A Chick-fil-A POS charge on your bank or credit card statement is a point-of-sale purchase made at Chick-fil-A, whether at the counter, in the drive-thru, or through the Chick-fil-A app. “POS” is standard banking shorthand for “point of sale” and just means a card was used at a merchant’s terminal.1Unitus Community Credit Union. What Is a POS Transaction If the charge looks off, the reason is almost always a temporary authorization hold or a delayed posting of a real purchase.
Why the Charge Looks Unfamiliar
Three things account for most of the confusion: the amount doesn’t match what you remember, the date doesn’t line up with when you ate, or you see what looks like two charges for one order.
Authorization Holds on App Orders
When you place an order through the Chick-fil-A app or website, the company puts a temporary authorization hold on your card. Chick-fil-A describes this as a “common anti-fraud practice used to verify that your account is active and has funds available to make purchases,” and notes that your account is “not actually being charged” at that stage.2Chick-fil-A. What Should I Do if I Was Charged Incorrectly for My Order During that window, the hold and the final posted charge can both sit on your account at once, which looks like a double bill.
Real Duplicate Charges
Chick-fil-A acknowledges that genuine duplicate charges do happen in specific situations. If you change your pickup location or cancel an order after submitting it through the app, the system treats the updated order as new and creates a temporary duplicate charge.4Chick-fil-A. What Should I Do if I’m Charged Twice The pending charge eventually settles and, according to the company, the customer is charged “appropriately for the order.” How long the extra hold takes to drop off is up to your bank.
Delayed Posting From Batch Settlement
Restaurants don’t usually send each card transaction to the bank the moment it happens. They collect the day’s authorized transactions and submit them as a batch to their payment processor at the end of the business day.5Investopedia. Batch Credit Card Processing The issuing bank then posts the charge to the cardholder’s statement.6Global Payments. Everything You Need to Know About Credit Card Processing for Restaurants Settlement can take one to three business days, so a Tuesday lunch may not appear until Thursday or Friday.7Stripe. Payment Settlement Explained That gap is often why a charge is hard to recognize: the date on the statement is not the date you ordered.
When the App Actually Charges Your Card
For orders placed through the Chick-fil-A app, the card is not charged when you submit the order. The charge is triggered when you check in at the restaurant by tapping “I’m here” to pick up your food.8Chick-fil-A. Will I Be Charged Immediately When I Place an Order The authorization hold placed at order submission is separate from that final charge, which is why both can show up on a statement at the same time until the hold releases.
What to Do About a Charge That Looks Wrong
Your next step depends on whether the charge is pending, already posted, or something you don’t recognize at all.
- Wait it out first. If one of two charges is still pending, give it three to five business days to fall off. Chick-fil-A advises contacting your bank directly if a hold remains for more than 30 days.2Chick-fil-A. Why Do I See a Temporary Charge on My Account in Online Banking
- For an incorrect amount that has already posted, Chick-fil-A instructs customers to contact the specific restaurant where the order was placed to request a refund. Disputing the Charge With Your Bank
If the restaurant does not resolve the problem, credit card holders have formal dispute rights under the Fair Credit Billing Act. The FTC advises sending a written letter to your card issuer at the address designated for billing inquiries, including your name, account number, a description of the error, and copies of supporting documents such as receipts. The letter must reach the issuer within 60 days of the statement containing the error. The issuer must acknowledge the complaint within 30 days and resolve it within 90 days, and federal law caps your liability for unauthorized charges at $50.12Federal Trade Commission. Using Credit Cards and Disputing Charges
One boundary worth knowing: a charge that is still pending generally can’t be formally disputed, because it’s temporary and may still change. While it’s pending, the right step is to contact the merchant.13North Shore Bank. How Long Does It Take for a Pending Debit Transaction to Clear
