What Is a Rocket Savings Deposit on Your Bank Statement?

A “Rocket Savings” deposit on your bank statement is an automated ACH transfer initiated by Rocket Money, a personal finance app that pulls small amounts from your checking account and moves them into a linked savings goal. It is not fraud. The transfer only happens because someone with access to your bank login connected the account to Rocket Money and turned on its Smart Savings feature. If you don’t remember doing that yourself, a household member with access may have set it up, or you may have enabled it during signup without realizing what it did.

Who Rocket Money Is

Rocket Money is the app formerly known as Truebill. It is owned by Rocket Companies, the same parent behind Rocket Mortgage and Rocket Loans, and trades publicly under the ticker RKT. The app tracks spending, monitors subscriptions, and runs an automated savings feature called Financial Goals. That savings feature is what shows up on your bank statement.

Why the Charge Is Appearing

The most common source of the entry is Smart Savings. Once you connect a checking account and turn the feature on, the app watches your balance, deposits, and spending, then pulls small amounts every few days at moments calculated to avoid an overdraft. When you set it up, you pick how aggressive the transfers should be:

  • Comfy: smaller, conservative transfers that keep your checking balance stable.
  • Moderate: a middle ground between saving speed and checking cushion.
  • Aggressive: larger, more frequent transfers aimed at reaching goals faster.

There is also a Custom Savings option where you set a monthly target, and Rocket Money breaks it into small, frequent pulls instead of one lump sum. Every one of these moves is processed as an ACH debit, the same electronic transfer system used for direct deposits and bill pay.1Nacha. How ACH Payments Work

One detail that surprises people: Smart Savings is a Premium feature and is not available on the free version of the app.2Rocket Money Help Center. Premium Membership Features If Smart Savings transfers are hitting your statement, someone signed up for Premium on the account tied to your bank. You may also see a separate recurring charge for that subscription, which runs between $7 and $14 per month depending on plan.

The descriptor on your ledger is usually “Rocket Money Smart Savings – Transfers” or a shortened form like “Rocket Savings,” sometimes followed by a transaction code or date.3Rocket Money Help Center. Why Is Rocket Money Charging Me

Where the Money Actually Went

The transferred money is not sitting inside the app. It is held in a custodial account at NBKC Bank, an FDIC-insured institution that provides the underlying banking services for Rocket Money.4Rocket Money. Your bank statement only shows the money leaving. To see the balance that accumulated on the other side, open the Rocket Money app or sign in on the website and look at the Financial Goals dashboard.

How to Stop the Transfers

If you have access to the app, open Financial Goals, pick the goal that is pulling money, and pause or close it. Closing the goal sends the remaining balance back to the original checking account within one to two business days.6Rocket Money Help Center. Closing a Financial Goal You cannot close a goal while a transfer is still pending; wait three to five business days for it to settle. Stopping Smart Savings does not by itself cancel Premium, so if you also want the monthly subscription charge to end, cancel that separately in the app.

If you can’t log in, or the app has been deleted, you have a separate right to stop the transfers through your bank. Federal law lets you halt any preauthorized electronic fund transfer by notifying your bank at least three business days before the next scheduled payment. The notice can be oral or written, though your bank may require written confirmation within 14 days of a phone request.7Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1693e – Preauthorized Transfers The CFPB confirms this right applies even to payments you previously authorized.8Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Check Before You Dispute It as Fraud

Reporting the charge as fraud is the wrong first move if it turns out you or a household member set it up. Before calling your bank, do three things. Ask anyone else with access to the checking account whether they connected it to Rocket Money. Search your email for messages from Truebill or Rocket Money, since you may have opened an account under the old name and forgotten. Check your phone’s app store purchase history for a Rocket Money install.

This matters because your bank investigates fraud claims by contacting the originating company. If Rocket Money produces a signup record and a linked account, the dispute gets denied, and repeated frivolous disputes can strain your standing with the bank. When the transfers are coming from an account you or your household controls, the faster fix is to close the goal and cancel Premium from inside the app.

If nobody in your household set this up, that is a genuine unauthorized ACH debit. Contact your bank promptly. Federal law protects you against unauthorized electronic transfers when you report them in time, and your bank can initiate the return through the ACH network.
