What Happens If You Lose a Money Order: Filing, Fees, Deadlines

If you lose a money order, file a claim with the issuer as soon as you realize it’s missing. Bring your purchase receipt, which carries the serial number the issuer needs to trace the funds. If no one has cashed the money order yet, the issuer cancels it and sends you a replacement. If it has already been cashed, you’ll get a photocopy showing who endorsed it, and the matter moves from a refund request to a police report.

Act the Same Day You Notice It’s Gone

A money order sits in limbo until someone presents it for payment. Once a person cashes or deposits it, the issuer treats its obligation as fulfilled and will not refund you. Every day you wait is another day someone could walk into a check-cashing store with your money order, so filing the same day you discover the loss meaningfully improves your odds.

You cannot place a stop payment on a USPS postal money order the way you would on a personal check.1USPS. Sending Money Orders You file an inquiry instead, and USPS investigates whether the money order has been cashed. Western Union and MoneyGram use the same investigation model. None of it is instant, so the window between losing the money order and someone cashing it is the period that matters.

What You Need Before You File

The purchase receipt is the single most important item. It contains the serial number the issuer uses to identify your specific money order in its system. A claim without the receipt is still possible, but harder and more expensive.

You’ll also need:

  • The exact dollar amount you purchased
  • The date and location of the purchase (specific store or post office)
  • The payee’s name as written on the money order

If you’re mailing anything, use certified mail with return receipt requested. That postal receipt is your only proof the claim was received.

If You Lost the Receipt Too

Without the receipt, the issuer has to search based on the purchase details you provide, and that gets expensive. What Happens After You File

The investigation comes down to one question: has the money order been cashed?

If it’s still outstanding and no one has presented it for payment, the issuer cancels the original serial number and sends you a replacement. You lose the processing fee, but you get the full face value back. That’s the best-case outcome, and it’s the most common one when people file quickly.

If the money order has already been cashed, the issuer denies the refund. Their obligation is complete once they’ve paid out on the instrument. You’ll receive a photocopy of the front and back of the cashed money order showing who endorsed it and where it was deposited.4USPS. How Long It Takes

USPS says confirming whether a money order was lost or stolen takes up to 30 days, and the full investigation can take up to 60 days. Any refund is issued 60 days or later from the money order’s original issue date.2USPS. PS Form 6401 – Money Order Inquiry Private issuers work on a similar timeline, with most claims resolving within six to eight weeks.

If you had a payment deadline tied to the original money order, plan on purchasing a replacement out of pocket and waiting on the refund to catch up.

If Someone Cashed It Fraudulently

When the photocopy shows someone other than your intended payee endorsed and cashed the money order, the issue becomes potential forgery or theft, and the issuer is out of the picture.

File a report with your local police and bring the photocopy as evidence. The endorsement signature and the cashing location give investigators a place to start. For USPS money orders, you can also report the theft to the U.S. Postal Inspection Service online or by calling 1-877-876-2455.9United States Postal Inspection Service. Report a Crime If the loss looks like part of a broader scam, you can file with the Federal Trade Commission at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.10Federal Trade Commission. ReportFraud.ftc.gov

Recovering the money through criminal proceedings is slow and uncertain. Small-dollar money order thefts rarely produce restitution. The police report still matters as documentation, and it may support a claim if the theft was part of a larger fraud.

Deadline to File

Don’t sit on a lost money order. The USPS receipt itself states that no claim for improper payment is permitted more than one year after payment.4USPS. Money Orders – The Basics Only the original purchaser may file the inquiry and receive payment. Private issuers set their own deadlines in the fine print on the money order itself. File within days of discovering the loss, not weeks.

A Few Things to Know About Uncashed Money Orders

If a money order sits uncashed rather than lost, different rules apply. MoneyGram money orders don’t expire, but after one year without being cashed, MoneyGram may begin charging a monthly service fee that reduces the balance.11MoneyGram. Does My Money Order Expire Western Union charges a non-refundable service fee that begins one to three years after purchase, depending on the state where you bought it.12Western Union. Money Orders – Purchase and Cash at a Western Union Near You USPS money orders do not carry dormancy fees. Eventually, uncashed money orders from any issuer become subject to state unclaimed property laws, and you’d file with the state’s unclaimed property office rather than the issuer.
