A Money Transfer Control Number, or MTCN, is the 10-digit tracking code Western Union assigns to every money transfer the moment the transaction goes through. Both the sender and the recipient use it: the sender to follow the transfer’s progress, the recipient to collect the funds at the other end. Without it, the money cannot be picked up.1Western Union. What is a MTCN
What the Number Looks Like
Every MTCN is exactly 10 digits. No letters, no special characters, and no two transfers share one. That uniqueness is what lets Western Union pull a single transaction out of the millions it processes each day. If someone hands you a tracking number that doesn’t fit this format, it either isn’t from Western Union or was copied down wrong.1Western Union. What is a MTCN
One boundary worth flagging: MoneyGram, the other major wire transfer service, uses something it calls a “reference number.” It isn’t an MTCN, and the two systems don’t talk to each other.
Where to Find Your MTCN
Where the number shows up depends on how you sent the money.
- Sent in person at an agent location: the MTCN is printed on the paper receipt the agent gives you.
- Sent online: it appears on the confirmation page right after the transfer is approved, and Western Union emails it to you as well.
- Sent through the app: same as online. It’s on the confirmation screen and saved in your transaction history.
If you have a Western Union account, every transfer, including ones started in person, is stored in your transaction history. You can log in and pull up the MTCN anytime.1Western Union. What is a MTCN
If You Lose the Receipt
Losing the paper receipt doesn’t mean the transfer is gone. If it was sent through your online account or the app, the MTCN is still in your transaction history. If it was an in-person transfer without an account, call Western Union customer care with your name, the recipient’s name, and the approximate amount and date. They can look the number up from those details. This is the main reason it’s worth setting up a free account even when you plan to send cash in person.
Tracking a Transfer
Once you have the MTCN, enter it into the tracking tool on Western Union’s website or app to see the status of the transfer. The sender can also pass the MTCN to the recipient so they know when the funds are ready.1Western Union. What is a MTCN
If the status shows “on hold,” there are a couple of common reasons. The transfer may still be processing if it has been less than 30 to 40 minutes since you sent it. In other cases, Western Union needs to verify the sender’s identity before releasing the funds and will email you asking you to call in. Once the verification clears, the transfer completes and the recipient can pick up the money.2Western Union. Track a Transfer – Frequently Asked Questions
Picking Up the Money
To collect a cash transfer at an agent location, the recipient needs to bring:
- The 10-digit MTCN
- Both the sender’s and recipient’s full names
- The expected transfer amount
- A government-issued photo ID
Some locations also ask for the sender’s country, state, or city. The agent checks the MTCN in the system and matches it against the recipient’s ID before paying out. One wrong digit will block the payout, so double-check the number before heading in.3Western Union. What do I need to pick up my money transfer
Fixing or Canceling a Transfer
The MTCN is also what ties any correction or cancellation back to the original transaction.
Correcting the Recipient’s Name
Only the sender can request a name change on an active transfer. You fill out Western Union’s Receiver’s Name Change Request Form with the MTCN, your ID details, the original recipient name, and the corrected name. The corrected name has to match the recipient’s actual government-issued ID, and Western Union can deny the change under its internal policies.4Western Union. Receiver’s Name Change Request Form
Canceling the Transfer
You can cancel and request a refund only if the recipient has not already picked up the money. For transfers sent to a bank account, cancellation is possible only if the receiving bank hasn’t completed the deposit. To cancel, call customer care or go back to the agent location where you sent the money. Refunds generally take up to 10 business days. How much comes back, including whether any part of the fee is refunded, depends on the service you used and the reason for canceling.5Western Union. Frequently Asked Questions
Once the recipient picks up the cash, the transaction is essentially final.
How Long an MTCN Stays Valid
Western Union holds funds for pickup for 90 days from the transfer date. If the recipient doesn’t collect within that window, the transfer expires and the money is no longer available at agent locations.6Western Union. How Long Does Western Union Hold Funds?
An expired transfer isn’t necessarily lost. The sender or recipient can contact customer care to renew it, which makes the funds available for pickup again. If nobody acts, state unclaimed property law takes over. Each state has its own dormancy period, usually between one and five years. Once it runs out with no claim, Western Union has to turn the funds over to the state as abandoned property, and you’d then recover the money by filing a claim through that state’s unclaimed property program.7Western Union. Keeping the Number Safe
The MTCN is the key to the money. Anyone who has the tracking number and the recipient’s name can potentially walk into an agent location and collect the funds, and once a pickup happens, Western Union generally cannot give you a refund.8Western Union. Fraud Resource Center
That’s why wire transfers are a favorite of scammers. Common schemes include fake online purchases where the seller disappears after pickup, romance scams asking for money from someone you’ve never met in person, emergency calls from a supposed relative in trouble, and advance-fee frauds promising a prize or loan if you pay upfront. The pattern is always the same: create urgency, get you to wire money, collect it, vanish.
A few habits will protect you:
- Share the MTCN only with the person you’re sending the money to, and send it through a private channel like a phone call or encrypted message. Not social media. Not a public forum.
- Don’t wire money to anyone you haven’t met in person. No legitimate business or government agency asks to be paid by Western Union transfer.
- Treat pressure to act fast as a warning sign. Scammers push urgency to shut down second thoughts.
- Don’t use a wire transfer to pay for an online purchase. Unlike a credit card, it offers no buyer protection once the money is collected.
If You’ve Been Scammed
Move quickly. If the transfer hasn’t been picked up yet, call Western Union customer care immediately to cancel and request a full refund. If it has already been collected, file a fraud claim through Western Union’s fraud reporting portal online or call the fraud hotline at 1-720-945-9351. The fraud team will review the claim; a refund may be possible depending on the status of the transfer, though the odds drop sharply once the money leaves the system.8Western Union. Also report the scam to the Federal Trade Commission at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. The FTC has run a separate refund program for people tricked into wiring money through Western Union between 2004 and 2017, funded by a 2017 settlement with the company.9Federal Trade Commission. Western Union Refunds
