What Does Tax Code 01 Mean on Your Paystub?

“Tax Code 01” on your paystub is not an official IRS designation. It’s an internal label your employer’s payroll software uses to tag a specific withholding line, and in most systems that slot holds your federal income tax withholding. Some state and local payroll systems use the same “01” number to mark state income tax instead, so the meaning depends on whose software produced the stub. The only way to be certain is to ask your payroll or HR department.

Why the Code Varies by Employer

Payroll software needs a short identifier for each deduction it pulls from your paycheck. Some systems use letter abbreviations like “FED” or “FIT” for federal income tax. Others assign numeric codes, and “01” is commonly the first slot, typically reserved for federal income tax withholding.

The IRS does not dictate what labels employers use internally. Even the codes that appear in Box 14 of your W-2 are left entirely to the employer’s discretion, and the IRS instructs employers to simply label each item however they see fit.1Internal Revenue Service. 2026 General Instructions for Forms W-2 and W-3 That flexibility is why the same number can mean different things at different companies.

Some state payroll matrices also use “01” as a category code, sitting alongside abbreviations like “SIT” for state income tax. If your paystub shows “Tax Code 01” with a dollar amount and nothing else nearby indicates federal or state, the most likely explanation is federal income tax deducted from that check. If you work in a state with its own income tax and your paystub lists several numeric codes, “01” may instead point to state withholding.

How to Confirm What Your “01” Line Is

Start with the stub itself. Look for the other tax lines: if you can see Social Security and Medicare called out separately, and there’s a second numeric code that clearly maps to state tax based on the amount, the “01” line is almost certainly federal. If you don’t live in a state with income tax and there’s only one numeric tax code, federal is the safe read.

When the stub is ambiguous, contact payroll or HR. They can pull the code table for your company’s system and tell you exactly what “01” represents. That table is the authoritative source, because the employer is the one who chose the labels.

If It’s Federal Income Tax: What Sets the Amount

Federal law requires every employer to deduct and withhold income tax from your wages each pay period.2Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 3402 – Income Tax Collected at Source The amount comes from what you reported on your Form W-4: your filing status, whether you have other jobs or a working spouse, any credits for dependents, other income you asked to be covered, and any extra dollar amount you requested. Payroll software runs those inputs through IRS-published tax tables to calculate each check.

The tables apply graduated rates. For 2026, those rates run from 10% on the lowest slice of taxable income up to 37% on income above certain thresholds.3Internal Revenue Service. IRS Releases Tax Inflation Adjustments for Tax Year 2026 Each paycheck’s withholding is an estimate of what you’ll owe for the full year, sliced across your pay periods.

Bonuses, commissions, and other supplemental pay are often withheld at a flat 22% rate rather than running through the graduated calculation. If supplemental wages paid to you in a calendar year exceed $1 million, the rate on the excess rises to 37%. That’s why a bonus check can show a very different “01” amount than a regular paycheck of the same size.

The W-4 Controls the Line

Form W-4 is the only document that tells your employer how much federal income tax to withhold.4Internal Revenue Service. About Form W-4, Employee’s Withholding Certificate If you remember “claiming allowances” from an older version, that system is gone. The IRS redesigned the form in 2020 and eliminated allowances entirely.5Internal Revenue Service. FAQs on the 2020 Form W-4

The current W-4 asks for your filing status (single, married filing jointly, or head of household), then walks through optional steps to account for a second job, claim credits for dependents, report other income like freelance or investment earnings, and request a specific dollar amount of extra withholding per paycheck.6Internal Revenue Service. Form W-4 2026 – Employee’s Withholding Certificate Only name, address, Social Security number, and filing status are required; the rest is optional, but skipping relevant steps can leave your “01” line too low and set you up for a balance due at filing.

The IRS offers a free Tax Withholding Estimator that walks you through your income, deductions, and credits, then generates a recommended W-4 you can hand to your employer.7Internal Revenue Service. If It’s State Income Tax

If your payroll department confirms that “01” is a state withholding code in your system, the federal rules above don’t set the amount. State income tax withholding is governed by your state’s own rate structure and its own withholding form, which is separate from the federal W-4. The federal Form W-4 doesn’t change the number on a state line.

How to Change What Gets Withheld

You can submit a new W-4 to your employer at any time. There is no limit on how often you can update it. Most companies accept it through an internal HR portal; some still require paper.

Once your employer receives a replacement W-4, federal rules require them to begin applying the new withholding no later than the start of the first payroll period ending on or after the 30th day from the date they received it.8Internal Revenue Service. Publication 15 (2026), (Circular E), Employer’s Tax Guide In practice, many employers process the change faster, but 30 days is the outer limit. After it takes effect, check your next paystub to confirm the “01” line moved in the direction you expected.

If your employer rejects your W-4 as invalid, perhaps because a required field was blank or the form was altered in an unauthorized way, they must notify you and ask for a corrected version.9Internal Revenue Service.
