What Is a 1098-C? Vehicle Donation Deduction Rules and Filing

Form 1098-C is the IRS information return a charity issues after you donate a car, boat, or airplane worth more than $500, and its entries decide how large a deduction you can actually claim.1Internal Revenue Service. About Form 1098-C, Contributions of Motor Vehicles, Boats, and Airplanes Without it attached to your return, the IRS will disallow any deduction above the $500 floor, no matter what the vehicle was worth.2Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Form 1098-C (Rev. November 2019)

When the Form Is Required

The form covers passenger cars, trucks, motorcycles, boats, and airplanes donated to organizations recognized as tax-exempt under section 501(c)(3).3Internal Revenue Service. Exemption Requirements – 501(c)(3) Organizations The charity prepares it and sends copies to you and the IRS. You don’t fill it out yourself.

If the vehicle’s claimed value is $500 or less, a plain written acknowledgment from the charity is enough. Once the claimed value crosses $500, Form 1098-C is required, and you must attach Copy B to your tax return to claim the deduction.4Internal Revenue Service. Form 1098-C (Rev. April 2025) Contributions of Motor Vehicles, Boats, and Airplanes

One detail worth confirming before you hand over the keys: the charity needs your correct Social Security number or employer identification number. If it isn’t provided, the charity checks Box 7, and that single omission disqualifies you from deducting anything above $500.2Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Form 1098-C (Rev. How the Form Sets Your Deduction

This is where most donors get tripped up. Your deduction depends on what the charity does with the vehicle after you give it up, and Form 1098-C is the document that tells you which rule applies.

If the Charity Sells the Vehicle

When the charity sells your donated vehicle to an unrelated buyer, your deduction is generally limited to the gross proceeds from that sale, not the vehicle’s fair market value. The charity checks Box 4a and reports the sale price in Box 4c.4Internal Revenue Service. Form 1098-C (Rev. April 2025) Contributions of Motor Vehicles, Boats, and Airplanes This is the most common outcome, especially with large charity-affiliated programs that auction cars in bulk. If your vehicle sells for $800 at auction, your deduction is $800, even if its Kelley Blue Book value was $3,000.

When You Can Claim Fair Market Value

Three exceptions let you deduct the full fair market value instead of just the sale price.5Internal Revenue Service. IRS Guidance Explains Rules for Vehicle Donations

  • Significant intervening use. The charity puts the vehicle into active service for its own operations, such as delivering meals or transporting clients. The charity certifies this by checking Box 5a.2Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Form 1098-C (Rev. November 2019)
  • Material improvement. The charity performs major repairs that significantly increase the vehicle’s value. Cosmetic work like a paint job or interior cleaning doesn’t qualify. The charity certifies this in Box 5a and describes the improvements in Box 5c.
  • Transfer to a needy individual. The charity gives the vehicle away or sells it well below fair market value to someone who needs transportation, directly furthering the charitable mission. This is certified in Box 5b.2Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Form 1098-C (Rev. November 2019)

If none of these applies, the sale price controls. Donors who assume they can deduct the book value of a vehicle headed straight to auction end up with a smaller deduction than they planned on.

If You Received Something in Return

If the charity gave you goods or services in exchange (a gift card, event tickets, membership benefits), your deduction drops by the value of what you received. When the total payment exceeds $75, the charity must provide a written statement estimating that value.6Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 U.S. Code 6115 – Disclosure Related to Quid Pro Quo Contributions Donate a $4,000 car and receive a $500 vacation package, and your maximum deduction is $3,500.

When You Should Receive the Form

Charities operate under strict timing rules. If the charity sells the vehicle, it must furnish Form 1098-C to you within 30 days of the sale. If the charity keeps the vehicle for its own use, makes material improvements, or transfers it to a needy individual, the deadline is 30 days from the date of the donation.2Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Form 1098-C (Rev. November 2019)

Don’t file your return before the form arrives. If the charity is dragging its feet, contact them. Penalties for late or inaccurate information returns start at $60 per return for filings up to 30 days late, rise to $340 per return after August 1, and reach $680 per return for intentional disregard.7Internal Revenue Service. Filing the Form With Your Return

Claiming a vehicle donation deduction requires itemizing on Schedule A. If your total itemized deductions (mortgage interest, state taxes, other charitable gifts, and this donation combined) don’t clear your standard deduction, the vehicle contribution won’t actually reduce your tax. For 2026, the standard deduction is $16,100 for single filers, $32,200 for married couples filing jointly, and $24,150 for heads of household.8Internal Revenue Service. IRS Releases Tax Inflation Adjustments for Tax Year 2026 Run the math before assuming the donation pays off at filing time.

You also need Form 8283 for any non-cash charitable contribution over $500. Donations between $500 and $5,000 use Section A. Donations above $5,000, where the deduction isn’t limited to gross proceeds, use Section B and require a qualified appraisal.9Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Form 8283

Paper filers attach Copy B of Form 1098-C directly to Form 1040. Electronic filers can attach the form as a PDF if their tax software supports it, or mail Copy B to the IRS using Form 8453 as a cover sheet.4Internal Revenue Service. Form 1098-C (Rev. April 2025) Contributions of Motor Vehicles, Boats, and Airplanes The IRS will disallow the deduction outright if Copy B isn’t attached.

Appraisals for Deductions Over $5,000

If you claim more than $5,000 for a donated vehicle and the deduction is based on fair market value rather than gross sale proceeds, you generally need a written qualified appraisal from a qualified appraiser.10Internal Revenue Service. Publication 561, Determining the Value of Donated Property The appraisal must be signed and dated no earlier than 60 days before the donation, and you must have it in hand before the due date of the return that first claims the deduction.9Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Form 8283

If the charity sold the vehicle and your deduction is limited to the gross proceeds shown on Form 1098-C, no appraisal is required, even when the sale price exceeds $5,000.10Internal Revenue Service. Publication 561, Determining the Value of Donated Property When the deduction equals an actual transaction price, there is nothing to appraise.

One more rule that catches people: appraisal fees cannot be calculated as a percentage of the appraised value.9Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Form 8283 If an appraiser quotes you a fee based on what the vehicle turns out to be worth, find another one.

Penalties for Overstating the Deduction

Claiming a vehicle donation deduction that doesn’t match the Form 1098-C, or that isn’t supported by proper documentation, can trigger the accuracy-related penalty under IRC section 6662. The standard penalty is 20% of the underpayment. A gross valuation misstatement raises it to 40%, and for overstated charitable contributions the penalty can reach 50% of the underpayment.11Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 6662 – Imposition of Accuracy-Related Penalty on Underpayments Vehicle donations are a well-known audit trigger; inflated valuations were common enough before Congress tightened the rules in 2004 that the category still draws scrutiny.

How Long to Keep the Paperwork

Hold onto your copy of Form 1098-C, the title transfer paperwork, any appraisal, and your Form 8283 for at least three years after filing the return that claims the deduction.12Internal Revenue Service. How Long Should I Keep Records If you carry any unused deduction forward, the clock restarts with each return that claims part of the carryover. Seven years is the safer working rule, because the IRS can look back six if it suspects income was underreported by more than 25%.
