USAA renters insurance covers your personal belongings against a specific list of perils, your legal liability if you injure someone or damage their property, medical bills for guests hurt in your rental, temporary living expenses when a covered loss makes your home unlivable, and up to $5,000 in identity fraud expenses. It is unusual among renters policies in two ways: flood and earthquake damage are included in the standard contract at no extra charge, and claim payouts are based on replacement cost rather than depreciated value. The policy is only available to USAA members, meaning people with a qualifying military connection and their immediate families.1U.S. News & World Report. USAA Renters Insurance Review
Personal Property: What Perils Are Covered
USAA renters insurance is a named-peril policy. That means your belongings are covered only when they are damaged, destroyed, or stolen by one of the events the contract specifically lists.2USAA. Renters Protection Policy Contract Some insurers write “open peril” contracts that cover everything except what is excluded; USAA does the opposite.
The covered perils are:
- Fire or lightning
- Wind or hail
- Explosion
- Theft, including burglary, robbery, and attempted theft
- Vandalism or malicious mischief
- Riot or civil commotion
- Sudden and accidental smoke
- Flood and water, covering overflow of inland or tidal waters, surface water runoff, sewer or drain backup, and mudslides
- Earthquake, including tremors and land shock waves before, during, or after a volcanic eruption
- Volcanic eruption
- Falling objects, if the roof or exterior wall is damaged first
- Collapse of a building
- Discharge or overflow of water or steam from plumbing, heating, air conditioning, sprinkler systems, or household appliances
- Vehicle or aircraft impact
- Sudden electrical current damage, such as power surges
Flood and earthquake coverage inside a standard renters policy is the piece worth pausing on. Most insurers sell those as separate products or endorsements. USAA builds them in, working with the National Flood Insurance Program on the flood side.3NerdWallet. USAA Renters Insurance Review
Payouts Are Based on Replacement Cost
When a covered loss happens, USAA pays what it costs to replace the item today, without subtracting for age or wear. A five-year-old laptop that gets stolen is reimbursed at the price of a comparable new one, not its used value. This replacement cost basis is standard on the policy rather than a paid upgrade.4USAA. Category Sub-Limits
Your personal property limit (often $30,000 as a starting point) applies to most belongings, but the contract caps payouts on certain high-value or high-risk categories no matter how much overall coverage you buy:5USAA. Renters Protection Policy Contract
- Jewelry, watches, furs, and precious stones: $1,000, theft only
- Firearms: $2,000, theft only
- Silverware and goldware: $2,500, theft only
- Cash, bank notes, digital currency, bullion, and coins: $200
- Securities, passports, manuscripts, and tickets: $1,000
- Bicycles: $1,500 per loss
- Business property: $2,500 at your residence, $250 away from it
- Watercraft, including trailers and motors: $1,000
A $5,000 engagement ring stolen from your apartment will not be fully reimbursed by the base policy. For items that exceed these caps, USAA sells a separate Valuable Personal Property policy.
Liability Coverage
If you accidentally injure someone or damage their property, liability coverage pays the resulting medical bills, repair costs, and your legal defense. It applies worldwide and covers bodily injury and property damage from personal activities or your use of the rental.6USAA. Renters Protection Policy Contract
A standard policy includes $100,000 in liability. Raising it to $300,000 typically adds only $10 to $30 per year.7Insurance.com. USAA Renters Insurance Attorney fees and court expenses are paid on top of the liability limit, not out of it.
Liability does not apply to injuries you cause intentionally, business-related claims, or injuries to people who live in your household. It also excludes liability tied to aircraft, hovercraft, or environmental hazards like mold.6USAA. Renters Protection Policy Contract
Medical Payments for Guests
Medical payments coverage handles minor injuries to guests without any need for a lawsuit or a finding of fault. If a visitor trips on your rug and needs an X-ray, this part of the policy pays. It also applies to certain accidents away from your property.8USAA. Renters Insurance Coverage A common default limit is $1,000, though the amount on your declarations page controls.9Insurify. Loss of Use After a Covered Event
If a covered event like a fire or flood makes the rental uninhabitable, loss-of-use coverage pays for the reasonable increase in your living costs while repairs happen or you find a new home. That can include temporary housing, food beyond your normal grocery spending, transportation, storage, and pet boarding.8USAA. Renters Insurance Coverage
The policy caps this coverage at the greater of 40% of your personal property limit or $2,500, for up to 12 months from the date of loss. If a civil authority orders you out because a neighboring property was damaged by a covered peril, the policy pays additional living expenses for up to two weeks.2USAA. Identity Fraud Coverage
Identity and financial fraud coverage comes built into the renters policy with an aggregate limit of $5,000 and a $100 deductible. It pays recovery expenses including attorney fees (with prior insurer consent), lost wages up to $250 per day, notarization of fraud affidavits, certified mail to credit agencies or law enforcement, loan re-application fees, and research fees charged by merchants or credit bureaus.2USAA. Renters Protection Policy Contract It does not apply if the fraud was committed by someone in your household or anyone you entrusted with account access.5USAA. Renters Protection Policy Contract
Military-Specific Coverage
Several provisions in the policy exist because USAA writes for military households:
- No deductible on covered losses to personally owned military uniforms and equipment, for active-duty and active Reserve members.10USAA. Military Renters Insurance
- War damage to personal property is covered, a peril that civilian renters policies routinely exclude.10USAA. Military Renters Insurance
- Worldwide protection for belongings in deployment, storage, or transit.
