A tax transcript is a free summary of your federal tax return or account information, generated by the IRS from its own records. You can request one online for an immediate download, by mail or automated phone for a paper copy, or by submitting Form 4506-T.1IRS. Transcript Types and Ways to Order Them
What a Transcript Actually Is
A transcript is not a photocopy of the return you filed. It’s a condensed version of that information, pulled directly from IRS systems and formatted in a way lenders, schools, and other agencies recognize as verified data.1IRS. Transcript Types and Ways to Order Them Depending on the type, it can show most line items from your return, your Adjusted Gross Income, taxable income, payment history, and any adjustments made after filing.2IRS. IRS Form 4506-T
Transcripts are free. If you need a literal copy of the return you filed, that’s a separate request on Form 4506, costs $30 per return, and can take up to 75 calendar days.
Transcripts partially mask personally identifiable information such as Social Security Numbers while leaving the financial entries visible. If you’re preparing or filing a return and need unmasked wage and income data, the IRS will provide an unmasked Wage and Income transcript for that specific purpose.
The Five Types of Transcripts
The IRS issues five transcript types, and the right one depends on what you’re trying to prove.1IRS. Transcript Types and Ways to Order Them
- Tax Return Transcript — most line items from your original return as filed. Available for the current and three prior tax years.
- Tax Account Transcript — basic data such as marital status, AGI, and any changes made after filing. Available for the current and nine prior years through an online account.
- Record of Account — combines the return and account transcripts. Available for the current and three prior years.
- Wage and Income Transcript — data from W-2s, 1099s, and similar information returns. Available for the current and nine prior years, though the IRS notes additional limitations may apply.
- Verification of Non-filing Letter — proof that the IRS has no record of a processed return for a given year. Often required for federal student aid. It does not state whether you were required to file.
