What Does the Cursor AI-Powered IDE Charge? Plans, Usage, Refunds

The Cursor AI IDE costs nothing on the free Hobby tier, $20 per month for the Individual plan, $40 per user per month for Teams, and custom pricing for Enterprise. Since mid-2025, every paid plan also includes a monthly pool of model usage measured in tokens, and anything past that pool is billed on demand at per-model rates.1Cursor. Cursor Pricing

What Each Plan Includes

Four tiers, each building on the one below.

  • Hobby (free). No credit card. Limited AI agent requests and limited tab completions. Enough to try the editor and decide whether the AI features suit how you work.
  • Individual ($20/month). Everything in Hobby, plus extended agent limits, access to frontier models from OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google, cloud agents, and Bugbot on usage-based billing.
  • Teams ($40/user/month). Everything in Individual, plus centralized billing, a team marketplace for shared rules and plugins, agentic code reviews with Bugbot, cloud agents with shared team context, usage analytics, team-wide privacy mode, and SAML/OIDC single sign-on.
  • Enterprise (custom). Everything in Teams, plus pooled usage across the organization, invoice and purchase-order billing, SCIM seat management, repository and model access controls, audit logs, an AI code-tracking API, and priority support.

Individual and Teams bill monthly by default. Annual billing is available and lowers the effective monthly cost. Enterprise customers negotiate directly and can pay by invoice or wire transfer instead of card.1Cursor. Cursor Pricing

How the Usage Charges Work

Cursor retired the older system of counting “fast” and “slow” requests in mid-2025. The current model tracks tokens, meaning the volume of text moving in and out of the AI during your coding sessions. Every paid plan bundles a monthly pool. Stay inside it and there is nothing extra to pay. Exceed it and you have two choices: enable on-demand usage (pay-as-you-go, billed in arrears) or move up a tier for a larger included pool. Request quality and speed do not change either way.2Cursor. Models and Pricing

On-demand rates are set per model, priced per million tokens, split between input and output. A sample of what things cost:

  • Claude 4.6 Sonnet: $3 input, $15 output
  • Claude Opus 4.8: $5 input, $25 output
  • Gemini 3.1 Pro: $2 input, $12 output
  • Gemini 3.5 Flash: $1.50 input, $9 output
  • GPT-5.3 Codex: $1.75 input, $14 output
  • GPT-5.5: $5 input, $30 output
  • Composer 2.5: $0.50 input, $2.50 output
  • Grok Build 0.1: $1 input, $2 output

Cache reads, meaning tokens the model is reusing from context it has already processed, cost far less. For Claude 4.6 Sonnet a cached read runs $0.30 per million tokens versus $3 for fresh input. Teams plans layer a Cursor Token Rate of $0.25 per million tokens on top of model pricing for non-Auto agent requests.2Cursor. Models and Pricing

The practical read: lighter models like Composer 2.5 or Grok Build 0.1 stretch your included usage a long way for routine work, while the premium models are what burn through it. A big refactoring session that pipes thousands of lines through Claude Opus or GPT-5.5 can eat a month’s allocation in an afternoon. Checking the usage dashboard before large jobs is worth doing.

Ways to Lower What You Pay

Use Your Own API Key

You can plug personal API keys for OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Azure, or AWS Bedrock directly into Cursor. Requests routed through your own key do not draw from Cursor’s included usage; you are billed by the provider at whatever rate your account with them carries.3Cursor Docs. Use Your Own API Key

Setup lives in Cursor Settings under Models: paste the key beside the provider, verify, save. One catch worth knowing before you commit: personal keys only cover chat models. Tab autocomplete keeps running on Cursor’s own models regardless.

There is a data-handling trade-off too. Requests through Cursor’s infrastructure fall under Cursor’s privacy and retention policies. Requests routed through your key fall under the provider’s. Cursor transmits your key over an encrypted connection with each request and does not store it after the request completes.3Cursor Docs. Use Your Own API Key

Free Year for Students

University students can claim a full year of the Individual plan at no cost. Go to cursor.com/students, sign in with an account whose email matches your .edu address, and complete the verification. The Cursor account email and the university email have to be identical; mismatched emails are the usual reason a verification fails.4Cursor. Cursor Students

When the free year ends, the subscription rolls into regular billing at $20 per month unless you cancel first. If you are already paying when you verify, Cursor refunds the remainder of your current cycle and switches you to the student plan automatically.

Changing Your Plan or Canceling

Billing lives in the Cursor web dashboard. From cursor.com/dashboard, click “Billing and Invoices” in the left sidebar to reach the Stripe billing portal, where you can update your card, change the company name or address on invoices, and download PDFs of past charges.5Cursor. Billing and Payments

To cancel, open the same billing section, click “Manage Subscription,” then “Cancel Subscription,” and confirm. Paid features stay active through the end of the current billing period and no further charges post. After the period ends the account reverts to the free Hobby tier. Canceling does not delete your account or any local project files.6Cursor. Cancel Your Subscription

Enterprise customers on invoice billing should handle cancellations and seat changes through their account manager, since those agreements sit outside the self-service portal.1Cursor. Cursor Pricing

Refunds and Charges You Do Not Recognize

Refund requests are reviewed case by case. Email support from the address on your account and include the amount, date, invoice ID if you have it, and what happened. For Teams subscriptions, adjustments such as seat-count changes often show up as credits against future invoices rather than direct refunds.7Cursor. Refunds

If a charge on your card looks wrong, contact Cursor first with the amount, the date, and the last four digits of the card. Filing a chargeback with your bank before reaching out can result in your account being suspended.7Cursor. Refunds

What the Listed Price Does Not Include

The subscription prices above do not include sales tax, VAT, GST, or similar transaction taxes. Cursor’s terms put those on the customer. Where Cursor is required to collect them, they are invoiced separately under the standard payment terms.8Cursor. Pricing

In the United States, whether state sales tax applies to a SaaS subscription depends on the state. Some tax software subscriptions at rates that can exceed 7%; others exempt them. If you are buying for a business, keep the invoices. The subscription cost is generally deductible as a business expense, and the Stripe billing portal will produce a PDF receipt for every charge.
