A Fiserv charge on your merchant statement is a payment processing fee from Fiserv, the acquiring bank and processor behind the First Data and Clover brands. It bundles three things: interchange fees the card networks charge issuing banks, pass-through assessments from Visa, Mastercard, Discover, and American Express, and Fiserv’s own service charges layered on top. Interchange and network assessments make up the “large majority of the overall merchant discount rate” and are, in Fiserv’s words, “primarily non-negotiable for merchants.”1Fiserv. Rates and Fees Fiserv’s piece is the part you can actually push on.
What the Three Layers Are
Interchange is paid by Fiserv to the bank that issued your customer’s card every time that card is used. Rates are set by the networks and vary with the card type, your merchant category code, and whether the transaction was swiped, tapped, keyed, or taken online.1Fiserv. Rates and Fees
Network assessments ride on top of interchange. Current rates on Fiserv statements are 0.1017% for Visa and Mastercard, 0.07% for Discover, and 0.12% for American Express and JCB processed under the OptBlue program.2Fiserv. Pass-Through Fees
Fiserv’s own service charge is calculated as a markup. On a sample interchange-plus statement, Fiserv shows a 0.39% discount rate applied to Visa and Mastercard volume, plus per-transaction network pieces like a $0.0185 Mastercard network access authorization fee and a $0.0155 Visa acquirer processor fee, and a monthly $7.50 service charge as a separate line. The statement’s “Total Fees” line sums monthly items such as “Flat Monthly Fee, Statement Fee, Minimum Fee, etc.”3Fiserv. How to Read Your Statement – Interchange Plus Pricing
The PCI Non-Compliance Fee
If there’s a monthly fee on your statement you can’t account for, this is the first one to check. Every business that processes card payments must comply with the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standards and validate that compliance each year, usually by completing a Self-Assessment Questionnaire. Fiserv charges a “monthly non-receipt of PCI validation fee” to merchants who haven’t completed or reported their compliance status, and that fee keeps recurring every month until you validate.4Fiserv. Merchants on the CardPointe platform can complete the questionnaire through that portal, or by calling Viking Cloud at 877-257-0239 to do it by phone.5ServiceCore. Complete PCI Compliance Requirements for Your Fiserv Account
Chargebacks and Recent Rate Increases
If a charge jumped recently, several Fiserv and network changes between 2025 and 2026 are the likely cause.
- Fiserv raised its incoming chargeback fee to $35 per occurrence in June 2025. Additional dispute stages — pre-arbitration, filed arbitration, pre-compliance, filed compliance, and collections — each carry a $15 fee, so a single chargeback that runs the full course can cost up to $110.6Merchant Cost Consulting. - A 0.30% discount rate increase hit Visa, Mastercard, and Discover transactions in March 2025.6Merchant Cost Consulting. Credit Card Processing Rate Increases – First Data Fiserv
- Mastercard processing integrity fines rise in January 2026 from 0.396% (minimum $0.0565) to 0.452% (minimum $0.113).2Fiserv. Pass-Through Fees
- The Visa non-domestic settlement fee rises in April 2026 from 0.113% to 0.2825%.2Fiserv. Pass-Through Fees
Fiserv says it communicates rate and fee updates on merchant statements and posts them online, though in practice many merchants only notice after the fact.1Fiserv. Rates and Fees
Passing Costs to Customers With a Surcharge
Fiserv runs a surcharge program that lets you add a flat 3.5% to credit card transactions. It has to apply to all credit transactions; you can’t pick and choose, and debit and prepaid cards are excluded. You must display the surcharge rate at the point of sale and store entrance, and it must appear as a separate line item on receipts. The program isn’t available in Connecticut, Massachusetts, or Puerto Rico, and enrollment rules out running a convenience fee, a service fee, or a cash discount at the same time.7Fiserv. Merchant Surcharge Program FAQ
A convenience fee is different. It’s a flat dollar amount tied to using an alternative payment channel, like paying by phone when in-person is the normal method. Convenience fees generally can’t be charged on in-person or recurring transactions, and merchants that operate only online can’t use them at all. Government and higher education entities have more flexibility under a separate service fee program that permits variable amounts and in-person or recurring charges for qualifying merchant category codes.8Fiserv. How to Lower What You Pay
The place to start is your statement. Pull the last two or three and look for recurring items you can’t explain: a PCI non-compliance fee, a monthly minimum, a gateway fee. Each one is a candidate for either resolution (validate your PCI status) or a conversation with your rep.
Beyond that, a few operational changes shift transactions into cheaper interchange tiers. Settle batches within 24 hours, since delayed settlement bumps rates up. Favor chip and tap over manually keyed entries. For large invoices, moving payments to ACH avoids card interchange entirely. Businesses processing more than $250,000 a year generally have more leverage to negotiate the Fiserv markup directly.9U.S. Chamber of Commerce. How to Reduce Credit Card Processing Fees
If you take business-to-business payments, submitting Level 2 and Level 3 data (purchase order numbers, tax amounts, line-item descriptions) qualifies those transactions for lower interchange rates.9U.S. Chamber of Commerce. How to Reduce Credit Card Processing Fees
Before You Cancel
Fiserv’s standard merchant agreement runs an initial three-year term and then auto-renews in three-month increments unless you give at least 60 days’ written notice before the initial term ends.10Fiserv. Merchant Agreement Terms During a renewal term, either side can cancel with 30 days’ notice for any reason.
Leaving during the initial three years is where it gets expensive. If Fiserv terminates early for a default event (fraud, excessive chargebacks, material breach, or failure to fund a reserve), the early termination fee is 80% of your average monthly fees over the preceding 12 months, multiplied by the months left in the initial term.10Fiserv. Merchant Agreement Terms A merchant paying $500 a month in fees and terminated 18 months in would owe roughly $7,200.
One escape hatch is worth knowing. If Fiserv raises fees or changes terms in a way that “materially diminishes” your rights or increases your obligations, you have 30 days from receiving notice of the change to terminate the agreement with 30 days’ written notice.10Fiserv. Merchant Agreement Terms If a rate-increase notice shows up and you were already thinking about switching processors, that window is the cheapest time to act.
