What Is a Series 26 License? Exam, Eligibility, and Renewal

The Series 26 license is a FINRA principal registration that lets you supervise the sale of mutual funds, variable annuities, variable life insurance, closed-end funds in their initial offering, and unit investment trusts at a broker-dealer.1FINRA. Series 26 – Investment Company and Variable Contracts Products Principal Exam To earn it, you pass a 110-question exam with a score of at least 70%, already hold an active Series 6 or Series 7 along with the Securities Industry Essentials (SIE) exam, and are sponsored by a FINRA-member firm.2FINRA. What the License Lets You Supervise

The formal title is Investment Company and Variable Contracts Products Principal. In practice, holding a Series 26 means you can oversee solicitation, purchase, and sale of investment company products and variable contracts, review advertising and client communications for compliance with FINRA Rule 2210, monitor whether sales representatives meet suitability obligations, and approve new customer accounts.2FINRA. Investment Company and Variable Contracts Products Principal Qualification Examination (Series 26) Content Outline Series 26 principals typically work as branch managers or compliance officers at firms focused on mutual fund and insurance product sales, and the role can extend to back-office operations and financial reporting for those product lines.

The license has clear limits. It does not authorize you to supervise trading in individual stocks, corporate bonds, municipal securities, options, or direct participation programs. Professionals who need to oversee those broader asset classes pursue the Series 24 (General Securities Principal) instead.

Who Can Sit for the Exam

You cannot register for the Series 26 on your own. FINRA requires two things before you qualify as a principal, plus sponsorship.3FINRA. Co-requisites for Qualification Exams

You also need to be associated with and sponsored by a FINRA-member firm. The firm confirms it intends to place you in a supervisory capacity and that your registration is in good standing. Independent individuals and unaffiliated professionals cannot sit for the exam.

Exam Format, Content, and Cost

The Series 26 is a computer-based exam of 110 scored multiple-choice questions, with 10 unscored pretest questions mixed in. You have 2 hours and 45 minutes to complete all 120 items, and you need 70% on the scored questions to pass.2FINRA. Questions are organized around three job functions:1FINRA. Series 26 – Investment Company and Variable Contracts Products Principal Exam

  • Supervision of associated persons and sales practices: 49 questions. This covers oversight of representatives, review of customer communications, suitability, and account handling, and is the largest section.
  • Compliance and business processes: 45 questions. This covers net capital, recordkeeping, and regulatory reporting for the broker-dealer and its offices.
  • Personnel management and broker-dealer registration: 16 questions. This covers administrative duties of a principal, including registering the firm and its personnel.

Because supervision of sales practices is nearly half the exam, preparation that concentrates on suitability rules, customer disclosures, and advertising review tends to pay off most.

Registering and Scheduling

Registration begins when your firm files Form U4 (the Uniform Application for Securities Industry Registration or Transfer) through FINRA’s Central Registration Depository, the CRD system.4FINRA.org. How to Register With FINRA Form U4 asks for a minimum of ten years of employment history and at least five years of residential history, with no gaps longer than three months, along with disclosure of criminal convictions, civil judgments, financial events, and regulatory actions.5FINRA.org. Individual Form Filing – Form U4 Accuracy matters: if FINRA later finds omissions or misleading entries, it can take regulatory action against you and your firm, up to statutory disqualification from the industry.

You also submit fingerprints for an FBI background check. Electronic submission runs $30 ($20 to FINRA, $10 to the FBI); a third-party collection vendor may add its own fee.6FINRA.org. Fingerprint Fees

Once enrolled, you have a 120-day window to take the exam. If it expires, your enrollment closes and you need to re-enroll. Scheduling runs through Prometric, FINRA’s test delivery vendor, either online or by calling (800) 578-6273. You will need your name and FINRA ID (your CRD number or an assigned temporary ID).7FINRA. Schedule an Exam Bring valid government-issued photo ID on test day. You get an unofficial pass-or-fail result immediately after finishing.

If You Fail

A first or second failure triggers a 30-day waiting period before you can retake the exam. After three or more consecutive failures, the wait grows to 180 calendar days from your most recent attempt.8FINRA.org. Prepare for Your Online Test Appointment Each retake costs another $200.1FINRA. Series 26 – Investment Company and Variable Contracts Products Principal Exam There is no cap on total attempts.

Keeping the License Active

The Series 26 carries continuing education obligations in two parts.

  • Regulatory Element. An annual online training program you must complete by December 31 for each registration you hold. FINRA publishes the next year’s topics by October 1. Miss the deadline and your registration goes inactive, meaning you cannot perform licensed activities or receive compensation for them.9FINRA.org. Continuing Education (CE)
  • Firm Element. Your firm builds an annual training plan around its business and its people, and you participate in whatever programs it assigns. Supervisory training is commonly part of the plan for principals.10FINRA.org. FINRA Rule 1240 – Continuing Education

If your registration stays inactive for two years because of missed continuing education, FINRA administratively terminates it, and you have to re-qualify by passing the exam again.11FINRA.org. Maintaining Your Registration The same two-year clock generally applies if you leave the securities industry: your qualifications expire, and you retake the exams to come back into a supervisory role.
