What Happens If You Miss an Afterpay Payment: Fees, Freeze, and Credit

If you miss an Afterpay payment, nothing happens for about 10 days. After that grace period, Afterpay charges a late fee of up to $8 on the missed installment, freezes your account so you can’t make new purchases, and may lower your future spending limit. Let the balance sit unpaid for roughly 90 days and Afterpay can send the debt to a collection agency, which can land on your credit report for up to seven years.

The 10-Day Grace Period and $8 Late Fee

A failed Pay-in-4 installment does not generate a fee the moment it misses. Afterpay gives you about 10 days to catch up before any penalty applies. Pay inside that window and you owe nothing extra.1Afterpay. Responsible Spending

If the installment is still unpaid after 10 days, Afterpay charges a single late fee of up to $8. Only one fee can be charged per installment, so the same missed payment won’t be hit twice. Total late fees on any one order are also capped at 25% of the original purchase price. On a $100 order, that means $25 is the ceiling across all four installments combined.1Afterpay. Responsible Spending

Pay Monthly orders work differently. Afterpay does not charge late fees on those longer-term plans.

Your Account Freezes Right Away

The account restriction is faster than the fee. As soon as a payment fails, Afterpay pauses your account. You cannot make new purchases until every overdue installment and any associated late fees are paid in full.2Afterpay. I Missed a Payment – What Happens to My Account

Catching up unfreezes the account, but your spending limit may not go back to what it was. Afterpay runs an internal risk assessment that rewards consistent on-time payments and reduces access for users who fall behind. A single missed payment can drop your limit noticeably, and rebuilding it takes time and a clean payment record going forward.2Afterpay. I Missed a Payment – What Happens to My Account

Bank Fees From Retry Attempts

After a failed charge, Afterpay may automatically retry the payment against the card or bank account on file. The terms allow re-attempts at a later time or date, using any payment method on file, until the balance clears. Afterpay does not publish the exact retry schedule or the number of attempts.

Each retry that hits an underfunded account can trigger a separate overdraft or non-sufficient-funds fee from your bank, typically between roughly $17 and $35 per failed transaction. One missed Afterpay installment can therefore cost you the $8 Afterpay fee plus one or more bank fees stacked on top. Paying the overdue amount manually through the Afterpay app, or updating your payment method, stops further retries.

What a Missed Payment Does to Your Credit

Afterpay does not report Pay-in-4 payment history, on-time or late, to Equifax, Experian, or TransUnion. A single missed installment on a standard purchase will not directly show up on your credit report or lower your score. The soft credit check Afterpay may run at signup also doesn’t affect your score.

Two caveats are worth knowing. Experian has built a separate database that tracks buy now, pay later activity, so as more providers feed data into it, your BNPL history may become visible to lenders who look there, even if traditional credit scores don’t yet weigh it.3Experian. Buy Now, Pay Later More seriously, if the debt reaches a collection agency, the collector can report it to the bureaus, and that’s where real credit damage starts.

When the Debt Goes to Collections

If an unpaid balance sits for roughly 90 days, Afterpay may hand it off to a third-party collection agency. Afterpay generally steps back at that point, and the collector takes over.

A collection account on your credit report can stay there for up to seven years from the date the account first became delinquent under federal law.4Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1681c – Requirements Relating to Information Contained in Consumer Reports That mark can make mortgages, auto loans, and credit cards harder to qualify for during that window. Once a collector is involved, you also pick up protections under the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, which bars abusive, deceptive, or unfair collection tactics.5Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1692 – Congressional Findings and Declaration of Purpose

How to Fix It or Head It Off

If the payment has already failed, open the Afterpay app or website, find the order marked overdue, and pay it. If the card or bank account on file failed because of insufficient funds or expiration, add a new payment method before completing the transaction. Paying manually also stops the automated retries that cause bank fees to pile up. Clear the balance inside the 10-day grace period and you avoid the late fee entirely.

If you see the problem coming before the due date, Afterpay lets you push a payment back by up to five days through the app or website. You get three reschedules per calendar year across all your orders, with a few limits:1Afterpay. Responsible Spending

  • Only one payment per order can be moved using the self-service tool.
  • The first and last installments on an order cannot be rescheduled through self-service; you have to contact Afterpay directly.
  • A payment cannot be moved if it is already overdue or due within the next 24 hours.
  • Pay Monthly orders have fixed due dates and cannot be rescheduled through self-service.

Rescheduling before the due date keeps your account in good standing and protects your spending limit.6Afterpay Help Center. Can I Change the Due Date of a Payment

For a bigger setback, like job loss, illness, a natural disaster, or an unexpected major expense, Afterpay has a formal financial hardship program you can request through the mobile app. Depending on your situation, Afterpay may adjust your payment schedule, waive late fees already charged or coming due, or set up a custom payment plan based on what you can afford. Your account may be placed on hold during the review so additional late fees don’t keep accumulating.7Afterpay Help Center.