- Up to 28% off premiums for members living on a military base.9Insurify. USAA Renters Insurance
For service members on orders away from their permanent duty station, USAA also sells a separate “Personal Property Plus” deployment product. It provides up to $2,500 in blanket coverage at $3 per month with no deductible, and covers losses from transit, weather, sand, and liquid damage to gear.11USAA. What Is Not Covered
Because the policy is named-peril, anything not on the covered list is excluded from the start. The contract also calls out specific property and situations that are never covered:5USAA. Renters Protection Policy Contract
- Intentional damage or fraud by any insured person on the policy
- Gradual damage, including slow water seepage, mold or dry rot (with narrow exceptions), insect or rodent damage, and normal wear and tear
- Animals, birds, and fish
- Motor vehicles and their permanently installed equipment
- Aircraft and hovercraft
- Property that is lost or misplaced, as distinct from stolen
- Property belonging to roommates or tenants who are not on the policy
- Items in the mail or with a package delivery service
- Business data and digital media
- Accidental drops or spills on electronics, unless a separate endorsement is added
Fine-arts breakage is capped at $1,000, and humidity or temperature-related damage to outdoor items like plants and decorative landscaping is excluded.12Oklahoma Insurance Department. USAA Renters Protection Policy
Optional Endorsements That Expand Coverage
Several add-ons close common gaps in the base policy.
Electronics Endorsement
The base policy will not pay for a laptop you drop or a phone you spill coffee on. The electronics endorsement covers accidental damage and loss on computers, laptops, tablets, smartphones, gaming consoles, TVs, drones under 10 pounds, fitness trackers, smart jewelry, VR equipment, and home theater systems. Coverage runs from $1,000 to $10,000 with a $250 deductible, and USAA advertises the cost as low as 14 cents a day.13USAA. Electronics Coverage
Valuable Personal Property Policy
For items above the renters sub-limits, USAA sells a standalone Valuable Personal Property policy starting at $2 per month. It covers jewelry, cameras, musical instruments, fine art, firearms, furs, silverware, and stamp and coin collections, with no deductible and protection for accidental drops, breaks, and spills. Items can be scheduled individually or covered under a blanket class limit with a per-item cap of $2,500. Filing a VPP claim does not affect the premium on your renters policy.14USAA. Valuable Personal Property Insurance
Personal Cyber Insurance
Offered through Chubb under the “Blink” brand, this separate policy covers digital threats including identity theft, fraudulent wire transfers, ransomware extortion, and cyberbullying. Limits run from $10,000 to $50,000 with no deductible, and it sits on top of the $5,000 identity fraud protection already in the renters policy.15Chubb. USAA Insurance Agency to Offer Members Personal Cyber Protection From Blink by Chubb
Cohabitant Endorsement
USAA generally recommends unrelated roommates buy their own policies. If you share a home with a partner in a committed, long-term personal relationship and they don’t have their own renters coverage, a cohabitant endorsement can add them to yours. A casual roommate who doesn’t fit that definition needs a separate policy.4USAA. Renters Insurance Support
What It Costs
Premiums start as low as $10 per month for $2,500 in personal property coverage and $100,000 in liability. At a more common level, $30,000 in personal property and $100,000 in liability, the average annual premium is about $146, roughly $12 per month. That sits slightly below the national renters average of $151 per year in NerdWallet’s 2026 analysis, which used a 30-year-old renter and a $500 deductible as its sample.3NerdWallet. Discounts that can bring the price down include:
- Bundling with a USAA auto policy, up to 10% off9Insurify. USAA Renters Insurance
- Living on a military base, up to 28% off
- Attending a service academy or military college, 20% to 45% off
- Three years without a claim, up to 20% off at renewal
- Security systems, automatic sprinklers, or monitored fire alarms, up to 5% off
Renters deductibles typically range from $500 to $2,000. A higher deductible lowers the monthly premium and raises what you pay out of pocket on a claim.16USAA. How Insurance Deductibles Work
USAA membership is required to buy the policy, and membership is limited to active-duty service members, National Guard and Reserve members, honorably discharged veterans, precommissioned officers, service academy cadets and midshipmen, certain federal agency employees, and the spouses and children of USAA members. Coverage is available in all 50 states and Washington, D.C.1U.S. News & World Report. USAA Renters Insurance Review
