Charge on Your Bank Statement?

An Adyen charge on your bank statement is a payment processed by Adyen, a global payment technology company that handles transactions for thousands of businesses. Adyen is not the merchant. It sits between the store or service you paid and your bank, which is why its name sometimes shows up on your statement instead of the retailer’s. If the charge looks unfamiliar, the first step is working out which business is actually behind it, then contacting that business directly for any refund, cancellation, or dispute.

Why Adyen’s Name Shows Up Instead of the Merchant’s

Adyen processes payments for a long list of companies, including Uber, Spotify, eBay, McDonald’s, Booking.com, Netflix, Etsy, Microsoft, LinkedIn, UNIQLO, GoFundMe, Dollar Shave Club, and EasyJet, along with many smaller online retailers and subscription services.1Adyen. Customers When you buy from any of them, Adyen routes the payment in the background. Whether your statement reads “Adyen” or the merchant’s own name depends on how that merchant configured its billing descriptor.

Adyen’s system lets merchants customize the text that appears on statements, up to 22 characters.2Adyen Docs. Transaction Description A merchant can set a trading name, include an order reference, or combine both. If the merchant hasn’t customized this, the descriptor defaults to whatever company name is registered in the Adyen account, with the city and country attached. In some cases, the word “Adyen” itself ends up in that default text.3Adyen. How to Identify the Business That Charged You

Adyen runs a lookup tool at adyen.com/why-do-i-see-adyen-on-my-bank-statement. It asks for a payment reference number (a 16-character alphanumeric code), the last four digits of the card you used, the exact amount and currency, and the transaction date.3Adyen. Why Do I See Adyen on My Bank Statement If you don’t have those details to hand, work backward from your own records: recent email receipts, app purchase histories, and the list of active subscriptions on your phone or email account will usually surface the service that triggered the charge.

Refunds and Canceling a Subscription

Adyen cannot issue a refund, cancel a subscription, or stop a recurring payment. As the payment processor, it does not have the authority to do any of those things on its own.3Adyen. Why Do I See Adyen on My Bank Statement You have to go to the merchant. The same is true for order confirmations and invoices; Adyen does not hold them.

If the merchant ignores you or refuses to help, your next step is your bank or card issuer. Banks can initiate a chargeback, which is a forced reversal of the payment. Adyen itself tells consumers to go to their bank when they cannot resolve a dispute with the merchant.3Adyen. Why Do I See Adyen on My Bank Statement

Disputing an Unauthorized Charge

If the charge is one you never authorized, your legal protections depend on where you are.

United States

The Fair Credit Billing Act caps your liability for unauthorized credit card charges at $50. To use that protection, send a written dispute to the card issuer’s billing-inquiry address within 60 days of the first statement showing the charge. The issuer has 30 days to acknowledge your complaint and 90 days to resolve it. While it investigates, you can withhold payment on the disputed amount, and the issuer cannot report it as delinquent.5Federal Trade Commission. If you did not authorize the payment, notify your bank within 13 months to claim a refund. The bank should generally process it by the next business day. For credit card purchases between £100 and £30,000, Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act makes the card issuer jointly liable with the merchant for breach of contract or misrepresentation, giving you a second route to a refund. If your bank refuses, you can take the complaint to the Financial Ombudsman Service.7Financial Conduct Authority. Fraudulent Payments

India

For transactions processed through Adyen’s Indian operations, the company says it handles reports of fraudulent or unauthorized charges “in accordance with applicable law” and follows Reserve Bank of India guidelines for reversing failed transactions within one to five business days, depending on the payment method.3Adyen. How a Chargeback Works

A chargeback is a forced refund that your bank runs through the card network. Card networks generally allow chargebacks within 120 days of the purchase, and some schemes permit up to 365 days.8Adyen. Chargebacks Common grounds include fraud, goods never delivered, items not matching what was advertised, duplicate billing, or a merchant going out of business.

Once you file, the card-issuing bank reviews the case, assigns a reason code, and pulls the funds from the merchant’s account. The merchant then has a window, typically 14 to 40 days, to submit evidence defending the charge.9Adyen Docs. Manage Disputes If the dispute goes further, it can escalate to scheme arbitration, which can take months. In the UK, you can take an unresolved claim to the Financial Ombudsman Service after eight weeks.8Adyen. Chargebacks
