A good credit history is a consistent record of paying debts on time and keeping balances low, and in numeric terms it shows up as a FICO score of 670 or higher on the 300 to 850 scale. The average American FICO score is 715 as of late 2025, which falls inside that “good” tier. Your history is compiled by the three major bureaus, Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion, from data your creditors report, and it is judged against five specific factors that each carry a fixed weight in your score.
Where “Good” Sits on the Score Scale
FICO divides its 300 to 850 scale into five tiers:1myFICO. What Is a FICO Score
- Exceptional: 800–850
- Very good: 740–799
- Good: 670–739
- Fair: 580–669
- Poor: 300–579
VantageScore, the other major model, uses different labels; its “prime” tier runs 661 to 780 and lenders tend to treat prime borrowers much like FICO’s “good” group. For most lending decisions, FICO remains dominant.
The practical difference between tiers shows up in interest rates. On a 30-year fixed mortgage in early 2026, a borrower with a FICO of 840 averaged 6.20%, while a borrower at 620 averaged 7.17%.2Experian. Average Mortgage Rates by Credit Score A roughly one-point gap translates to tens of thousands of dollars over the life of the loan. The 740 mark is where the best pricing typically starts, though each lender sets its own cutoffs.1myFICO. What Is a FICO Score
What Actually Builds a Good History
FICO scores break down into five categories with fixed weights:3myFICO. How Are FICO Scores Calculated
- Payment history: 35%
- Amounts owed: 30%
- Length of credit history: 15%
- New credit: 10%
- Credit mix: 10%
The first two factors drive nearly two-thirds of the score. Someone with a short history but flawless payments and low balances will usually outscore someone with decades of credit who runs high balances or has missed payments.
Payment History
A clean payment record means every bill was paid before it was 30 days past due. Creditors do not report a payment as late to the bureaus until it hits that 30-day mark, so paying a few days after the due date may bring a fee from your lender without showing up on your credit report.4Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. How Long Does It Take to Repair an Error on a Credit Report
Once a payment crosses 30 days, the damage gets worse at 60, 90, and 120 days. A late payment stays on your report for seven years from the date you first missed it, though its weight on your score fades over time.5Experian. Can One 30-Day Late Payment Hurt Your Credit Mortgages generally include a 15-day grace period before a late fee of 3% to 6% kicks in, but the 30-day reporting rule still governs your credit file.
Amounts Owed and Credit Utilization
Credit utilization is your total revolving balances divided by your total credit limits. If you carry $2,500 across cards with $10,000 in combined limits, your utilization is 25%. The commonly cited threshold for avoiding a pronounced hit is 30%, and people with the highest scores tend to stay in the single digits.6Experian. What Is a Credit Utilization Rate
Utilization has no memory. Unlike a late payment that lingers for seven years, the ratio resets every time your card issuer reports a new balance, which usually happens once per billing cycle. This is also why closing an unused card can backfire: if you carry $2,000 across your cards and close an account with a $3,000 limit, your available credit drops and your ratio jumps. Closing a zero-balance card with a $3,000 limit could push utilization from 30% to 57% overnight without spending another dollar.7myFICO. Will Closing a Credit Card Help My FICO Score If an old card has no annual fee, keeping it open with a zero balance is usually the better move.
Length, Mix, and New Credit
Account age looks at your oldest account, the average age of all accounts, and how long since you used certain accounts. Older accounts give the model more data and generally help. Credit mix rewards handling both revolving accounts (like cards) and installment accounts (like a car loan or mortgage), though at 10% of the score it rarely justifies taking on debt you do not need.
New credit shows up mainly through hard inquiries. A hard inquiry occurs when a lender pulls your report to decide on an application, stays on your file for two years, and typically stops affecting your score after one. Soft inquiries, including checking your own credit, pre-approved offers, and employer background checks, do not touch your score. When shopping for a mortgage or auto loan, multiple hard inquiries for the same loan type within a 45-day window count as a single inquiry.8Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. What Keeps a History From Being Good
The most damaging items are collections, charge-offs, and bankruptcies. Federal law caps how long each can stay on your file. Chapter 7 bankruptcies remain for 10 years from the filing date; Chapter 13 bankruptcies drop off after seven years. Accounts in collections, charged-off debts, and most other negative items also fall off after seven years.9Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1681c – Requirements Relating to Information Contained in Consumer Reports
A good credit history generally means none of these items are present. If one is, its effect weakens each year, and lenders tend to weigh recent behavior more heavily than older derogatory marks.
Checking Your Credit Reports for Free
Federal law entitles you to a free credit report from each of the three bureaus every 12 months through AnnualCreditReport.com.10Annual Credit Report.com. Your Rights to Your Free Annual Credit Reports The bureaus have also permanently extended a program that lets you pull each report once per week at no cost through the same site.11Consumer Advice – FTC. Free Credit Reports Equifax is offering six additional free reports per year through 2026.
Pulling your own report is a soft inquiry and will not affect your score. Review each bureau separately. Creditors do not always report to all three, so an error can appear on one report but not the others. Look for accounts you do not recognize, balances that seem wrong, and late payments you believe were paid on time.
Disputing Errors on Your Report
If something is wrong, file a dispute directly with the bureau. Gather what supports your position: the report with the error marked, bank statements or cleared checks showing on-time payment, and identification documents if the error involves your personal information.12Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Disputing Errors on Your Credit Reports You can submit online, by phone, or by mail; keep originals and send copies.
The bureau generally has 30 days to investigate. The window extends to 45 days if you filed after requesting your free annual report, and the bureau gets 15 additional days if you add documentation during the review. After the investigation, the bureau must notify you of the result within five business days, and if an error is confirmed it must correct the file and send you an updated report at no charge.4Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Protecting a Good Credit History
Keeping a clean file means preventing unauthorized accounts from appearing on it. A credit freeze blocks any new creditor from accessing your report, which stops identity thieves from opening accounts in your name. All three bureaus must place and remove freezes for free, and they must act within one business day of an electronic or phone request.13Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1681c-1 – Identity Theft Prevention; Fraud Alerts When you apply for credit yourself, you lift the freeze, apply, and put it back.
A fraud alert is lighter. Rather than blocking access, it tells lenders to verify your identity before opening new credit, and existing accounts and pre-approved offers continue normally.14Consumer Advice – FTC. Credit Freezes and Fraud Alerts An initial fraud alert lasts one year, and contacting one bureau is enough; that bureau must notify the other two. If you are not actively applying for credit, a freeze is the stronger protection and costs nothing to maintain.
