A DPO address, short for Diplomatic Post Office address, is a specialized U.S. mailing address that lets American government personnel stationed at embassies and consulates abroad receive mail through the United States Postal Service instead of the host country’s mail system. DPO facilities are branch post offices of the USPS, physically located inside U.S. diplomatic missions overseas but treated as domestic addresses for postage purposes. Mail sent to a DPO never enters a foreign postal network; it stays under U.S. postal jurisdiction from the moment it is dropped off until it reaches the recipient abroad.
How a DPO Address Works

From there, mail travels through secure U.S. government channels to the DPO facility at the embassy or consulate, where staff sort it into individual mail receptacles for authorized recipients.
That closed-loop design is deliberate. In many countries where the United States maintains diplomatic missions, local mail infrastructure may be slow, unreliable, or lack the security needed for official correspondence and personal mail headed to government personnel. Keeping the package inside U.S. postal control avoids all of that.
Who Can Use a DPO Address
DPO service is not open to the general public. Authorized personnel from other U.S. government agencies assigned to those missions also qualify, and each post is required to provide individual mail receptacles for its authorized DPO customers.
If someone you know is stationed at a U.S. embassy, they will share their DPO address with you. You do not need any special authorization to send mail to a DPO; only the recipient has to be an authorized user at that post.
DPO vs. APO and FPO
DPO is one of three overseas address types that USPS treats as domestic. The other two are APO, the Army Post Office and Air Force Post Office system for Army and Air Force personnel, and FPO, the Fleet Post Office system for the Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard. All three exist for the same reason: giving Americans stationed abroad a domestic mailing address so their mail does not have to travel through a foreign postal system.
The distinction is who each system serves. DPO covers civilian government personnel at diplomatic missions, while APO and FPO cover military members. How to Address a DPO Package
Format matters more here than on a normal domestic label, because mistakes can push your mail into a foreign postal system where it may never arrive. A DPO address has three lines: the recipient’s full name, the unit and box number, and then DPO followed by a two-letter code and the ZIP+4. The USPS gives this example:2United States Postal Service. What It Costs and Who Delivers
Because USPS treats DPO addresses as domestic, you pay domestic postage even though the package is going overseas.2United States Postal Service. Only USPS delivers to DPO addresses. FedEx and UPS cannot make final delivery to a diplomatic post because of the security restrictions at these facilities. Some private carrier services, such as UPS Mail Innovations and FedEx Ground Economy, appear to reach these destinations, but they do so by handing packages off to USPS for the last leg. If you are ordering online for someone at a DPO address, confirm the retailer offers USPS shipping. A package tendered to FedEx or UPS for direct delivery will not arrive.
Customs, Size Limits, and Prohibited Items
DPO mail is priced as domestic, but packages still need customs documentation. All outbound packages to APO, FPO, and DPO addresses require a customs form, PS Form 2976-R, which the clerk will help you generate at the counter. Every item inside needs a specific description. Size limits are tighter than typical domestic mail. A DPO package can be no more than 27 inches long, 14 inches wide, and 14 inches tall.2United States Postal Service. Military and Diplomatic Mail Anything larger is rejected.
Prohibitions are extensive and strictly enforced. Live ammunition, fireworks, strike-anywhere matches, explosive or flammable devices, and corrosive substances cannot be mailed at all.8United States Postal Inspection Service. Common household items like aerosol hairspray, spray paint, nail polish, and perfume face quantity limits and packaging requirements, and some can only travel by ground. Lithium batteries get particular scrutiny: you can ship small electronics with lithium batteries installed in the device, but loose batteries or batteries packed alongside equipment are not allowed, and larger lithium batteries such as those for e-bikes or electric scooters are prohibited outright.9United States Postal Service.
