What Happens When SPX Options Expire in the Money?

When SPX options expire in the money, the Options Clearing Corporation automatically exercises them and settles the payoff in cash. You receive (or owe) the difference between the strike price and the final settlement value, multiplied by $100 per contract, credited to your brokerage account on the next business day.1The Options Clearing Corporation. Index Options No shares change hands, no early assignment is possible, and you do not need to submit any instructions to your broker.

Cash, Not Shares

The S&P 500 is an index calculation, not something you can hold, so SPX contracts settle entirely in cash.2Cboe Global Markets. SPX Index Options – Fact Sheet The math is simple: take the difference between your strike and the settlement value, multiply by the $100 contract multiplier, and that is your payoff.1The Options Clearing Corporation. Index Options

A 5,000-strike call that settles at 5,050 pays $5,000 per contract. A 5,100-strike put that settles at 5,050 also pays $5,000. There are no share transfers to coordinate and no residual stock position to manage on Monday. The whole event shows up as a single credit line on your statement.

Automatic Exercise Handles the Paperwork

You do not have to call your broker or submit exercise instructions. The OCC uses a process called exercise by exception: any expiring option that meets a minimum in-the-money threshold is automatically exercised unless a contrary instruction is submitted.3The Options Clearing Corporation. Notice of Expiration Exercise Threshold Amount for Index Options For SPX contracts with the standard $100 multiplier, that threshold is $1.00 per contract. A single penny per index point in the money is enough to trigger exercise.

Because SPX options are European-style, they can only be exercised at expiration, so there is no risk of early assignment during the life of the trade.2Cboe Global Markets. SPX Index Options – Fact Sheet If for some reason you do not want an in-the-money position exercised (usually a multi-leg position where one leg alone would leave unwanted exposure), you can instruct your broker to submit a do-not-exercise request to the OCC before the cutoff. That situation is uncommon, since declining exercise means forfeiting the cash. For nearly everyone, the settlement money simply appears.

The Settlement Value Depends on the Contract Type

SPX options use two different methods for calculating the final settlement number, and the one that applies to your contract determines both your last chance to trade and the price used for the payoff. On the same expiration day, the two methods can produce noticeably different results.

AM Settlement for Standard Monthlies

Standard monthly SPX options, which expire on the third Friday, settle to a Special Opening Quotation with the ticker SET. The SET is built from the opening trade price of each of the 500 stocks in the index on Friday morning. It is not tied to a specific clock time; it is finalized once every constituent has opened. If a stock does not open at all, its last trade price from the prior day is substituted.4Cboe Options Exchange. Settlement of Standard AM-Settled SP 500 Index Options

For AM-settled contracts, your last chance to trade is the business day before expiration, typically Thursday. Trading ceases at 3:15 p.m. Chicago time that Thursday.2Cboe Global Markets. SPX Index Options – Fact Sheet Anything that moves the market overnight (earnings, overseas action, news) shifts the SET the next morning, and you have no way to adjust. That overnight gap is the defining risk of AM settlement.

PM Settlement for Weeklies and End-of-Month

Weekly SPX options (ticker SPXW) and end-of-month contracts use PM settlement. The closing value of the S&P 500 on expiration day is what determines the payoff.5Cboe Global Markets. S&P 500 Weeklys Options Specifications You can trade these right up until 3:00 p.m. Chicago time on the expiration day itself.2Cboe Global Markets. SPX Index Options – Fact Sheet

There is no overnight gap between your last trading opportunity and the settlement calculation, so you have far more control over the outcome. That is a major reason weekly SPX contracts now dominate trading volume.6Cboe Global Markets. Why Option Settlement Style Matters

When the Cash Actually Arrives

Once the settlement value is published, the OCC delivers cash on the next business day.1The Options Clearing Corporation. Index Options This follows the standard T+1 settlement cycle that applies across most U.S. securities transactions.7FINRA. Understanding Settlement Cycles: What Does T+1 Mean for You? For a Friday expiration, the cash typically posts Monday morning.

Your broker removes the expired contract from your holdings shortly after the settlement value is published. Margin or buying power that was tied up in the position is released during the same window. If you held short options or spreads, the corresponding collateral requirements unwind at that point too. By the next session, you have a clean slate and the full proceeds available.

If You Sold the Option

For writers of SPX options, the mechanics are the same in reverse. Instead of a credit, the OCC debits your account for the settlement amount on the same T+1 schedule.1The Options Clearing Corporation. Index Options Because settlement is in cash, you are not stuck delivering shares or holding an unwanted position; the obligation begins and ends with the cash payment.

For defined-risk trades like credit spreads, only the net result matters. If both legs finish in the money, your loss is capped at the width of the spread minus the premium collected, and the cash settlement on each leg produces a clean net figure. Some brokers charge a small exercise or assignment fee even on cash-settled contracts, so check your fee schedule rather than assuming the settlement is the only cost.

Tax Treatment Under Section 1256

SPX options are nonequity options under the tax code, which places them in the Section 1256 category. That classification carries a significant advantage: regardless of holding period, 60% of any gain is taxed at the long-term capital gains rate and 40% at your ordinary income rate.8Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 1256 – Section 1256 Contracts Marked to Market Even a position opened and closed within hours gets the split. For 2026, long-term capital gains rates top out at 20% for the highest earners, so the blended maximum on SPX gains is well below the top ordinary-income rate that would apply to short-term stock trades.

Year-End Mark-to-Market

Section 1256 requires a mark-to-market at the end of each calendar year. Any SPX option you still hold on December 31 is treated as if you sold it at fair market value on that date, and the resulting gain or loss lands in that tax year.8Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 1256 – Section 1256 Contracts Marked to Market You do not actually close the trade; the IRS just pretends you did. When the position eventually closes or expires the following year, the cost basis resets to that marked value. Your broker reports the totals on Form 1099-B with Section 1256 gains and losses broken out separately.

Three-Year Loss Carryback

If you finish the year with a net Section 1256 loss, you can elect to carry it back against Section 1256 gains from the three preceding tax years, starting with the earliest. The carryback keeps the 60/40 split, with 60% treated as long-term capital loss and 40% as short-term. Two limits apply: the carryback cannot exceed your Section 1256 gains in the prior year, and it cannot create or increase a net operating loss. This election is available to individuals but not to corporations, estates, or trusts.8Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 1256 – Section 1256 Contracts Marked to Market
