What Is a Thrifty RAC Charge on Your Statement?

A “Thrifty RAC” line on your credit card statement is the final, consolidated bill for a Thrifty car rental. RAC stands for Rental Agreement Charge, and it rolls every piece of your rental into one number: the base rate, taxes, airport and government fees, any optional products you accepted, and any adjustments Thrifty made after you returned the car. Because that single figure almost never matches the daily rate you were quoted, the charge often looks wrong at first glance even when it isn’t.

Why the Charge Appears as One Lump Sum

RAC is the billing descriptor rental companies use so banks categorize the transaction as a vehicle rental rather than a generic purchase. Thrifty operates under Hertz Global Holdings alongside Dollar and Firefly, so depending on how the transaction is routed, your statement might read “Thrifty RAC,” “Thrifty Car Rental,” or something referencing Hertz’s payment processing.1U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. Hertz Global Holdings, Inc. – Exhibit 21.1 List of Subsidiaries

That single line is tied to your reservation or contract number, and your bank has no visibility into what makes it up. If you want to know what’s inside the total, you have to go to Thrifty for the itemized receipt. The statement itself will never show it.

What’s Bundled Into the Total

The gap between an advertised daily rate and the posted RAC charge is usually not one big surprise fee. It’s several smaller things stacked on top of the base rental cost.

The base rate covers the vehicle for the days you reserved it, and varies by vehicle class, pickup location, and length of rental. Everything else is added on top.

Driver-related surcharges run per day for the full rental:

  • A young renter fee applies to anyone under 25. Thrifty rents to drivers as young as 20 in most states, and 18 in New York and Michigan, but the under-25 surcharge is charged daily.2Thrifty. Car Rental Under 25
  • Each additional authorized driver added to the contract adds a per-person, per-day fee.3Thrifty. Additional Drivers
  • Returning the vehicle to a different location than pickup triggers a one-way drop fee, with the amount depending on the route.4Thrifty. One Way Car Rentals
  • A Vehicle Licensing Cost Recovery fee is charged daily to cover the company’s registration costs for the car.5Thrifty. Billing and Fees

Then come taxes and airport charges. Rental cars attract a heavier tax load than most retail transactions, including sales tax, tourism taxes, and local surcharges that depend entirely on the pickup location. Airport pickups add a concession recovery fee, which is the rental company’s cost of operating at the airport passed through to you.6Dollar Rent A Car. Optional products are usually the biggest single swing. If you accepted a Loss Damage Waiver at the counter, that alone typically runs $30 to $40 per day. Personal Accident Insurance, Supplemental Liability Insurance, child safety seats, and GPS units each carry daily fees that compound across the rental. None of these appear separately on your bank statement. They all live inside the one RAC total.

Charges That Hit After You Return the Car

Some of the most startling items in a RAC charge are not from the rental itself but from Thrifty’s post-return assessment of the vehicle.

Fuel is the common one. If you returned the car without a full tank and didn’t prepay for fuel, Thrifty charges a per-gallon refueling rate well above local pump prices. If you returned the car late, a 29-minute grace period applies, after which hourly surcharges kick in up to roughly 90 minutes, and beyond that you’re billed for a full additional day.7Thrifty. Early or Late

Smoking in the vehicle triggers a flat $400 cleaning fee, because de-smoking takes the car out of service for up to 24 hours.8Thrifty. Rental Policies Charges for excessive dirt, sand, or pet hair can also be added.

Electronic tolls are their own category and often post weeks after you’ve returned the car. Thrifty uses PlatePass to bill tolls automatically. If you opted in, tolls are billed at the standard rate with a daily administrative fee. If you didn’t opt in but drove through electronic toll lanes anyway, you’re charged the toll at the highest undiscounted rate plus an administrative fee. New York City congestion pricing is billed separately with a $5 per day administrative fee for entries into the congestion zone.9Thrifty. PlatePass All-Inclusive Tolling If a Thrifty charge appears on your statement well after the trip ended, tolls are the most likely explanation.

If the Charge Looks Like Two Charges

At pickup, Thrifty places a temporary authorization hold on your card that’s larger than the estimated rental cost. On a credit card, the hold covers estimated charges plus up to $200 for incidentals. On a debit card, that incidental buffer rises to $500.10Thrifty. Car Rental Debit Card Policy

When you return the vehicle, the hold doesn’t drop off right away. It typically takes up to 24 hours for Thrifty to release it, and then another 2 to 10 business days for your bank to free up the funds. Debit card holds can take longer. During that window you may see both the original hold and the final RAC charge on your account, which looks like a double charge but resolves on its own. The final RAC charge replaces the hold once processing completes.

Pulling the Itemized Receipt

To see exactly what makes up the RAC total, use Thrifty’s online receipt tool, which lets you search by driver’s license or credit card number. Receipts become available up to seven days after you return the car and stay accessible online for six months.11Thrifty. Request a Receipt

The receipt breaks out the base rate, each tax and fee, every optional product, fuel charges, and any post-return adjustments. If you think the total is wrong, this document is the only way to figure out which specific component is off, and you need it before contacting anyone about the charge.

Disputing a Charge You Didn’t Authorize

If the itemized receipt shows a charge that shouldn’t be there, or an amount that doesn’t match your rental agreement, you have two options and can use both.

Start with Thrifty directly. Customer care is at 1-800-334-1705, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET, and written inquiries can be submitted through the contact form on their website.12Thrifty. Contact Us Have your rental agreement number, the itemized receipt, and any supporting documentation ready. Disputes that commonly succeed include fuel charges when you have a gas station receipt from the day of return, damage charges for wear you documented at pickup, and optional products that were added to the contract after you declined them.

You can also file a billing error dispute with your credit card issuer under the Fair Credit Billing Act. The law gives you 60 days from the date the charge first appeared on your statement to send a written dispute to the card company.13Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1666 – Correction of Billing Errors That deadline is firm. If Thrifty is slow to respond and the 60 days are running out, file with your card issuer anyway. The issuer must acknowledge the dispute within 30 days and resolve its investigation within two billing cycles. Debit card disputes operate under different rules with weaker consumer protections, which is one reason credit cards are generally the safer payment method for car rentals.
