Why the Amount May Not Match What You Spent
The most common reason a Kwik Star charge looks off is a pre-authorization hold at the pump. When you pay at the pump with a credit or debit card, the station places a temporary hold before you begin fueling, because the final total isn’t known yet. Visa’s standard pre-authorization level for pay-at-the-pump has been $175 since May 2022, though not every station holds the full amount.6Olympia Federal Savings. Visa Changes Card Limits at the Gas Pump That hold can stay on the statement for 48 to 72 hours before the bank replaces it with the actual purchase total.7AARP. Credit Card Pre-Authorization Holds at Gas Stations
Prepaying inside works a little differently. Kwik Trip’s system may authorize an additional $1.00 above the prepaid amount as a temporary hold. According to the company’s response to a Better Business Bureau complaint, that hold should be replaced by the final amount within about two hours, and Kwik Trip does not keep the extra dollar.8Better Business Bureau. Kwik Trip BBB Complaints Running a debit card with a PIN tends to clear holds almost immediately; running the same debit card as a credit transaction can leave the hold in place for the full 48-to-72-hour window.9Connecticut General Assembly. If the Charge Still Looks Wrong
Check first whether the charge is still listed as “pending.” Pending charges are usually pre-authorization holds that will settle to the correct amount once the transaction fully processes. Wait two to three days and watch for the amount to change.
If it has posted as completed and the amount is still wrong, or you don’t recognize the transaction at all, contact Kwik Trip customer support at 1-877-594-5874 and reference the store number from your statement.2Brex. If the merchant can’t resolve it, take the dispute to your bank or card issuer. For debit card transactions, federal law under Regulation E requires your bank to investigate promptly once you report an error. The bank cannot require you to work it out with the merchant first, and it cannot demand a police report before opening an investigation.10Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Electronic Fund Transfers FAQs You have 60 days from the date the statement containing the charge was sent to notify your bank. If the bank finds an error, it must correct the charge within one business day. If it needs more time, it must issue provisional credit so you can access the disputed funds during the investigation.11Federal Reserve Consumer Compliance Outlook. Error Resolution and Liability Limitations Under Regulations E and Z For credit card transactions, your issuer handles disputes under Regulation Z, and liability for unauthorized charges is generally capped at $50, though most major issuers waive even that.
Liability if the Charge Is Unauthorized
If someone used your debit card information without authorization, whether through skimming at a pump or another form of fraud, Regulation E caps your liability based on how quickly you report:
- Within 2 business days of learning about the loss: maximum liability of $50.
- After 2 business days but within 60 days of your statement: maximum liability of $500.
- After 60 days: you could be responsible for the full amount of unauthorized transfers the bank can show would have been prevented by timely reporting.
When the card number is stolen but the physical card is not lost, and you report within 60 days, your liability for unauthorized charges is zero.12FDIC. FDIC Consumer News The Federal Trade Commission recommends checking gas pump terminals for signs of tampering, such as broken security seals or loose card readers, before inserting a card, since skimming devices are a known risk at fuel pumps.13Federal Trade Commission.
