What Happens If You Freeze Your Credit? Blocks, Costs, and Access

If you freeze your credit, the three major credit bureaus stop releasing your credit report to most businesses that ask for it, which stops new accounts from being opened in your name until you lift the freeze. The freeze is free, does not affect your credit score, and stays in place indefinitely. Your existing cards, loans, and mortgages keep working exactly as before. The tradeoff is that you have to plan ahead: anything that involves a credit check, including your own applications for new credit, will be blocked until you temporarily reopen your file.

What the Freeze Actually Blocks

When a business requests your credit report from a frozen file, the bureau returns a message saying access is restricted. Without a report to review, the business can’t underwrite the application, and the process stops.1Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. What Is a Credit Freeze or Security Freeze on My Credit Report

That barrier hits you too. While the freeze is active, you can’t open a new credit card, take out an auto loan, apply for a mortgage, or finance a phone. The same wall goes up in several situations that people don’t always think of as credit checks:

  • A landlord running a credit check on your rental application.
  • An employer doing a background screening that pulls credit.
  • An insurance company generating a credit-based insurance score for an auto or homeowner’s quote.2Federal Trade Commission. Credit Freezes and Fraud Alerts

The insurance case has a wrinkle worth knowing about. When an insurer can’t pull your file, it may assign you a neutral rating that ignores credit entirely, or it may drop you into a higher-risk category. Either result can mean paying more than your actual credit history would justify. If you’re shopping for coverage, ask the insurer which bureau it uses and lift the freeze at that bureau before the quote is finalized.

Who Can Still See Your Report

A freeze is not a complete blackout. Several groups keep access regardless of the freeze:

  • Companies you already have accounts with. Your existing card issuers and lenders can still review your report for account management, including decisions about raising or lowering your credit limit.1Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. • Debt collectors working on behalf of an existing creditor.
  • Government agencies, including courts, law enforcement acting under a warrant, and child support enforcement.1Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. What Is a Credit Freeze or Security Freeze on My Credit Report
  • Companies sending prescreened credit and insurance offers. The bureaus can still use your data to generate those preapproved mailers. Stopping them requires a separate opt-out.

What the Freeze Does Not Change

Your credit score does not move because you froze your file. Scoring models run on the underlying data whether or not the file is available to outside requesters, so freezing doesn’t cost you points or bump you into a different tier.2Federal Trade Commission. Credit Freezes and Fraud Alerts

Your existing accounts also continue as normal. Payments come due on the same schedule, interest accrues the way it did before, and your creditors keep reporting your payment history to the bureaus. The freeze only stops new files from being opened in your name. It does nothing to prevent unauthorized charges on the cards and accounts you already have, so keep checking your statements for transactions you don’t recognize.1Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. What a Freeze at the Big Three Does Not Cover

Freezing your file at Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion blocks most new credit accounts, but it does not touch every consumer report a business might pull. Banks and credit unions often check ChexSystems before opening a checking or savings account, and a freeze at the three major bureaus has no effect on your ChexSystems file. To restrict that one, you have to contact ChexSystems separately.3ChexSystems. Security Freeze Information

Specialty agencies also handle reports for insurance claims, rental history, employment screening, and utility accounts. If you’re responding to a data breach or identity theft and want fuller coverage, you can ask the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau for a list of consumer reporting agencies and place freezes at any of them that hold a file on you.

Applying for Credit After the Freeze Is On

When you need to apply for something that requires a credit check, you have two options. You can schedule a temporary lift for a specific window of time, after which the freeze automatically snaps back on, or you can remove the freeze permanently. Both are free.

You request the lift through the same bureau you used to place the freeze, whether online, by phone, or by mail. Federal law requires the bureau to process an online or phone lift within one hour. A mail request must be processed within three business days.4Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1681c-1 – Identity Theft Prevention, Fraud Alerts, and Active Duty Alerts

If you know which bureau a particular lender pulls from, lift only at that one. Ask before you apply. There’s no reason to reopen your file more broadly than the application requires.

Keep Track of Your Login

Each bureau ties your ability to lift the freeze to an account or set of credentials. Experian no longer uses a PIN and instead has you manage the freeze through a free online account secured by username and password.5Experian. Freeze or Unfreeze Your Credit File for Free Equifax lets you manage the freeze through a myEquifax account, with identity verification by text message or security questions when you call.6Equifax. Security Freeze TransUnion offers online management as well. Store your credentials somewhere safe; losing access means going through identity verification all over again.

Cost and Timing

Placing, lifting, and removing a freeze are free under federal law at all three bureaus. Bureaus must place a freeze within one business day when you request it online or by phone, and within three business days when you request it by mail.4Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1681c-1 – Identity Theft Prevention, Fraud Alerts, and Active Duty Alerts The freeze then stays in place until you decide to lift or remove it. There is no expiration date, no renewal, and no fee for changing your mind later.
