Missing your passport appointment does not cancel your application, and no penalty fee is charged. The slot is simply gone, and you need to book a new one. The real cost is time: routine processing already runs four to six weeks, and every day you spend rebooking adds to that.
What Happens to Your Slot and Your Money
When you fail to show up at a post office or other acceptance facility, your reserved time expires. You cannot walk in later the same day and be seen on the original booking. You are back in the queue.
For most no-shows, there is no financial hit. The $35 execution fee is collected in person at the appointment, and the State Department application fee check or money order goes into the envelope with your paperwork at the same visit. If you never appeared, nothing changed hands.
If you already submitted payment and paperwork before somehow missing the appointment, the money stays with the government. Neither the application fee nor the execution fee is refundable by law, even if a passport is never issued.1U.S. Department of State. Passport Fees A missed appointment is not one of the narrow grounds for a refund under federal regulation.2eCFR. 22 CFR 51.53 – Refunds
How to Rebook
Where you rebook depends on where the original appointment was.
Post Office Appointments
Most passport appointments are booked at a local post office through the USPS Retail Customer Appointment Scheduler. Return to that tool, enter your confirmation number along with the email or phone number you used, and pull up the appointment. You can change the date, time, or number of applicants directly. To switch locations, cancel the old appointment and create a new one.3USPS. Schedule an Appointment Availability varies by branch, and busy metro offices can be booked out for weeks, so check several ZIP codes if your nearest one has nothing open.
Passport Agency Appointments
Passport agencies and centers run by appointment only and serve travelers with urgent needs. If you missed one of these, call the National Passport Information Center (NPIC) at 1-877-487-2778 to discuss rebooking. Representatives are available Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Eastern Time, and on weekends from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Eastern Time.4U.S. Department of State. Contact U.S. Passports Agency slots are harder to come by than post office slots, so missing one is a bigger setback.
Cancel Ahead If You Can
If you already know you cannot make it, cancel or reschedule before the appointment passes. That frees the slot for someone else and puts you back in the scheduler on your own terms rather than after a no-show. Both the USPS tool and NPIC let you manage your appointment in advance.
How Much Time You Just Lost
The processing clock does not start until your completed application actually reaches a passport agency or center. As of early 2026, routine processing takes four to six weeks and expedited processing takes two to three weeks. Neither window includes mailing time in either direction.5U.S. Department of State. Processing Times for U.S. Passports
Missing the appointment delays submission itself. If a new slot is two weeks out, add those two weeks to the processing window. A routine timeline can slide to eight weeks or more this way. That is the real damage of a missed appointment: not fees, but lost time layered on top of already-long processing.
What to Have Ready So You Don’t Lose Another Slot
Come to the rescheduled appointment with everything in hand. For first-time applicants using Form DS-11:
- Form DS-11, filled out completely but unsigned. You sign it in front of the acceptance agent.6U.S. Department of State. Passport Forms
- Citizenship evidence, such as an original or certified birth certificate with a registrar’s seal or a previous U.S. passport, plus a photocopy on standard 8.5-by-11-inch paper.7U.S. Department of State. Apply for Your Adult Passport
- A valid photo ID, such as a driver’s license, plus a photocopy of the front and back. If your ID is from a different state than where you are applying, bring a second form of photo ID.7U.S. Department of State. Apply for Your Adult Passport
- One 2-by-2-inch color passport photo taken within the last six months, with a white or off-white background. Do not staple or tape it to the form.8U.S. Department of State. U.S. Passport Photos
- Payment. At a post office, the $35 execution fee can be paid by check, money order, debit card, or credit card. The State Department application fee is paid separately by personal check, cashier’s check, or money order made out to “U.S. Department of State.”9USPS. Passports
The most common reason people burn a second appointment is showing up without the right photocopies. Make them at home. Each one goes on one side of standard 8.5-by-11-inch paper, not shrunk to fit.
If Travel Is Now Close
If the missed appointment pushed you near a travel date, two faster paths exist.
Add Expedited Processing
You can pay for expedited processing on a standard application at any post office or acceptance facility. That cuts processing to two to three weeks and costs an extra $60 on top of the regular fees. You can also pay $22.05 for one-to-three-day return delivery of the finished passport.10Travel.State.Gov. How to Get My U.S. Passport Fast
Book Directly at a Passport Agency or Center
If your international travel is within 14 calendar days, or you need a foreign visa within 28 calendar days, you can book directly at a passport agency or center. These are the only facilities that process and issue passports on site.11U.S. Department of State. A Note for Renewers
If the missed appointment was for a renewal rather than a first-time application, you may be able to skip the in-person visit entirely. Online renewal is open to applicants who are 25 or older, whose most recent passport was valid for 10 years and is expiring within a year or expired less than five years ago, who are not changing name or personal information, who have the passport in hand undamaged, and who are not traveling internationally for at least six weeks.12U.S. Department of State. Renew Your Passport Online
Online renewal offers only routine processing, so it will not rescue a tight travel date. If you are not in a rush and you qualify, it removes the rebooking problem altogether.
