A Final Fantasy XIV Subscription
The most common recurring Square Enix charge is a Final Fantasy XIV subscription. A Crysta Purchase
Crysta is Square Enix’s virtual currency, used to pay for subscriptions, in-game items, and services in Final Fantasy XIV and Final Fantasy XI.3Square Enix. A Store or Pre-Order Purchase
One-time charges also come from the Square Enix Store and the Final Fantasy XIV Online Store. Pre-orders are the ones most likely to surprise you: since February 2015, Square Enix processes pre-order payment ten working days before release, with a reminder email five days before the charge.5Square Enix. A Small Authorization Hold
When a new credit or debit card is added to a Square Enix account, the system places a small pre-authorization hold, often around $1.00, to verify the card. Why the Amount or Merchant Name Might Look Wrong
Sales Tax Added in 2024
Starting June 25, 2024, Square Enix began collecting applicable state and local sales tax on transactions through the Final Fantasy XIV Online Store, Mog Station, and recurring subscriptions in North America.8Square Enix. Sales Tax on FFXIV Transactions A subscription that previously billed at exactly $14.99 will now show as $14.99 plus tax in most states, which is why the amount can look off by a dollar or two. A Different Merchant Name After the Processor Change
Square Enix switched payment processors for the Mog Station and Online Store on April 23, 2024.11Square Enix. Payment Processor Transition Notice After the switch, the company acknowledged that “credit card charges may appear differently on bank statements,” and that banks might flag new purchases for extra fraud verification.12Square Enix. Someone Else in the Household
If your card is stored on a Square Enix account that someone else in your home uses, their subscription or purchase will land on your statement. How To Identify the Exact Charge
Log into the Square Enix Account Management System to check transaction records. The Online Store has a “Your Account” page with full purchase history showing dates, items, payment methods, and amounts. How To Stop Future Charges
To keep a Final Fantasy XIV subscription from renewing, log into the Mog Station, go to “Your Account” or “Manage Service Options,” and select “Cancel Subscription.” The game stays playable until the current billing period ends, after which the status flips to “Inactive.”2Square Enix. Some players use Crysta instead of a direct card payment as a safeguard. If the Crysta balance is too low when renewal is due, the system simply fails to renew and sends a notification email rather than charging the card on file.15Square Enix Forums. Charged After Cancellation Discussion
Getting a Refund
Square Enix’s general position is that accepted orders are final and non-refundable, with limited exceptions.16Square Enix. Digital products, including games, DLC, and in-game items, are not eligible for return once they’ve been redeemed, downloaded, or accessed.17Square Enix. For subscription payments, Square Enix support has stated it is “unable to refund a subscription charge once it has been processed.”15Square Enix Forums. If You Think the Charge Is Unauthorized
If you suspect someone else got into your account, secure it first. Reset your password, update your email and security questions, and enable a security token for two-factor authentication. Square Enix offers a free software authenticator for Android and iOS. Square Enix may investigate and restore lost game data on compromised accounts, but the support page does not guarantee financial refunds for fraudulent charges.19Square Enix. Under the user agreement, charges are generally non-refundable unless external criminal activity is involved or a refund is required by applicable law. To request a refund for an accidental or unauthorized charge, contact the Square Enix Support Centre.13Square Enix. Square Enix User Agreement
Think Twice Before Filing a Chargeback
Filing a chargeback with your bank against a Square Enix charge results in the associated account being suspended until the outstanding balance is repaid. The same applies to failed payments. If a recurring charge bounces, the account goes into arrears and access is locked until the balance is settled.
